I swapped out the exhaust valve in my 5.5 hp B&S (the stem had sheared off). This was my first time working on a small engine but I thought I got everything back together OK. New gaskets all around. New air filter. New spark plug.

But it's not starting. Not even close to it. I'm checking all the things brought up in other no-start threads but thought I'd ask if there's any common errors a novice like me might have made putting the engine back together.

Did you grind the valve to spec, or just slap a new one straight in?

check compression. if its weak... there is prolly a problem with the valve.

How was the valve seat when you had it off? Did you lap the new valve when you put it on?
