Comic Book Hero Captain America Dies in Latest Issue of Comic That Hits Stands Wednesday
03-07-2007 6:52 AM
NEW YORK (Associated Press) -- Captain America has undertaken his last mission _ at least for now. The venerable superhero is killed in the issue of his namesake comic that hit stands Wednesday, the Daily News reported.
On the new edition's pages, a sniper shoots down the shield-wielding hero as he leaves a courthouse, according to the newspaper.
It ends a long run for the stars-and-stripes-wearing character, created in 1941 to incarnate patriotic feeling during World War II. Over the years, an estimated 210 million copies of "Captain America" comic books, published by New York-based Marvel Entertainment Inc., have been sold in a total of 75 countries.
But resurrections are not unknown in the world of comics, and Marvel Entertainment editor in chief Joe Quesada said a Captain America comeback wasn't impossible.
Still, the character's death came as a blow to co-creator Joe Simon.
"We really need him now," said Simon, 93, who worked with artist Jack Kirby to devise Captain America as a foe for Adolf Hitler.
According to the comic, the superhero was spawned when a scrawny arts student named Steve Rogers, ineligible for the army because of his poor health but eager to serve his country, agreed to a "Super Soldier Serum" injection. The substance made him a paragon of physical perfection, armed only with his shield, his strength, his smarts and a command of martial arts.
In the comic-book universe, death is not always final. But even if Captain America turns out to have met his end in print, he may not disappear entirely: Marvel has said it is developing a Captain America movie.

Have no fear. They will bring him back. But this time Cap will be a girl like StarBuk on BSG. Or better yet he'll be a man, but in real life a cross-dresser.:freak: Joe Quesada=what's wrong with comics today. He knows better.

I'm sure they're just working towards something along the lines of what DC Comcis did with Superman. Never fear! Cap ain't gonna be gone for good.

I heard he was coming back as "Captain North American Union."

He was going to change his name to "Captain Planet," but that was taken already.

He'll be a genetic recreation of the original Captain with added genetic material from Mexicans and Canadians. In addition to his shield, he'll wear a pair of protective moose antlers and hit evil-doers with his super-maracas. :D

In the year 2008, Captain America jumps on and disables a nuclear missile launched by Kim Jong il but falls off somewhere over the Arctic and becomes frozen in an iceburg. But with advanced Global Warming he thaws out in time for the following month's issue - at which point he is attacked and nearly killed by starving Polar Bears who are ravenous due to their rapidly melting environment. Because of the Super Serum he recovers and actually befriends the Polar Bears by the following month's issue - in which President Dick Cheney undertakes an Arctic safari to shoot Polar Bears and "fight them there so that we don't have to fight them here". Captain America attempts to protect the Polar Bears at which point President Cheney shoots him in the face and kills him.

Personally, I'd suggest "Captain South America" starring Shakira. Huzz

Cheney would never do anything like that! That's so unrealistic!

Hunting wild polar bears might be dangerous, would involve some work, and require some skill. Change that to hunting pen-raised tame polar bears that are too fat to do anything but waddle slowly in their enclosure next to a road that a SUV full of beer-swilling "sportsmen" can drive on, and I might be able to buy it.

I'm not sure how making fun of someone's hunting ethics and skills (or more accurately the lack of) translates into "getting political", but hey, what do I know?

Oh, come on, Scott. It's pretty blatant.

Let's keep politics out of it. After all, Captain America is about our great nation, not the inherent political claptrap. Ask yourself this - What Would Cap Do...?

I guess I shouldn't bother complaining about the total lack of spoiler warnings, 'cause this is the third bboard I've unwittingly read this news on.

I haven't picked my comics up yet this month, dammit!

The title on MSN's main page didn't offer any spoiler warnings. I'm pretty sure his "offing" was only in one of the alternate universe titles, not the mainstream ones, but, it doesn't really matter, like Star.....er........spoiler alert...... He ain't dead.

Now he's Colonel America. After 60 years as a Captain it's about time.

Saw this on msn news, the story relates to the comic book, but I posted it here because they did say there is a movie in the works.

Spandex uniforms give that all important hug to a Superhero that lacked the nurturing love from parental love having to face the tragic loss that sent them over the edge to become a crime fighter. Long live Spandex lol

Well, I'm certain we haven't seen the last of Steve Rogers. I read the books faithfiully for many years but finally quit because storyline "cross-over mania" aggrevaiated the h*** outta me after several months.
Speaking of characters that never "really" die, did the "real" Red Skull ever finally check into the bone yard?

As if there was something "wrong" with it, I guess I got a very blatant (and insidiously silent) censorship of my last message. Those really quiet little ones are the ones where they're embarrassed and know you're right, so they just take you out in a back alley somewhere very quietly and you become one of the "disappeared". Pretty blatanttly un-american, in fact, about as un-american as you can get.

I DELETED your post because you were BLATANTLY TROLLING w/your comments. Instead of publicly reprimanding you and reminding you of TOS, I thought I would go with a little discretion and give you a chance to perhaps cool your heels - something I find to be wholly American. If you'd prefer that I engage you in some sort of testosterone laden match of public insults, you've got the wrong guy.

However, feel free to shoot me an email or a PM if you feel that you must do so. Otherwise, all you're doing is TROLLING.
