View Full Version : Motor Dip ?
jferland4 01-30-2007, 09:18 AM I was just whondering whats everyones input on motor dip.......
And, I know some people use different things but whats in the stuff that people are using thats blue....
N2RACN 01-30-2007, 10:02 AM good luck getting that answer. most will not tell a soul whats in it. dont see the reasoning behind it. hope someone will shed a little light on whats in them.
Tommygun43 01-30-2007, 10:31 AM It's probobly safety kleen your talking about (parts washer). Seems to work better on F brushes than Putnams. It cleans the crap out of the motor and seats the brushes in quicker. You won't see any huge gains by using it.

Tommygun43 is right!
The best stuff that I found to use as a motor dip cleaner/breakin is denatured alcohol in a small can.
Just run in motor submerged at 3 volts for 10-15 secounds.
Leaves no residue on brushes or bearings.
And will no attack plastic so its safe to use.
Can be used over and over again just strain through a coffee filter or change with new denatured alcohol.

ta_man 01-30-2007, 07:16 PM That stuff is very flamable! be verrry careful.

I hope your medical and fire insurance is payed up. Yikes!!! It's definitely not "safe" to use.
DIRTsportsman 01-30-2007, 07:37 PM I have always used denatured alchohol with no problems. Just get two masson jars fill one with alcohol and use a coffee filter to strain the dirty fluid back and forth between the two jars. By the way you can find it at any drug store or walmart type store.
davepull 01-30-2007, 07:56 PM Ok now here's a question WHY??
Ok now here's a question WHY??
Dave we used to do it years ago. It will seat the brushes in about 15-20". We never messed with alchohol...we just used water , pulled out the motor and spray it down with motor cleaner.
dave w 1 01-30-2007, 09:02 PM most of the fast guys around here use saftey clean after a run we dip it in a jar clausen jars are better i think the left over pickle juice does something lol. for abought 20 sec then i flush out with motor spray and re oil after its cool i re dyno to get rollout re adjusted

LOL!!
Denatured Alcohol is not as flamable as you think.
Years ago there was a company that sold it in a can.
I'll try to remember the name and post it.

yah but why? what does it do?
gezer2u 01-30-2007, 09:23 PM Wade, that's exactly the way we did it. The alcohol absorbs the water so you don't get any rusting. Motor spray will do the same, but costs more. Water will break those brush's in QUICK! lol
martian 710 01-30-2007, 09:28 PM LOL!!

I'm pretty sure denatured alcohol is just ethanol with an additive to make it undrinkable. Years ago I used to use Bolink Electrowhirl I don't think it was alcohol though.
yah but why? what does it do?
the reason ......
1. Breaks in brushes reallllly quick
2. It will not arc the comm during break in so comm stays cleaner
3. Cleans the crap out of the motor with out wasting 50 thousand dollars on motor spray
davepull 01-30-2007, 09:40 PM so provides no real performance enhancement. seems to me someone saw a fast guy doing it now they are doing it.
martian 710 01-30-2007, 09:47 PM Straight off a can of S-L-X denatured alcohol. "DANGER! Flammable. Keep away from heat ,sparks, flame and all other sources of ignition. Vapors may case flash fire or ignite explosively Extinguish all pilot lights, and turn off all stoves , heaters, "electric motors" during use and until all vapors are gone." Don't think I'd be recomending this for a motor dip without someone signing a release first.
Dave before motor spray was called motor spray. Bolink Electrowirl was the way to go. We used it to clean motors. Brake cleaner on everything else.
You could'nt cut the comm on a stock motor, endbell was locked on. The Bolink cleaner worked great!!
ScudMissile 01-30-2007, 09:57 PM that was bel-ray
that was bel-ray
Thats it! Bel-ray.
yah but why? what does it do?
Cleans the motor bearings, com, brushes everything complete in 5-10 secounds in a motor bath.
Doesn't distort the com (arching) better brush seat to the com.
Used after a run but don't have time to cut the com.
1. run motor with a dremel under the bath for 5-10 secounds.
J-Dub Racing 01-30-2007, 11:20 PM I run mine for about 90 sec in the dip, and I dont use it for breaking in brushes. It is simply to clean the motor. If you are going to change your brushes and cut the comm every run the dip really doesnt do anything for you. Some say once you have a brush seated to the comm you should never remove it unless you are going to cut the comm and replace the brushes. Dip is great if you plan to use a brush more than 1 run. I run the race, come in take the motor out of the car, dip it for about 90 sec, spray the hell out of it with motor spray(Dip will kill the bushings if you run it to long), oil the bushings, and put it back in the car. I thought Jesse Bean was crazy when I saw this for the first time about a year ago, but I have been doing it for a few months now. With the VooDoo voltage, and the Crazy Blue Dip, my car has been nuts!! And thats all I have to say about that...
Thanks
Joel White
Alan Behler 01-31-2007, 08:28 AM i on the other hand dip my motors to break them in and run F brushes up to 10-15 times and will cut the motor after 5 runs or so. the other advantage of the dip is your motor will not heat up during break in. after the dip i spray my motor with spray while still running then put it back in my car.

prdquik 01-31-2007, 10:19 AM OK Guys (Alan & Joel) where do you buy the krazy blue dip you are talking about. Also is it the Bel Ray stuff mentioned above. Thanks Bob.
Alan Behler 01-31-2007, 10:30 AM actually i dont use the blue dip i use the safty clean stuff
jferland4 01-31-2007, 10:37 AM where can I get safty clean?
Alan Behler 01-31-2007, 10:47 AM ummmm. not sure
maybe an auto parts store
J-Dub Racing 01-31-2007, 10:57 AM What Alan said. I have actually never purchased it. But I think it came from advanced autoparts.
where can I get safety clean?
Try Google! I would imagine anywhere that sells parts cleaners,I've used water and denatured alcohol with good results, this is a very old trick,I've been doing this for at least 10 years now.
jferland4 01-31-2007, 11:00 AM Is that the actual name of it "safty clean". Cause I was trying to find some parts cleaner for this so I bought the stuff at autozone. It was VERY thick and it didnt clean of the motor or your hands or anything it got on. Is safty clean more clean up freindly?

it is thin like water and it stinks but it works good :)
prdquik 01-31-2007, 11:26 AM Safety Clean is the name of the manufacturer I believe. Here In So Cal. they distribute to buisneses. I don't think I have seen it on shelfs for sale to the public. Any body know where to buy the Bel Ray stuff and what its called?
martian 710 01-31-2007, 11:46 AM I think the product they are talking about is probably Safe-T-Solv.
so provides no real performance enhancement. seems to me someone saw a fast guy doing it now they are doing it.
Yes it does do a better job at seating in the brushes without having to put power to the motor as cleans the motor at the same time.
Keeps the segment between the poles on the com from distorting.
Cleans the bearings out so you must put a drop of oil after the motor
dries.
Also, is a better way to clean your motor without spraying motor cleaner on your hands and into the ground.

the stuff you got is concentrated you need to add kerosene to it to make it work
mr_meat68 01-31-2007, 12:27 PM whoever has a parts washer should have "safety kleen".
DIRTsportsman 01-31-2007, 12:32 PM Safety clean made by kleen flo i believe. I bought it in a five gallon pale
John Tag 01-31-2007, 12:34 PM Yup about $45 for 5 gallon pale at Advanced Auto parts..
Anytime72 01-31-2007, 01:53 PM Safety Kleen is made by Saftey Kleen. I have it in the shop. There under contract and come in and take the old stuff away and bring the new stuff. Comes in a 55 gallon drum. I dont think you can actually but it on the shelf, never had to so I don't know.
ta_man 01-31-2007, 02:06 PM I tried to buy some Safety Clean, even going so far as to contact the distributor for my area. It was not available in the quantity that I wanted for RC. Maybe if I was willing to buy a 55 gallon drum I could have got some. But anything like a gallon or a few gallons: no go.
mcRacing 01-31-2007, 02:57 PM you can get safety clean at any advance auto parts store but you can only buy it in 5 gal drums
Anytime72 01-31-2007, 04:48 PM He asked for motor dip not Wing Sauce you E mainer.

SOBEIT 01-31-2007, 05:11 PM mcRacing, they don't stock it in the three advance auto parts stores near me, nor do they list it on there website.
