05/12/07 Race Report

Another fun day of oval racing at Thunder Road. Despite a beautiful spring day, a group of dedicated oval racers gathered indoors to test the carpet and competition; and some close and furious racing followed.

Spec Class benefited from the absence of one Steve Walker, Beach, who was living up to his name somewhere down in the Carolinas. That left the rest of us, who were getting a bit tired of being left by Beach, with a chance of getting a look at the front spot. Robbie (Tripod) Bingler was back in action after a long health related absence from the racing scene, and looking strong, as he led most of the heat action. I was able to press him in the first heat, and Oliver Campbell chased hard in the second; but Robbie had things pretty much his own way for most of the day.

Joel White dominated the heats in Stock, with Clayton Anderson and Harold Ruckle offering occasional challenges. Big Clay and Harold had some good dustups, but neither looked capable of mounting a serious challenge.

Spec led off the Mains, with Joel sidelined due to ESC problems and me calling the race due to a radio problem. With his strongest challengers sidelined, that left Robbie to disappear into the distance, as Oliver Campbell fought a sudden handling problem. Harold Lam finally fought his way past Oliver around half distance, and set off to chase down Robbie. Robbie was still running strongly, but Harold now had the bit firmly in his teeth; knocking off a few tenths each lap. As the final minute started clicking down, Harold had Robbie in his sights; and he had plenty of time left to make his move. Robbie however, had other plans. Robbie started clicking off fast laps, stringing together a series of quick laps that blunted Harold’s challenge. With only a few seconds left, Harold, determined not to be denied in his bid for his maiden win, ripped off some blistering times to close to Robbie’s bumper. Time ran out, with Harold still a second behind at the buzzer; as Robbie celebrated his return with a TQ and win.

TQ’er Joel White had the Stock Class covered, just as he had all night long. Clayton and Harold trailed in order and everything looked set for a boring procession to the checker. With a minute to go, Joel seemed to falter; and suddenly Big Clay was all over him. Clayton slipped past with a few seconds remaining to take the win; and Harold missed grabbing second by less that a second.

Our summer Oval points series is going to be interesting. Thanks; Ernie P.

Hey Guy's logo time no talk. I just wanted to post on here first to see if any of the Thunder road guy"s needed any equipment. I'm selling out. I started my own Motorcross company (www.2upminis.com) and I don't have the time to race anymore. Also Jazzy (Jeff Curtis) is super busy making sure Jeff Burtin goes fast to be able to race with me. So I'm going to post all sorts of goodies on the for sale page, check it out.

Peace,

Each racer may elect to skip two races; with those races being “dropped” from the results. Should a racer miss three or more races, his series standing will be determined by the points total from the races actually run.

Scoring for both Oval and Road Course will be as follows:

Winner in each Class will receive one point for each paid entry. Ten entries will award ten points to the winner; nine entries nine points to the winner, etc. TQ in each Class will receive one additional bonus point. Should there not be sufficient entries to run a Class, that race date will be considered a “drop” for that Class only.
More than two “dropped” races for lack of attendance will drop that Class from the series.

Winner in each Class will receive an engraved trophy.

A Track Champion Trophy will be awarded to the racer scoring the highest combined total points scored from all Oval and Road Course Classes.

For both Oval and Road Course Classes: In the event of a tie score for each Class Champion, the tie will be broken by a heads up, ten lap race between the tied racers only. This special shootout race will be held 30 minutes after final standings are announced, following the conclusion of the final Series Race (August 5 for Road Course, September 1 for Oval).

OK so I have not left yet but looking at the schedule for the series it looks like we might make one or two races down there. The other dates we will be running at Willow Mill in PA out on the asphalt. Running there and sat and then trying to get to the mill is a feat even I don't want to touch. You know family things and the gas situation we have now. If the weather works against us ( for asphalt) maybe we'll get the team down for more races on the fuzz :)

Well, no matter how many, or how few, races you make; you will be welcomed. Be prepared for a mixed welcome, though. The local boys will welcome you with open arms; treat you like a brother; but will also give you a rough time on the carpet. The local boys are a fast lot; so bring your best stuff. 05/26/07 Race Report

A nice crowd of regulars showed up at Thunder Road for our bi-weekly Oval Race. We ran Spec and Stock classes; and both delivered tight and fast races. One of the things you have to understand about racing at Thunder Road; we just don’t have very many slow racers. Even a normal race like this one featured several National caliber racers capable of running with any one, any where.

The Spec race was a foregone conclusion, of course. Beach (Steve Walker) has been on a tear ever since he bought that Silva chassis from me (Hmmm…. Maybe I should have kept that one for myself?); and he was undefeated from the day he put it on the track for the first time. Running at a pace that would place well in the Stock Class, he was all set for another win. Stock heats featured a dogfight between Jesse Bean, back home after a long absence, and Joel White; with Charlie Johnson and Clayton Anderson scrapping among themselves for third. Oliver Campbell looked racy at times, and could run fast laps; but handling seemed a bit elusive.

The Spec Main was a tingler. Joel White and Jesse Bean had specifically set out to prove the Beach Boy wasn’t invincible; and the heats had shown both could give Steve a very rough time of it. The heats had Robbie Bingler, Oliver Campbell and I with our own battle going, but we were fighting for fourth place. Oliver and I both found problems we couldn’t get repaired in time, and scratched the Main; leaving Robbie in a lonely fourth. Jesse had problems of his own, and had to be satisfied with third; while Beach and Joel locked up in a back and forth fight that went all the way to the wire. Joel led, Beach led, Joel led, Beach led; but it was Joel ahead by a few tenths when it counted.

Jesse got things sorted out for the Stock Main; but Charlie Johnson hung on his bumper the entire race; finishing less than two tenths back at the flag. Joel had concentrated on Spec, rather than Stock; and he wound up an uncharacteristic two laps back in third. Clayton Anderson had a bad day, fighting handling gremlins all the way; and trailed home in fourth. Oliver Campbell scratched out.

A good race; a fast crowd of racers; and a fun day. And that’s how it’s supposed to be, right? We go to the Road Course next weekend; for the first race of our Thunder Road Summer Series 2007. Thanks; Ernie P.

Well I will cycle mine up on the Turbo 35 and see what type of numbers I get so you can compair yours. I am glad that I could take down Beach with my new packs. That proves that the old yellow cells are not that much of an advantage. I guess it also shows he is not cheating, because I know all my stuff was bone stock. It is all driver and chassis. I am shooting to be out there on the 9th for some oval racing. The new points schedule is a little to aggressive for me to run the points series, but I will make it as much as possible.

06/09/07 Race Report

The first Oval Race of the Thunder Road Summer Series featured a disappointing turnout, but some great racing. Only four Spec NasTruck Class entries showed up; but what was lacking in numbers was made up for in intensity. With only one recent loss against a string of victories, the tanned, rested and ready Beach (AKA Mr. Steve Walker) showed up intending to take first place. Steve Herndon, who hasn’t raced in many moons, did his normal drop in and start running fast routine; and proved quality always shows. Harold Lam and Oliver Campbell were both looking very racy; as both continue to improve.

Harley Antal, at the grand old age of ten years finally ready to take his first real sortie into RC racing, was looking very impressive; buzzing around with a Spec Truck wrenched by his grandfather. He and newcomer Rick Schenck comprised the Novice Class; which provided its own brand of excitement. Schenck’s just completed Spec NasTruck got faster with every run; and he looked very comfortable for a newcomer.

The heats proved interesting. In Spec, Steve Herndon was all over Beach every time. What was even better was that Harold Lam and Oliver Campbell were right there with Steve. In fact, Harold took the first heat by a couple of tenths. Beach took the other two, trailed closely by Steve, with Harold and Oliver on the same lap most of the way.

Harley Antal took out himself and Rick in the first Novice heat; leaving an empty field. Harley then proceeded to blast past Rick in the second heat; until he ran into an immovable object with a very breakable truck. The damage was repaired in time for him to win the third heat; setting up an interesting Main.

The Spec Main was fast and competitive. Beach grabbed the lead at the start, and he was flying; but Steve Herndon stayed within a couple of seconds of him, all the way to the end. Harold Lam and Oliver Campbell had their own private fight going; and both stayed on the same lap with the leaders until very late in the race. A mid-race spin proved to be Oliver’s undoing. Although he was less than half a second behind Harold at the buzzer, he had to settle for fourth.

The Novice Main was Harley Antal’s all the way. He quickly put Rick Schenck several laps down; and it looked like only a crash could keep him from cruising to an easy first win, and in his first race. But, with 30 seconds remaining, his truck suddenly slowed dramatically. Harley’s battery was dumping badly; and it seemed doubtful he could make it to the end of the race. Within a few seconds, Harley was barely able to maintain movement; and Rick started eating into his several laps lead. All the spectators were yelling at Harley to keep going, even as Rick blasted by him time and time again. Somehow, Harley managed to catch the buzzer exactly right, crawling across the line just as the race ended. Rick was just over a second back at the flag; and was the first to congratulate his young opponent. Good sportsmanship, Rick!

A slim turnout; but a great day of racing. Thanks; Ernie P.

07/07/07 Race Report

On a date with all sevens, the promised “buttwhuppins” continued as Steve Walker tooled his SPEC NasTruck to victory yet again. A good field of SPEC trucks lined up to stop the Beach runaway, but all were spanked in turn as Beach rolled to yet another victory. After being challenged only briefly by Steve Herndon in the heats, Beach was the prohibitive favorite by the time the Mains rolled around.

The B Main led things off, with novice racer Harley Antal squared off against Rick Schenck and Harold Lam. Harley was fast enough to challenge, but crashed out early; leaving Harold Lam to lead almost every lap as he strolled home to a solid victory. The A Main pitted Steve Herndon, Jake Harper and Oliver Campbell, as the “Stop Beach Express”; but their efforts were derailed almost immediately. Beach jumped into a lead on the first corner and stroked his way to yet another victory in his Silva chassied NasTruck. Steve Herndon wrenched all day, but couldn’t quite find the right handle on his truck; but was still able to hold off Jake Harper for second place. Jake chased hard all race, and didn’t put a wheel wrong all race. He stayed within a second or two of Steve Herndon, and was less than a second back at the flag. Some updated equipment, and this recently unretired veteran will be tough. Oliver Campbell got behind in an early spin, and had to settle for fourth.

Indoor carpet racing may be in the midst of the summer doldrums, but the weather is no hotter than the racing. Come help push the “Stop Beach Express”, or get your own personalized buttwhuppins; but be there for Race Three of the summer points series on Saturday, July 21st. See you then. Thanks; Ernie P.

07/21/07 Race Report

Steve Walker (AKA Beach) had been talking a lot, challenging all to try to stay with his flying Silva chassied SPEC NasTruck. In recent weeks, Beach had been all but unbeatable, as he racked up one victory after another. On this Saturday, Jesse Bean, Steve Nelson (Seven) and Steve Herndon decided that had to end. Functioning as an impromptu “Stop Beach Team”, they pooled their resources and knowledge to end the win streak and the chatter.

At first, the task looked like it might be a tough one. Beach ripped off a fast first heat, good enough for TQ. Jesse managed to nip him in the second and third heats, as Beach tried some tweaks that didn’t seem to help. Harold Lam was making life difficult for Rick Schenck, easily winning all three of his heats with Rick a distant second. When the heats were over, Beach took TQ by a tenth from Jesse’s KSG truck, with Seven a couple of tenths back in his Darkside. Steve Herndon was fighting handling woes, and had to settle for fourth qualifier, a lap back.

In the A Main Beach lined up first; but a slow start allowed Jesse to squeeze inside at the first corner. A slight bump, and Jesse was through into the lead. With Beach momentarily slowed, Seven took advantage and ripped around the outside and into second place. Beach tried to regain second on the next lap, but another bump again slowed him enough to let Steve Herndon through into third. Two laps into the race, and the favorite was running fourth. Beach quickly gathered it up, passing Herndon and setting off after Seven and second place. With Jesse trying to do a disappearing act in first, and Seven running hard in second, Beach’s chances weren’t looking good.

It took Beach more than twenty laps before he finally caught Seven’s Darkside chassied truck; and several more laps before he finally managed to find a way past. By then, Jesse had a couple of tenths in hand; and was looking pretty secure. But then, with less than a minute remaining, Jesse had his own bumping incident going through turns three/four; and suddenly Beach was in striking distance. Less than a second back now, Beach was all over the rear bumper of Jesse’s truck. Then, with only a few seconds remaining, Beach slowed and them slowed some more. His battery was dumping; and dumping badly. Seven, still close after all this time, took aim at second place and closed quickly. Jesse took the win, with just over a second in hand; as Beach and Seven came across the line in a dead heat. The computer finally sorted thing out, and Beach held onto second place by one-one hundredths of a second. Steve Herndon claimed fourth, a couple of laps back.

The B Main featured Harold Lam; again leading easily and threatening to run away and hide. That is, the race looked that way for about three and one-half minutes. Harold had not gotten a full charge into his battery pack; and the last thirty seconds was a slow motion nightmare as Harold slowed a bit more with each lap. He finally came to a complete stop exiting turn four; and could only watch helplessly as Rick Schenck swept past for the win.

All in all a good racing weekend; although Beach may feel he has something to prove next time. Good racing, guys! Thanks; Ernie P.
