I performed a "Y" splice in the speed control positive wire.
Now I have two red wires ends, does it matter which wire goes to
the positive side of the batt and the positive side of the motor?

nope it doesent mater wich end of the wire goes to what part of the car. either can go to the motor or the esc and it will power up just fine. you will be allright.
