View Full Version : James Harvey Hilton McLin 02-16-2007, 12:30 AM What will you be doing when you turn 72 years old? swtour 02-16-2007, 01:25 AM Wow...did you see the SMILE on that mans face after the qual. race... How...er um...what's the word...exciting would it have been...if HE had finished where he was with just 8 laps to go or what ever it was..when he was in 8th place..and bumping MW out. mc43 02-16-2007, 08:08 AM too bad his clutch failed Mr.fastman 02-16-2007, 09:59 AM Yea, that sure was a big smile. He said we'll get em next time! Dale Epp 02-16-2007, 11:21 AM Ol' James was awsome! Sitting in 5th place with 6 laps to go - I sure was hoping he's somehow do it. Can you imagine all the pacemakers that were on the rev-limiter in Del Boca Vista. Oh Ya! Dale ovalnewb21 02-16-2007, 02:11 PM i felt bad for him when his clutch broke, oh well like he said, he'll get em next year doubledeuce 02-16-2007, 03:56 PM I thought that I would share a funny story about an experince I had with James Hilton a few years ago....... I was actually James Hilton's crew chief at Pocono for a few minutes!!! let me explain......As I was walking thru the hot pits before an ARCA race at Pocono in the late 80's, A man reached out and grabbed me by the sleeve pulled me next to him and said: When you hear that man up there call out my name (James Hilton), I will yell "here", then when he calls out "crew chief", you yell, "here". What I did not realize at first was that the ARCA driver's meeting was about to start and apparently James Hilton's crew chief overslept or something, so he needed a random voice from the crowd to "stand in" as his crew chief. When the time came, I yelled "here" as planned and the ARCA officials were none the wiser. I talked with James for a few minutes afterward, he thanked me and he went racing and I went to the grandstands to cheer him on. He fell out of the race early, but ever since I have been a fan of his. He has made a career out of racing in the big time series with little to no support. One the last true independant racers. It would have been awesome to seem him make the 500.... ovalnewb21 02-16-2007, 09:46 PM wow, thats pretty cool gezer2u 02-16-2007, 10:03 PM After hearing all this, He has one more fan! That's cool! Mr.fastman 02-16-2007, 11:53 PM wow, thats pretty cool Ditto... kevina250 02-16-2007, 11:56 PM I guess you don't want to know what he did to my Dad then back in the mid 70's at the World 600. I'll let it be. Joey 3 02-17-2007, 06:47 PM Thats to bad he didn't make it. It sure would have been fun to see if he could have ran the whole 500 miles. I bet he would have made it. Kevina, Who's your dad? ovalnewb21 02-17-2007, 06:53 PM I guess you don't want to know what he did to my Dad then back in the mid 70's at the World 600. I'll let it be. what happend? kevina250 02-18-2007, 08:47 PM Back in the mid 70's my Dad was asked to drive one of Hiltons cars at the 600. He qualified mid pack and blowed the engine in final practice. They worked all night to get the car ready for the race on Sunday. After diver intro Hilton told Dad to park the car after two laps. Made Dad's crew and my Dad upset. After that Hilton mailed Dad a $200 check. Dad sent it back with a note saying he(Hilton) needed it more than him. Dad just couldn't beleive he wanted showup money more than seeing how the car would finish. Also what upset him more was that Dad felt bad about someone he outqualified didn't make the race that runs the full schedule. It is just his personality. Just not a love for that man in this family. TEAM_lost. 02-18-2007, 11:15 PM dude ya just can hold some one to one thing ya know? people do stupid things without thinking and dont mean it, i wouldent hold it against him if i were you mike kevina250 02-19-2007, 10:14 AM It was just the point of it. swtour 02-19-2007, 04:53 PM kevin, Back in the '70's there were several drivers who did similar (Kinda like the field fillers from a year or two ago) They were "Professional" Race car drivers by profession...yet they didn't actually get a lot of competitive seat time. My dad pitted for a guy who would come in about 20 laps into a race..and have the crew change spark plugs...just to kill time waiting for the BIG WRECK so he could pick up some spots. This guy made a decent living...doing what he loved..and got to drive really fast once in a while too. (He wasn't there too WIN) DIRTsportsman 02-19-2007, 09:44 PM As a DIRT Modified driver myself i have to say that i couldnt imagine going to the race track with any intent other then to hit the track on kill mode for everylap. But this thread is about James Hilton so i have to say that i respect him for trying but i have to think they would have rooted him out of the draft before it was all over. Still kool to see an indepentent driver from the 70s run well. kevina250 02-19-2007, 09:50 PM My Dad won the Nascar Grand American Series that same year. He looked at it as a chance to step up and show his talent. It was blown away then. I understand that the show up money was there. But don't burst someones bubble just for that. It was kinda good to see someone from the 70's doing well at Daytona, but just don't have a place for him. Rather see Dave Marcus do it. But Hylton is/was a pioneer in the 70's. Off my bandwagon now. Joey 3 02-21-2007, 07:04 PM I know a guy that did that in the Busch series a couple of times in the last few years. I does'nt make it right, but it obviously pays the bills. What I hate is it bumps out people who are giving it there all and would run the entire race. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
