View Full Version : Smallville / Justice
aurora fan 01-19-2007, 10:52 PM I've watched this show from the begining and can't tell you how often it lets me down. Yet, I continue to watch. Something about the way the story is being retold.
This latest episode showed us, united, for the first time, several of our DC favorites. I was so pleased with the result! What a great show!
I know they will just let me down again but I have to ask : How many others MfM regu;ar posters watch this campy, sometimes goofy, retelling of the Superman story? What are your thoughts?
I like it. It's getting edgier with time. The only episodes I didn't like were the ones when Lana was possessed by some witch from the past. The ep with Arthur Curry - great (in oh... so many ways Ms. Durance...)
John P 01-20-2007, 10:42 AM It's a REAL convoluted take on the whole mythos at this point.
They keep refusing to let Clark fly, they keep saying he'll never wear the costume. At this point, it's absurd to continue those two denials of the mythos.
What's Lois Lane doing living with the Kent family in Smallville? How in the hell is she going to be fooled by his "secret identity" when she practically grew up with him? And when does Lois become a hotshot reporter when it's her cousin who works there while she sluts around Smallville? And - she's OLDER than Clark!? :freak:
The 20-something Justice League is interesting but disturbing. "Impusle!?" Was "The Flash" copyrighted by someone other than DC/WB?!!? What's Cyborg, a Teen Titan, doing there? Green Arrow was actually fine, but - did we see him KILL a guard? Oliver Queen would never have done that.
It's also a bit odd to imagine Aquaman in Kansas. A bit far from home there, no? :)
Well, I still try to watch it when I remember to, but I'm forgetting more and more lately. It's been getting sillier and harder to take the radical departures from the DC heroes I know and love.
And, holy crap, Tom Welling would be SUCH a better Superman than Brandon Routhe was! And he's two years OLDER than Routhe! Put Tom in the damn costume already!!!
aurora fan 01-20-2007, 12:55 PM John Ha Ha I totaly agree on all your points! As for the Impulse name, they explained since he and Clark didn't come up with their own names they made up names for them. Notice Clark's code name is Boy Scout.
Anyway, so funny about Lois and Lana knowing young Clark. So funny about Kansas having a harbor or ocean access. So many funny, head scratching things. And the love triangles!! Oh, so terrible!
Still, watching the characters develop, is interesting and exasperating for me. There is something brilliant, yet stupid, going on. These writers seem to be blending cannon with their own mythos, and enough teen angst to make it the best and highest rated show on CW.
I wonder how long the series is intended to last and how it will leave off! Will the spin off be called Metropolis? Silly silly cool fun. I always laugh and smile when I watch this show!
spe130 01-20-2007, 03:40 PM John, they actually have the right name in place for Bart Allen - in the DCU, Bart is a 30th century descendant of Barry Allen who has the speed powers...and goes by the name Impulse (though I think he might currently be the Flash).
dreamer 01-20-2007, 04:56 PM I didn't watch the first two or three years, and a few people have told me I started when the thing was at it's best anyway (My first episode was Chris Reeve's first appearance).
For me the frustrations have been two:
a.) Clarke's constant betrayal of his friend Lex's trust and his cold shoulder to Lana's advances. He's determined that relationship is impossible - SO END IT! Damn, the same scene played out in every episode for how many years on end? I very quickly wanted to just slap him silly. Lex, for a long time, was the boy who wanted to do good and nobody trusted him, not even Clark. Clark taught him mistrust and secretiveness more than anyone else.
b.) the derivative nature of at least half the episodes. You're constantly seeing the other tv shows and movies that are being ripped off, usually not well or with no worthy twists. Quite a few episodes are cringeworthy.
Why do I keep watching? The main reason is Lex Luthor. Michael Rosenbaum is a revelation, and the take on a sympathetic Lex sliding into megalomania is both compelling and many times touching. That, I find, is the most daring conceit of the show: until the past season or two, "villain" Lex Luthor has been far more sympathetic than the nominal hero Clark Kent. I was thrilled at the speech Lex gave a couple of years ago, ending with "maybe I'm the hero of this story?", to the effect that if a "Superman" were to emerge with powers unchecked, someone would have to oppose him for the good of mankind. The exploration of Lex's point of view has been the backbone of the series, while Clark has been stuck in mope mode since the beginning. "Gosh I love Lana. It's for her own good I treat her like dirt. Why won't she give me yet another chance? Me so sad." Bleah.
The writing on this show gives me fits...there has been soooo much to criticize...but then, every now and then they pull off an episode that really works, like aurora fan said. I thoroughly enjoyed last Thursday's show. In general, I enjoy the twists they've given the mythos.
And it doesn't hurt that all the female leads are major babes.
woof359 01-21-2007, 10:29 AM I thought it started out good, just a few hints of whats was gonna be, they made a few changes i didnt side with 100% but the show was good and I cood forgive a few transgretions, then the hsow went down hill in yera 3 i think, freek of the week kinda thing. Too much sex, to beef cake and centerfolds, are there no plain people in Smallville.........the Grene Arrow has been cool, Augaman good, Flash.Wellllllllllllllllllllllllll and now Cyborg?
John P 01-21-2007, 10:58 AM If he still can't fly when the series ends, somebody needs a good slap! The hyper-speed running just looks stupid.
