I just built a couple of packs for my X-5. The question is how do I insulate the positive and negative sides of the batteries from the carbon fiber belt tunnel?

I would recommend doing something like that to protect the battery from shorting and possibly damaging your electronics in some freak accident.

DOing things like that will never hurt.

Silicone- I've used it between the cells to hold the together and on the ends to insulate them also.
