It doesn't sound very faithful to the cartoon series if they are casting Ricci as Trixie . I can sorta see Goodman as Pop and Matthew Fox does sound like a great choice for Racer X. I have no idea who Emile Hirsch is.

I can't see how they'll pull it off if it's not period and a parody, the whole concept of Speed Racer was even incredible goofy even in the sixties.

They'll save a lot of money by having the actors stand still for long periods of time, with speedlines behind them.

Or have them talking excitedly without moving any part of their body except for their mouths and talking in run-on sentences while only their mouths move and the monkey and annoying boy talk in the background while Pop gets angry and jumps up and down without moving any other part of his body and sometimes repeating themselves and doing it all on one breath!!!

Not to mention cross continent races punctuated by machine gun attacks, ninja attacks, helicopter attacks, monster truck attacks, and that gymnastic race team that likes to race with four or five cars stacked up on top of each other.

NASCAR is positively boring in comparison.

The bridge is out Speed! Ha HA!

It's okay. I have Gieco! HA!!

Yeah, we have to teach a new generation of kids how to hide in the trunk of a car.

Jeff! Great impressions!

Okay, Speed is supposed to be 18. Ricci is a bit old to be playing his girlfriend. Then again, she's younger than Tom Welling, who's also supposed to be 18 on TV.

That said, I've always said Ricci LOOKS like an anime character! Big big eyes, little heart-shaped face, small mouth, exaggerated figure...

Ricci strikes me as more of a Spriedel type. But if she can pull off Trixie's shrill, panicky "SPEEEEEEEEEED!" she might work.

Just gimme the Mammoth Car and I'll wait in line overnight.

That dope Anton Kutcher or whatsisname as goofball mechanic Sparky. Don't think they haven't considered it.

There's only one Mach 5 in my eyes. The 80s attempt to update the cartoon was completely uninteresting. They'd best stick with the original car design if they want the nostalgia audience. It was the coolest car ever, next to the 66 Batmobile.

Yeah, I should have said, I'm most SCARED to see what they do to the car.

The Mach 5 for sure is one of the coolest cars ever.

I'm guessing this will be in the vein of "Sky High", or the "Thunderbirds" movie that they did a couple of years ago. Or maybe that Herbie movie. At least that's what they should try for. If they stick with that kind of feel, It will be fun for kids, and enjoyable and nostalgic for adults. BUT...DON'T...CHANGE...THE...CAR!!!

John P
04-22-2007, 05:40 PM
Problem is, they make these films of 40-year-old cartoon properties for kids, but it's the adults who are nostalgic for them and want to see an adult version. meanwhile the kids never heard of the original and don't care about the remake.

Make an adult version that's accessible to the kids of the adults who WANT to see it. Not a kids' movie that turns the adults off.

Keep... the... CAR.

That is the ONLY sure-fire thing that will get my $9. Ricci can also get my money, but only on rental. Wow, did SHE ever grow up fine!

But this is about the car. The car. The Mach V. Yes.

Oh, and don't forget the over-use of CGI in scenes that don't need it (the Wachowski Bros. calling card).

I know she is too old now but way back when they first threatened us with a Speed racer movie, I thought Winona Ryder would have been perfect for Trixie.

Now my biggest worry is they change the car. NEVER change the Mach 5. The car was maybe a bigger star of the show to this kid, than Speed was! I agree with the above comment about the cartoon. When they tried a new Speed toon, my biggest gripe was I could not get past the fact they frakkin changed the M5. I watched maybe two episodes before I decided that this WAS NOT my Speed Racer!

Someone said Mammoth Car. I so would love that but I wanna see some GRX Baybeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But it's truly a loss that she had reduction surgery. She really didn't need it. Quite perfect the wat she was. :(

IMDB quotes Joel Silver as saying it's mostly being shot green screen.
So yes, rather a lot of CGI then...

A few years ago, I purchased a very well made comic book of Speed Racer made by some of the guys that made the original series. It ws serious, and more updated. The Mach 5 was updated as well. It still looked a lot like the old Mach 5, but more realistic and 'sports car' like, and not like that 'thing' that was on that animated show. I'm a die hard fan of the original design and even I liked what they did in the comic. So it is possible to alter the design and keep the essence of the original.

I'm actually looking forward to this film. The cast (to me at least) sounds perfect. I think Goodman is an excellent choice for pops, and don't forget that at their best, the Wachowski's did have a few moments of brilliance. As long as the movie doesn't get campy or silly, I think they might actually pull this thing off. Also, with current FX, can you imagine how crazy the racing scenes will look?

Well...yes The W brothers can make great stuff, but...

They made a realy expensive and kinetic, and yet strangely disapointing car chase for the Matrix sequel...

I'm hoping Speed Racer'll be great though!

There is a shot in that car chase that sums up what I think is wrong with the MATRIX movies. At one point, one of the agents leaps onto the hood of a car, smashing it in as he lands. However, they decided to slow down the action (they may have even frozen time) for the impact. Instead of the shot being about how powerful these agents are, it becomes about how neat a special effect it is.

I really liked the second Matrix film. The fights were visually jaw dropping. I've heard criticism about these films for crazy FX and "Awww, c'mon!' groans. Remember, it's 'your mind' doing that-not your physical body. I don't think some people got it. The one thing I didn't like though was Col. Sanders coming in at the end and confusing me beyond belief with his explanations.
