I loved his work! The first time I really discovered his past work, was his interviews about the Black Hole. I am glad that his children, followed his footsteps.

Sad news, his work improved a lot of movies. I can remember first reading about him as a kid in Starlog, and being amazed how many of my favorite movies featured his work.

Wow. The Disney art stores at Walt Disney World (and at other Disney parks, I'm sure) sells prints of a lot of the paintings he's done in the last several years (commissioned paintings, not his matte work). Many times have I wished I had the money to get one of them. I just bought a jigsaw puzzle a few days ago of a painting he did of Sorceror Mickey from Fantasia.

A true Disney Legend.

Ellenshaw was a true artist whose work revolutionized the industry.
The paintings he did for Mary Poppins were unbelievably beautiful, and unforgettable. His paintings in Dick Tracy were the reason I went to see the film in the theater.
He was an inspiration to three generations of effects artists, whether they ever knew his name or not. I'm sad that he's gone, but he had a wonderful career and life.
Bon Voyage, Peter.

My dad worked for Disney in England and was somewhat involved with the production of the Disney live-action films made in the 50's. One of these was an Elizabethan drama called "The Sword and the Rose (http://www.amazon.com/Sword-Rose-Richard-Todd/dp/6302629195)" - I know, you've never heard of it. Peter Ellenshaw did matte work for many studios, including Disney, and he painted one of ships anchored in the harbor for this film. After the completion of the film, Ellenshaw painted in sky, land and water (the matte was painted on glass) and it was given to my dad.

It now hangs on my sister's wall in England. As much as I'd love to have it, it's still a large piece of glass (about 3' x 4') and would probably not make the trip across the Atlantic.

Still it's nice to have an original Elllenshaw in the family.

Ditto on all counts, including the comments about your story, Jim. What a wonderful keepsake for the family.
