I really think I watched too much of this creepy sort of thing when I was a kid. :p

PerfesserCoffee 01-08-2007, 03:39 PM Nearly 20 years later, when I finally got to see Underground Seattle, I was very disappointed that it was nothing like what was shown in this shot:

Griffworks 01-08-2007, 04:00 PM Those're kewel, Lee. Thanks for sharing. :)
Y'know, I've been to Seattle several times myself and always forget to try and make time to see Underground Seattle.

You've got to do it. The tour guide's history of the toilet is all crap (sorry  ) except, apparently, as it relates to Seattle and the necessity to raise the city in order to avoid tidal regurgitation in folks' faces upon pulling the plug on the old toilets.
The bottom most one or two stories of every building in Pioneer Square are now underground and the roadway was raised and filled in between two walls between the buildings so there are no "streets" down there--just the basements and sidewalks of the old Seattle and sewers of the new but still fascinating to explore on one of the regular tours.
It was a neat thing to see, especially after having seen Underground Atlanta years before (shortly before "Kolchak: The Night Strangler" came out).
BTW: That shot of the fictional Underground Seattle looks to be a matte painting superimposed over the sky and upper stories of actual buildings there in Pioneer Square. The underground portions of some of those buildings have the same street level appearances due to having been built (after one of the fires) with both the original street level and the new street levels in anticipation of the raising of the city. (Please correct me if anyone from the area or otherwise knows better on any of the details.)
gruffydd 01-08-2007, 05:30 PM Thanks for the Night Stalker stuff, always gives me a sense of joy.
Nova Designs 01-08-2007, 06:11 PM Man that brings back memories... that show have me serious nightmares when I was a kid. Great stuff. :)

My sister and I were watching this movie at home when we were about 10 and 11 years old, respectively, and decided to turn it to something else before the end when it just started to get really scary with the decomposing shots of Richard Anderson. It was years before I got to see how it ended. :p
Zombie_61 01-08-2007, 09:58 PM I really think I watched too much of this creepy sort of thing when I was a kid. :pThere is no such thing as too much of this! Still one of my all-time favorite shows, even some of the...uh..."lower budgeted" episodes. If Darren McGavin hadn't been so believable, it would never have worked. Thanks for the screen caps!
You have to thank such folks as:
Sir Graves Ghastly
Zacherly
Alfred Hitchcock
Rod Serling
Count Gore DeVol
and the tons of other late night/Saturday Afternoon TV film shows.
Even Lloyd Thaxtons Halloween shows were cool.
jheilman 01-09-2007, 12:33 AM Man I have been wanting to get Nightstalker for a while now. I just need to do it. I bought the set for my brother-in-law for Christmas '05 and really wanted to keep it. I have slight memories of the episodes as I haven't seen them since the original series run. I always love approaching a DVD set like that. Then it's like waves of nostalgia sweeping over you as you relive it. Love it!!

In fact, I think this box set got more respect from the studio than the show ever did; by the fourth episode you could tell they were already cutting back on the budget. McGavin's portrayal of Kolchak, however, was always top-notch and I think he took the series more seriously than anyone. And from what I've heard about his opinion of The X-Files being nothing more than a Night Stalker rip-off, I think he was the most protective as well.
jheilman 01-10-2007, 12:34 AM I think McGavin was being too harsh calling X-Files a rip-off. It certainly covered similar territory. It had a style all its own. I loved both shows.
PerfesserCoffee 01-10-2007, 09:14 AM I haven't gotten the series on DVD yet. I bought the two-movie set on impulse a few months ago when I saw it in the discount bin.
The movies I've always loved the best. I read the novels they were based on in high school and really got a kick out of them.
I saw a few of the regular series episodes a year or two ago when they were on one of the cable channels. They were thoroughly enjoyable despite the low budgets. I really liked the vampire pilot/premiere a lot--great stuff.
PerfesserCoffee 01-10-2007, 09:26 AM In The Night Stalker movie, there are some great shots of Carol Lynley (who, to my surprise, is only a few months younger than my mother and is in the neighborhood of 65 years old now) where she is looking very sweet and adorable. I'll try to snag some of those for y'all the next time I play the DVDs.
frankenstyrene 01-14-2007, 01:13 PM If I didn't own that DVD and you told me that was Oscar Goldman I'd tell you to lay off the crack. Impressive makeup, considering budget, etc...
Lloyd Collins 01-14-2007, 10:36 PM Sad to think, that I have had the Night Stalker box set for years, and have yet to watch it.
