View Full Version : Omaha Race Postponed till next week
Sonny B 03-02-2007, 12:39 PM Sorry guys looks like mother nature is going to take her first win of the season. Every highway into Omaha is shut down. The roads are covered and blowing and drifting snow is preventing the plows from clearing them.
After talking with the Hobbyplex crew in the interest of safety we fell the best decision is to postpone the race until next weekend.
Sorry guys there just is no good decision in this situation. For those that have spent the money to travel or taken the time off work I apologize for the inconvenience. But I would feel much worse if somebody got hurt in a car accident trying to get to the race. After all it is just a hobby.
Sonny, I know that had to be a very tough decision. We must remember you can't fool mother nature. I just checked and 80 west of Des Moines is still closed.
I do feel bad for those that have either made it there or have made an attempt.
See you next weekend.
AJ
OvalTrucker 03-02-2007, 01:02 PM That's a bummer. But it is the safe thing to do.
It's not worth anybody getting hurt.
Sonny B 03-02-2007, 01:20 PM I know some of the Michigan crew are traveling through Illinois and Iowa right now.
So the weekend is not a total loss Allen from Allens R/C just called and is willing to open up his track in Springfield for practice tonight at 4pm and racing tomorrow. I will confirm the race time but it will most likely be a noon start on Saturday.
More info coming soon.
KLEIN-12 03-02-2007, 01:20 PM that's too bad, but what can ya do!!? I know that was hard call to make!!
as i sit in omaha(lol)i wonder why wasnt the desicion made as the evening of the weather instead of the day when we are to arrive.now the oppertunity to come to the race is gone.if we would have known last nite we could have changed our plans.
"Frank Ulbrik" 03-02-2007, 01:39 PM IMO, next weekend's rescheduled race should not be a points race.
P.S. Alot of the Mi. guys are going to allens tonite and tomorrow.
jimmy24 03-02-2007, 01:43 PM it is dissapponitng but you cant fight mother nature, good luck to those who race next weekend, i'll be in vegas for the cup race
CBear3 03-02-2007, 01:54 PM Well that sucks, but if next weekend's race isn't a points race that isn't fair for everyone either. I'm sure I'm not the only one who sat down and said I have to make three of these races before Nats and Omaha was going to be one of them. I'd have been there tonight with sled dogs, or next week without :)
Mr.Wolfman 03-02-2007, 01:57 PM It is a rough job to make the decisions. and you can not make EVERYONE happy.
Will try to attend next weekend.
Hope everyone makes it home safely.
jenzorace 03-02-2007, 02:03 PM Damn, I was stoked! Looks like allens saturday, twin bridges sunday. I cant do omaha next week. Too many races this month, vinton and the nats.
HobbyPLEX 03-02-2007, 02:08 PM as i sit in omaha(lol)i wonder why wasnt the desicion made as the evening of the weather instead of the day when we are to arrive.now the oppertunity to come to the race is gone.if we would have known last nite we could have changed our plans.
It's always a tough call with the weather, there was a chance that the weather could have broke and everything could have worked out. We're very sorry that it didn't. With the roads being closed and safety being our first concern, unfortunately, postponement was the best choice.
The track will be open today for practice and we will be racing tomorrow if anyone is interested.

JOHNNYTANLINE 03-02-2007, 02:35 PM As one of the guys who $pent Hundred$ to get here, (Omaha), only to find it canceled
it's obvious that I'm disappointed. We fly home Sunday & doubt we'll make it next week. Now that's our choice, but to suggest next weekends race NOT be a "points"
race wouldn't be fair. People across the mid-west have paid a much greater price for
this storm, and that tempers my disappointment for sure.
Sonny, one suggestion, a pre-determined plan, or a protocall as to what make a BRL
race, (#-entries, etc,) and what and/or when, (especially the latter) to call-off a
race. I know this can be very difficult, but sooner is allways better. . . After all,
many racers were allready enroute. I never saw the need to even consider a weather
cancellation plan for indoor racing, but I see it now. . .
Thank-You again Sonny for all your work & effort, when it's all fun and games, and
when the decisions are very tuff.
I'm sure that togather, we can do better
John S.

haysreeling 03-02-2007, 02:52 PM Hays......what time they start?
Original plan was track opens at 8 am with racing at 12, but they might give us some more practice time if more people show up. I just talked to Matt and he said he's planning on going.

Joey 3 03-02-2007, 02:57 PM Tough call, but probably for the best. I hope everyone gets home safe.l
KLEIN-12 03-02-2007, 02:59 PM won't be able to make the next weekends race to short of notice, other commitments for that weekend..
jake86 03-02-2007, 03:25 PM I'm giong to agree with some of the guys on here. Next week needs to be for points for the ones like me that where only going to make 4 races.
"Frank Ulbrik" 03-02-2007, 03:50 PM I'll be there next week for 4300. should still be a good race.
Sonny B 03-02-2007, 03:54 PM It will be a points race.
philb1 03-02-2007, 04:00 PM Hope to have as many as possible here next week, snow is not bad down in my 'hood, got to the Plex today and had to do some shoveling.
Danny B 03-02-2007, 04:05 PM While I'm disappointed that we didn't get to race this weekend. I think it would have been a killer turnout. It was for the best. It has actually gotten worse, there are more roads closed now then there were this morning. We had an alternate route picked out but that is now closed too.
In almost 15 years of racing I don't remember any race I've gone to or planned to go to being canceled or postponed...lol I also don't ever remember roads being closed the way they are now. We made our way come hell or high water to Dubuque, Vinton, Oshkosh, Madison, Milwaukee, Cinncinati. Those are just a few off the top of my head that I can remember being in snow storms.
I still think the ICE storm last weekend was worse...there are still roughly 50,000 people in rural areas of Iowa without power since last Saturday.
I hope everyone gets home safe and I hope that many will still be able to make next weekend.
jake86 03-02-2007, 05:24 PM I'm in for 4300. Maybe some Mod.

Curt H 03-02-2007, 05:55 PM Hit the road this morning at 6am. Just got back.
I made it to Newton IA. When I got a call from my spotter AJ & gave me the bad news. Disapointed yes but mother nature can throw you a curve when you least expect it.
I got gas just before I turned around, The blowing wind from the NW was crazy. Got back it my car & thought what the hell am I doing out here?
Yes it would have been nice to know last night if it was a go, but what if it would have cleared up ?
Will try very hard to make it next week. I think Sonny made a very tuff call & the correct one.
Thanks again AJ
Curt
Mark #10 03-02-2007, 06:15 PM It just like at the Local Dirt Track. Ur Damned if you do, Ur damned if you dont. If it rains in the morning and the track is muddy and looks like more rain is coming & cancel, you take the heat when it turns out ok. If you run, and get rained out half way through the show, you get the heat for running.
Good Call Sonny. I think those on their way would have had a tough time getting there with the roads and what not. Sucks for those there, but I think it was the best move overall.
"The Steiner Bros" will be there next weeked!!
 Head of "The Steiner Bros";Mark
Sonny B 03-02-2007, 08:36 PM Thanks guys.
Here at Allen's tonight about 20 cars so far
Plan is to open at 8am tomorrow and start racing a noon.
Come on down....
MikeM 03-03-2007, 10:53 AM Good call Sonny, safety was the question here guys. We will try and make it next week if driver can get off. Stop in on the way home on Sun. in Kenosha could be a fun race!
As it turns out a better call than I thought, at of 8:49 AM Interstate 80 west of Des Moines is still closed as well as Interstate 29. Already looking forward to next weekend.
SDL98 03-03-2007, 02:14 PM From the looks of the DesMoines truck stops on tv there will be about 500 trks hitting the road when it opens. So many trks were down they had to start parking them at the large mall lot in w-DesMoines
HobbyPLEX 03-03-2007, 07:23 PM We will be racing tomorrow! If the roads get cleared and you want to get some track time. Doors open at 8AM and racing is at 11:30AM. Track was fast today.

BallisticBill 03-03-2007, 07:31 PM 5:20 PM. Central. Through Binoculars, I can see traffic now moving on I-29 south of Sioux City for the first time in--what 3 days. About all I see are bumper to bumper semi's doing about 30 mph. Heard there are cars and trucks all over the place stuck in snow drifts along the interstate. Snow plow just came down our road. Drifts approaching 10 feet or more. Travel is still not recommended in the area. This was a biggy. Got stuck in the snow myself yesterday with a 4 wheel drive Ford pickup 1/4 mile from our house. Took a tractor and loader to get it out.
swtour 03-04-2007, 02:29 AM Calling off a race is one of the hardest things a race director/promoter can do...we've had rain on our season Kick-Off race for the past 3 years...after 18 years of NEVER having a race cancelled due to rain.
This year, I found a Carpet track to kick off the season...of couse it was 85 DEGREES that day...but it did start raining about a hour and a 1/2 after our race ended...so it was a good we were ready.
That SNOW doesn't look one bit fun from here in Sunny CA...
YOU GUYS BE SAFE -
KLEIN-12 03-04-2007, 12:32 PM sonny did right thing by calling off, "we all lived to race another day"
jenzorace 03-04-2007, 09:57 PM Ya i admit, good call sonny. See you guys at allens. The BRL RULES....
rickk5 03-05-2007, 10:51 AM Sonny Made The Only Choice He Could It Was The Right Choice!!!~ We Had A Blast At Allens!!! Glad SOME OF The Michigan Militia Came Down It Was Alot Of Fun!!! See You All Next Weekend!
oldguy 03-05-2007, 12:18 PM You saw some of the MM, but you did NOT see all of it. Some of the more senior members did not attempt the trip west this past weekend. But, I thnink that the MM will be there again in almost full force at the end of the month.

THAT WILL BE EVEN BETTER!!!!
crisis641 03-08-2007, 11:57 AM I know there were a lot of people who weren't happy with Sonny's call about postponing the race. Look at these pictures taken by the Iowa DOT Snow Plow Crews in western Iowa and you will see that if he didn't call the race, nobody would have made it anyway(except for those flyboys).
http://www.iowadot.gov/2007_blizzard.html
Cool pictures! I'm still surprised that the roads were closed for so long. I guess I'm just used to MI though. That stuff wouldn't be as big of a deal here. We probably have more snow removal eqip here.
You're right. We wouldn't have made it there.
burbs 03-08-2007, 01:35 PM Iowa is so flat, there isnt anything to stop the blowinf snow...I think thats the worst part... Wisconsin got hit pretty good to.. i only had 6-8 foot drifts in my back yard tho.. 20 would have sucked.. The poepl who complained need to remeber.. You cant race if your not alive.. i give Sonny credit for taking peoples well being into consideration.. I know some race would have still kept it going..
