View Full Version : Man From Uncle DVD Release this year DR. PRETORIOUS 04-18-2007, 01:40 PM http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=7190 John P 04-18-2007, 07:54 PM WOOHOO!! Now, where's the rest of Miami Vice, dangit? frankenstyrene 04-18-2007, 08:30 PM 'bout time. I've only seen one or two original eps (but saw the return TV movie a couple times). Heard seasons 1 or 2 are the best, but after that the show just got silly. You old timers able to confirm or deny this? Zorro 04-18-2007, 10:00 PM 'bout time. Heard seasons 1 or 2 are the best, but after that the show just got silly. You old timers able to confirm or deny this? Having watched a number of episodes from various seasons on the American Life Channel over the last year, I would agree with this assessment. irishtrek 04-19-2007, 02:44 AM But what about The Girl From Uncle? Krel 04-19-2007, 02:09 PM 'bout time. I've only seen one or two original eps (but saw the return TV movie a couple times). Heard seasons 1 or 2 are the best, but after that the show just got silly. You old timers able to confirm or deny this? Season one is the best, followed by season two. In season three they went very camp, but in season four they dropped the camp and got too serious. Some say what killed the show was "Rowen, and Martin's Laugh In", but what really killed it was the anti-violence crusade that killed many of the action shows. David. Zorro 04-19-2007, 03:53 PM But what about The Girl From Uncle? About as good as it sounds. gruffydd 04-19-2007, 04:19 PM Is it inevitable to say "What about the models?" Or is that question and its ilk passe? John P 04-20-2007, 09:08 AM About as good as it sounds. Yeah, but ... Stephanie Powers! Yum! Dave Hussey 04-20-2007, 10:27 AM That's a show that I was too young to watch. (Do you know how great it feels to be able to say that?!!! ) So, I'll definitely be watching for these when they arrive in stores. Perhaps Moebius would repop the old Aurora figure kits from the show. Huzz John O 04-20-2007, 12:06 PM Open channel D! About dang time. John O. irishtrek 04-20-2007, 01:28 PM About as good as it sounds. The Girl From Uncle was a spin off in case you didn't already know. Bruce Bishop 04-20-2007, 01:55 PM I am excited at the prospect of buying the UNCLE dvd set(s). This was one of my absolutely most favorite shows, from a time when I had a LOT of favorites. Maybe 15 years ago I was really excited to be able to catch a few episodes on TNT, and rented a handful of VHS copies from a store. The one thing I really noticed was that, at first, the pacing seemed very very slow to me, after the (at that time) much faster pace of tv and movies. After watching 3 or 4 episodes I made the mental adjustment and was able to thoroughly enjoy the shows as much as I did when I was a teenager. Some episodes were, as is always the case, better than others, of course. One of the points I liked about the show was that the guys were part of a large organization with branches and support all over the world. I don't know why I liked the show so much, certainly that aspect doesn't account for my liking. The gadgets, and the more 'unusual' episodes certainly drew my attention. I loved the UNCLE car, although it was apparently in real life a gigantic lemon. It sure looked cool on the tv. I liked the characters and friendship and loyalty shown, as well as giving frequent glimpses of the background departments and work being done to keep the enforcement personnel in business. It showed that the support personnel are just as important as the flashy agents, just in different ways, which is what I found to be true in the real world of work when I grew up. I also liked how they would end up with a normal citizen wrapped into the stories, because it made it seem like anyone could end up in an adventure. Even trying to describe why I think so fondly of the show, the main thing is that I just really enjoyed it at the time. Zorro 04-20-2007, 02:23 PM The Girl From Uncle was a spin off in case you didn't already know. Yes, I know. And the show was about as good as are most spin-offs. They run it on The American Life Channel as well. frankenstyrene 04-20-2007, 05:30 PM what really killed it was the anti-violence crusade that killed many of the action shows. David. I remember the one from the early '80s (recall hearing Mr. Rogers was involved, and that this is when Warner Bros. toons edited out Daffy's head getting blown off 5 different ways) but did not know there was one back in the late '60s. Then again, it figures. *...darn hippies...* Zorro 04-20-2007, 06:29 PM I remember the one from the early '80s (recall hearing Mr. Rogers was involved, and that this is when Warner Bros. toons edited out Daffy's head getting blown off 5 different ways) but did not know there was one back in the late '60s. Then again, it figures. *...darn hippies...* UNCLE wasn't killed because of any anti-vilolence crusade. It just burned out. NTRPRZ 04-21-2007, 09:53 PM <<< Some say what killed the show was "Rowen, and Martin's Laugh In", but what really killed it was the anti-violence crusade that killed many of the action shows. >>> Nope, not true, at least the part about Rowan and Martin. It replaced UNCLE on NBC Monday nights at 8 p.m. I remember it vividly. I was 14 and a huge UNCLE fan. I was crushed when the show was cancelled. Still, I'm glad to see UNCLE coming to DVD. I'll be sure to buy the full set of each season. BTW, be sure to check out "The Project Strigas Affair," with William Shatner playing a bug exterminator, Leonard Nimoy as a toadie at a "Eastern European" embassy, and a pre-Hogan's Heroes Werner Klemperer playing the ambassador. Jeff Krel 04-22-2007, 12:53 PM The claim is that TMFU was canceled so that R&MLI could have the spot. I don't know why they couldn't have just moved TMFU, as they bounced the show around quite a bit. I guess it comes from the fact that CBS canceled "Gilligan's Island" to bring back "Gunsmoke". I disagree that the show was burned out, the were some good episodes in the fourth season, it just didn't have the humorous touch that the first season had. Sam Rolfe said that the problem with the show is that they stopped treating U.N.C.L.E. like a real organization. It was the attention to the details in the beginning that made the show, and they got sloppy. David. Zorro 04-22-2007, 02:31 PM Plus, the "Spy Craze" had largely passed. 1968 was not 1964 is all I'm sayin'. UNCLE rode a pop culture wave and that wave petered out. frankenstyrene 04-22-2007, 07:38 PM I'm just glad they're going to release the show before anyone who might remotely be interested in it dies of old age or goes...um...what's that word when you start forgetting stuff... swhite228 04-23-2007, 01:25 AM I guess it comes from the fact that CBS canceled "Gilligan's Island" to bring back "Gunsmoke". IDavid. All those involved with Gilligan's Island like to point out that Gilligan's Island was never canceled officially! Gunsmoke had been canceled but no one at CBS had the guts to tell William Palley because he liked Gunsmoke! During the fall planning meetings Palley placed Gunsmoke back on the program grid and the rest is history. It was said that to keep from getting fired the person who told Palley (knowing he loved Gunsmoke)the news said something to the effect of And we also canceled that show that begines with a g.
