Hey guy's, with all the choices we have out there for pan cars, what's your opinion on the car of choice for the velodrome???? and not the custom made chassis, I'm talking more about a car or chassis that is for public to buy...

An L3 will work ok. However, if you're going to do a lot of Velodrome racing, a custom chassis will not be all that expensive.

I'm not sure of all the rules that the PDX guys use, but we've probably got close to a 50/50 mix of L3's and Custom chassis out here.

LARCGuy (Scot) has one of THE fastest Mod cars out here..and uses a custom chassis designed by himself and Randy Smith of "Big Boy's Toys" they call a Stryker. VERY SMOOTH and VERY FAST.

I just picked up 2 new SPARE L3 chassis to keep my cars alive for a long time. I also run a couple of the REALLY OLD HPI Oval Cars in the Nastruck class. (I like them because of the NO T-PLATE)

If you've never run a VELO, build an inexpensive car - or use something you already have...just make sure to make the body as LOW DRAG as possible (No RAKE)... run a very Flat wing with LARGE Side Dams...mounted back and low....I like a big FOAM front bumper...shaped to fit tightly against the front nose of the body as well...

If oyu are going to run a high speed body some of the newer chassis' are too wide.L3 with long pod plates works very well.

Thanks for all the info, I have ran at the velodrome several times but wanted other racers opinion on what they like to run.. As far as a custom built chassis I have seen quite a few out there but are parts avalible for them?? I also run an L3 to but thought about an L4 because the chassis is easier to get.

Running Mod with a hooked up car on a Velodrome is one of my all time favorite things. It is awesome!

For the Indy Velodrome - indycar should move to brushless - 6-cell 13.5 or 4-cell 4300 for this year. If people don't want to make the jump, then I say run everyone together.

As far as a good Velodrome car - the 10L3o with IRS extended pods makes a great Velo chassis. I threw one together last year and was on a track record pace in 6-cell stock Nastruck- plus I was running saddle pack batteries!

I've seen that somebody out there is making a front end setup using the VCS Micro shocks, for bumpy (velo) tracks. I think it may be big boy's toys. I think that may be in the works for my car this year.

Brad,

BigBoy'sToys does a velo chassis and has a version of the old Associated Dual Sport type suspension that is used on our bumpy velo here in Calif.

The basic front end was done by Jake Rosen (Jake's Performance Hobbies) for the '95 or '96 NORRCA Velodrome Nationals(Known as the "ECONOGLIDE). He put together a front end using the Dual Sport suspension to combat the Custom Works type front suspensions (Like the 2wd Intimidator uses) Several years later this design was revamped a little by Donn Natale (Known out here as the DNA front end) Randy from BigBoysToys has a slightly different mounting set up for his.

The 2 shock front ends really help smooth the cars down, but in the past they were not allowed at the INDY races because they were using ROAR RULES which prohibitied the use of more than 3 shocks. (USE A SPRING REAR END ie: HPI RoadStar - or Dillon Tweak w/ damper tube) then you got NO PROBLEM W/ the ROAR RULES!

I think Nic Case had the FAST LAP at our December VELO race using the MAMBA, running a 8.9 second lap. (I thought he had run a 8.7, but couldn't find it in our results..but I didn't look TOO hard.

Scot Peiticlerc ran a new TQ going 31 laps in 5 minutes, but ran a really conservative lap times (if you can consider mid 9's conservative) in order to make time and Set the 5 min. mod record. Scot runs a 3.5

Stock motor still not a bad option but seen how that alot of racers are going brushless, it maybe the only way to go.. I just like the idea of one motor, but yes the heat specially in july and august does concern me, and will the motor and speedcontrol shut down due to over heating?

allah-i have a total of 4 race days at the velo so 3.5........no way.yes dave and i ran a leading edge prototype indy cars and after an incedent dave had with that erich kid there is only one left and its mine.i have been working on it the last few days redesigning the rear end of it so i 'll have sumthing for that smith guy.but i guess if everyone does go brushless this summer then that leaves more time for me to go fishing.

02-27-2007, 08:46 PM
An "incident with that Erich kid"? Are you trying to say Dave got stuffed and broke his Shiznit? I don't think I can count with all my fingers and toes how many cars I have demolished over the years at that place. But man, it sure is fun!!

Brian, what's your opinion on the heat effecting the motor and speedo at the Velo? 4-cell 4300 if I could/wanted to afford it.....

IndyRC_Racer

On an Indycar I'm not concerned with the heat of the motor, but the possibility of the speedo overheating. There just isn't that much room under those bodies. I think we might have to run a cooling fan on the speedo if it is a hot day. I don't know if anyone was running brushless at Encino last summer, but it was hot enough to cause heat stroke so that might have been a good test.

The biggest reason I wanted to go brushless was to eliminate motor as a variable at the Indy Velodrome. The gearing difference between a P2K2 and a CO-27 was at least 10 teeth to get the same speeds. If everyone were running the same (brushless) motor, then there would be less excuse about going slow. Plus it would help some of the father/son racers out there with less maintenance.

...nah Encino wasn't all that HO~~T - 118 degrees at 2pm with a track temp of 156 on the concrete.

Them tires may be for HOT weather...but they DID NOT Like that much heat~

Nick, Thanks!! The powder greatly helped. I'll have to start avoiding those cheap hole in the wall (.) (.) bars.

I still have one of the old ADX Velo rides with the center mounted batteries and single pivot rear pod. She is also flaunting the x-tra long wheelbase.

ovalmaster, do you guys race on a velodrome up there?

moss, I sold alot of my R/C stuff. But I still pop in here once in a while just to see what you guys are up to. I am trying to go do some full size racing this summer. It looks like I might do my first road race later his month in a formula ford. Do you have that Maverick car all dialed in yet?

Allah, If you are waiting on the next generation you might be waiting a while. Plus why should I make a new one when the current version can still get the job done.

Maybe I'll have to stop by the velo and watch you guys this summer. Plus maybe I'll get the chance to see my hero Nick!

Nick, you still got them special tires you used to win the Bud's race at Mattoon?!?!

Nick - You are my hero too! How in the world you won that race there on velo tires is still beyond me. :freak:

Allah - YOU'RE ALIVE!!! Quit being a tool and call me sometime!

Moss - You're a rolling r/c museum. I'm amazed that you even have the Intar-web! Welcome to the millenium. :jest:

The last time I was at the velo, here's what happened:

1. I was trying to hold down the tent with 10 other guys during the monsoon.
2. ALL of Allah's stuff was soaking wet (water was POURING out of his T-30's, but they still worked when they dried).
3. I thought I was going to die from an infection which caused some minor mutation in my leg (still no idea what caused it and thankfully, I have been mutation free ever since).
4. Miller brought his RW (please don't ask me what that stands for) and that kept me laughing all weekend.

Good times...
