Is there any interest in a spec speed motor running on 4 cell spec batteries? Or do you spec guys really like fooling with the motors? Thanks Ralf0

I think the cost would be a factor running brushless for spec.

we been running the 4300 and 4 cell spec packs in nastruck for at least 2 years now in pittsburgh, its the biggest class almost every week !!

I think the cost would be a factor running brushless for spec. Brushless would end up being much cheaper as there are no brushes, springs, lathe, etc... to buy. Just buy one motor and run it all season, maybe more. Plus the motor equation would be equal. One of the reasons I quit after trying to run spec in NC was the motors and batteries, had to buy three or four motors and work on em constantly to get one or two decent ones, no problem with brushless. Also batteries are less of a problem with brushless motors. Not to mention you can devote much more time to working on set up instead of motors. IMO Ralf

I think the new motor that Novak will be coming out with for the Lipo class may be just the ticket on 4 cell 1600 packs. May be the same speed as the current spec class maybe a little slower which may be a good thing!

That is what I was thinking, just wondered if there would be any interest from the spec racers, I would come back to spec if that was the case. Ralf

...just got an email from Charlie @ Novak...NEW Test motors are on the way.

I'm going to have to go to the calculator before I try running these...big change~

Down at Easley.. They ran Spec Motors with 13.5 last few weeks.. Seems like a even matched feild.. Both are turning 6.1s avg...

I think they let the 13.5 4-cells race against the spec motors with six cells. Ralf

Nope.. They ran 13.5 with Spec open 4 cells last 2 weeks in prep for the regionals... Yea spec batteries may differ.. But the 4200 max rule with 13.5 and spec motors your choice was well matched..

well then it should be pretty close if they would both use 4 cell spec packs right? a couple of use are thinking of going that route for next year. i would love to hear more info about it.

Hey RALF, thought you'd like to know...I did get to run the 17.5 on 4 cell today (Sunday) on a FOAM Asphalt track.

I didn't practice it, and had planned to get 2 runs on it...but I screwed up (Cause they ran the STOCK "A" before the 4300 "B" and I was wired for the 4300 couldn't get it swapped quick enough...so I only ran one qualifier.

TQ in 3 rounds was 62 lapper, in my one round...with just a guestimate ratio based on some number crunching I was able to go 61. I had planned to drop 2 teeth in the main to see how it would run...but I have some ideas for NEXT TIME.

My run -- 61/5:05.29 (in round three)
TQ Run -- 62/5:02.50 (in round two)

Since this was the first run on the car, I started in the rear of the field..and let the others go..and get almost to turn one before I pulled hard on the trigger, netting a first lap time for me of a 5.9, versus the holeshot of Freakin' Joe Hawkins who pulled a 4.9

I'll side by side my run vs. the guy who TQ'd, who backed up his TQ run with another 62 laps run in this round with a spin...running a 62 5:04.03

ME HIM
---- ----
5.9 5.2
4.7 4.7
4.7 4.7
5.8 4.7
4.8 4.5
4.8 4.5
4.8 4.7

for most of the rest of the run (Sorry, don't feel like typing ALL of them) the other guy run several more 4.7's and 4.8's and one 4.6, my car kinda went flat running mostly 4.9's nearly the entire rest of the run...and actually dumping off the last 4 laps all the way to a 5.6 last lap. (The other guy finished w/ a 4.9)

My battery was SMC 4200 (bought on RCTech in a $24.00 lesser cell sale) and this run was it's 6th run in a 2 hour period...I ran this particular pack in 3 practice runs, 2 4300 qualifiers and this heat...w/o discharging....coming straight off the track, sticking in front of my BLUE Blower for 10 minutes...and Recharge at 7 amps. (CAN YOU SAY BATTERY ABUSE?) I had a fresh pack lined up for the main run that didn't happen, plus I had planned to gear down 2 full teeth (To a 100/56) w/ 2.17 PINK rear tires.

I was plesantly suprised to see this run so close on the first run - I won't be able to re-test it for a while..I sent it to PHOENIX to have Ray McCoy do a little testing with it...(Maybe he can get someone to try it w/ 4 cell....but up there they are already pretty much running LIPOS

I think that would be great to have a spec motor class with a brushless motor that wouldn't scare away someone new who isn't yet used to the speed. They wouldn't have to spend a ton of money buying the motors, springs, lathe etc.. Let them learn to work on the chassis and drive a good line. When they start winning mains they could move up with some confidence. IMO

Ralf,

The only thing scary about the 17.5 motor on 4 cell that I saw was the FLYWHEEL on that thing for a gear...guys who may have race gears...probably won't have the selection of PRS Gears needed to get tall enough...and that is GOING TO BE A "Must Have" as will a car able to handle the huge gears (An L4 may be a problem...I'm going to see how big a gear set I can get on an L4 using a 88 spur) It may be needed to have the PRS Small Spur gear set too...

Ralf

Just need SMALLER spurs. See lots of lookers but not any coments, guess the spec racers like to work on the motors.....

Just a insight, but since making a BL motor try and match a brushed motor on POWER and RPM is going to be hard. Then trying to make the R/C cars work with the new gearing requirements is going to be hard.

"Here you go a nice new cheap Spec BL motor, BTW you will need $100 in new spurs, pinions and new motor pod just to get it scoot"

Then a thought came to me, What about half length motors or some other diminsion that would effectively reduce the possible POWER output but still be wound to match the RPM of a stocker.

I think I feel the onset of a 100W Spec class starting.
