Though it is probably not the correct term (stagger), how do you determine what stagger to run in your front tires?

Do you run front stagger?

Do you run reverse (larger diameter on the left) front stagger?

assuming one would adjust the ride height to compensate for a tire diameter change on either side of the chassis... how would one know he/she has the optimal stagger in front? In other words, how would I know if I have too much or not enough? What signifies a problem?
