EK, Nice:thumbsup:
CJ, what size and brand of batt are you using? Congrats on your track results. The only problem I had with the Duratrax stock rear tires was they wore out fast. Found the Proline's lasted longer.
Mames, Good tip, thanks.
cjtamu 12-01-2002, 03:45 PM Bill- They were Sanyo 2400 Nicads, matched cells, double-peaked them when charging. I also ran one heat with Peak 2400 Nicad stick pack to see if it made any difference. I've used these batteries with the Photon motor and never had any problem with run times. I can't imagine that the Core stock motor was putting that much draw on the battery, especially with the Deans and an ESC w/ low on resistance. I was over-geared a little to try to control the slip, so that may have been part of it. Some of it was probably related to the nut behind the transmitter steering wheel (i.e. driver error) because I haven't had this car on a track for about 4 months, and I was not very smooth.
I noticed the stock Duratrax pins wear fast (that's why I didn't have any to swap out), but I like the way they stay clean. This track is clay, and even the guys with square fuzzies or Ifmar pins were having trouble, just not to the extent I was. Does Proline make a similar pin?

Nope. I checked it out earlier in the year. They took it out to put in a golf course.
What part of SoCal are you in?
cj, Sounds like everything is set up right. Other than the nut on transmitter:lol:
I've just about given up on all 2400's of all the batts I've used they are the only size that has given me problems. I'm moving toward the GP 3300. very nice bat.
Yes, Proline makes pins in various styles. Tower shows you alot of them with information as well as Proline's web site. I should say I was very impressed with the Duratrax pins in all aspects except the wear.
Thanks for the info.

p.n.e. 12-01-2002, 06:49 PM Bill, we've been getting a very mild winter up here, all the snows melted and the grounds dry cept a small patch or two in the yard. As for plastic getting brittle, im not sure, i've driven it in -5 celcius (sp?) and didnt have any problems with plastic snapping. the shocks however were a different story, the oil got way too thick and i busted one of the shocks jumping a small pile of snow and most of the oil leaked. i think i kinda bent the piston a little, but its fixed now and filled with vegetable oil (what can i do..the parents still wont drive me to the lhs)
cjtamu 12-01-2002, 07:18 PM Bill- I'm with you on the batteries. I'm going to go to 3000 nimh batteries in the near future. Looks like technology has caught up and they give you as much punch as nicads, more run time, and no discharging. I won't miss that. Can't go to 3300's until they make them ROAR legal.
2nd Gear 12-01-2002, 09:01 PM Bill-When it comes to the temp. that the parts break,I'd go on a linb and say anything under 35deg.F youd better watch what ya hit.(this is from my own personal experience with my mainly all original poopy plastic truck)DTX rear tires.I like the "straightline" traction they give. But when it comes to turns they feel way to loose (stock wheels and foam inserts) and dont have enough sidebite. And when you get those GP3300's in your truck you better hit the restroom b4 you run it after a full peak.Cause you will once you hit the throttle:thumbsup:
One other tip I learned last racing season. What ever shock fuild your planing on using go 5 under what "you" feel is the best. The shock fluid thickens as it is chilled.I used 25wt.in front and 27 1/2 for the rear in all my vehicles last season. It isnt freezing "most" of the time in the building we run at but it does get cold.Ive seen some guys running 15wt in their trucks and they were working very well and not even bottoming out.Thought Id add this for ya'll.But veggy oil is a smart idea when your limited to what you can do.I know Ive read places where people used mollasses for shock fuild??

ahh thats too bad, im in LB JB, was out at the HB SoCal raceway earlier today just checking it out, thats a pretty nice track. Would like to do some test runs out there, luckily there are some good open fields where I live, will pack up the stuff and head out there for a few hours to play.
I have a question for some of the pros in the bunch, yesterday i broke my servo saver, put a new one on this morning, seems that the car doesnt want to turn to the left all the easily anymore, actually after it gets to center position feels like it sticks or drags a lil bit before i can turn it to the left? i put the new servo saver on as straight up and down as i could get it, did i do this wrong?
turning right seems normal and fast as usual no drag or binding at all.
Thanks!

Sounds to me that when you put the servo saver on you didnt center your servo back out with the trim on your transmitter.

Thanks for the reply 2nd Gear, no that was the first thing i did was recenter the servo, took it apart a lil while ago, and found the cause of my problems, one of the brass bushings on the chassis side was not completely inserted, popped that lil sucker in and was as good as new.
also put in a new slipper plate at the same time, this things is rawkin now.
kitty 12-02-2002, 02:27 AM mmonti - welcome to the club! I mean that in multiple ways... glad to see another happy Evader owner on board and you're not the first to break something soon after putting your truck on the ground. Major props to you for reading all of the pages in this thread, too! p.n.e. already suggested getting a set of Jep's braces, so I'll add one more cheap upgrade that seems to help my truck a lot - a XXT front bumper/skid. The Evader "bumper" is more just a skid. The XXT unit will fit right on. After tweaking a few kingpins, I'm planning on upgrading to a titanium set next, so that might be something to put on your list. There is no bumper that will protect the entire front end; the Evader is a stadium truck and it's meant to have wider front arms. It's great for cornering, but does leave it open to arm breakage when you smack curbs and stop signs. Really, though, no vehicle can tolerate that much punishment without breaking something. It's just one of those things we have to bear. It's always good to keep a spare set of front suspension arms around, just in case.
cj - congrats!!! Bummer on the battery dumping, though. Do you cycle them? Do you think maybe Dirt Hawg IIs would grip okay on that track?
EK - glad to see you're able to post pics now. They show up a bit small on my screen, but it was enough to make me say "ouch" on the Evader chassis snappage. Nice TC3, though =)
JB - they took away a perfectly good RC track to build a golf course?! That's sacrilege!
cjtamu 12-02-2002, 12:44 PM Kitty- Yeah, the packs have been cycled. I think maybe it was just a combination of things, not the least of which was me being real punchy with the driving. I took the motor out and cleaned it yesterday, and the diff still feels real smooth. Haven't taken it apart yet because I'm waiting for USPS to get me my new slipper assembly so I can do everything at once. I'll try again in a few weeks when I have time to get in some practice and get the setup right. Thay have some very good drivers at this track. The 4wd mods are something to see.
Happy Monday.. (yeah right)
Bumpers: i bought a wide bumper that was for a street car and after dremeling some holes in it i scewed it on nice and snug. the arms almost rest on the bumper so it acts more like a skit plate but one that extends all the way across my front end. it seems to work well..
Batteries: how much are we talking for the new GP3300's or the 3000 nimh's. i've been using 2400 Vmaxx sticks for 3 months and i think i'm ready to get some matched packs. i got a new 13T Jaguar and dropped it in my Pede and although it was significantly faster i just expected a little more punch. run time suffered too.
picking up a 8T for the evader today.. i'll be sure to use the bathroom before i try it out. :D
Stock Evader shocks: i've been happy with the shocks, just a pain to bleed.
EK: nice pics man.. if you want any help making them larger and still able to post them just let me know.. i'm a graphic designer and photoshop and i are on a first name basis.. ;)
pne: still havent had time to hook up the lights.. i too was going to go for a ground effect look instead of aiming them out the wheels but we'll see. thanks for the tip on cutting the wires nice and snug..
Q,
I picked up a 6 cell stick pack of the Trinity Vis-powered GP 3300 mAh batteries at the hobby shop for $52.99 plus tax.
B
Thanks Bill,
i have a $40 Gift Cert for the lhs and i think batts is the best place to invest that.
and i got an extra $32 check today too..
2nd Gear 12-02-2002, 04:33 PM One thing to add about GP3300 cells. You can add to your order for them to assemble the packs for you.For 6 bucks it is well worth it taking the cost of bars into the equation. www.promatchracing.com
cjtamu-I just got my 4WD this year.Itsa XX4 that I got from a very well known racer at my local track. His name is Dell he is the owner of BigBlockMotors. He winds them himself and has them balanced by Orion from what Im told.(I dont ask him about his secrets ;) )He makes all kinds of mods AND stocks too.He told me to get into 4wheel last season and I cant understand what made me wait so long.Stadium trucks are boring when it comes to 4wheel.I still feel that 2wd buggies are more fun then stadium trucks as well,2WD is way more challenging then truck any day.
Good point 2nd..
i'll look into that.. thanks for the web address
as for 4WD from your descrption i dont think i want to try it.. i'll never want to drive my 2WD vehicles again.

Q Man when you feel like the 2WD isnt doin it for ya,Go 4WD.You wont regret it.
thats fair..
i think my next step will be an Emaxx..
but that'll be awhile.. right now i'm having too much fun testing the limits of my Evader and Stampede.. i'm not happy until i leave rubber strips on the road. :D
p.n.e. 12-02-2002, 07:49 PM that is definatly fun, until you realize your tires are bald :D
No doubt.
almost went for an 8turn today.. going for better batteries over faster motor tho.. for now at least..
13turn should keep me busy for a few weeks at least :D

I live in Anaheim Hills. SoCal Raceway's a pretty nice place. The closest track to me is at my lhs, but it's just onroad, and they only set it up twice a month (it's a parking lot race). I get out to SoCal RC when I have the chance. Excellent track. The people are very nice compared to my lhs (ultimate hobbies), but the prices are higher. It's about an hour drive from my house, but I stay at my grandma's house a lot when I have a day off from school, and It's only about 25 minutes from her house.

good choice, wish i was smart enuff to do that :hat:
13turn stampede and a 17turn evader side by side ready to race. a controller in each hand and using my thumbs to steer i raced the two trucks down the street last night and was VERY surprised to see them run almost neck and neck.
i can only imagine how the evader would run with the 13T in it..
hey pne, i put the night prowler light bar in the evader with the subaru body and it was pretty awesome looking streaking down the road. i'll try to take pictures tonight.
p.n.e. 12-03-2002, 02:54 PM i hardly even touch my leds anymore, they are more for show and i dont want to break them bashing. maybe i'll just trade them in the b/s forum
i agree.. i've got more lights now than i ever planned on hooking up. the prowler is cool cause its protected under the body plus two screws and i can remove it.
i've got 3 wheel kits, 3 headlight/taillight kits, AND the prowler.
oh and three voltage regulators.. when it all arived i was like
A word to the wise....
If you are the owner of the Evader ST or BX and you do not have the Jep_RC front brace on your truck or buggy your playing with fire.
I was driving on a new track and was coming out of a sweeping 90 degree turn when I lost it and my ST T-boned a steel pole. Broke the front bumper and bent the brace but the truck is fine and finished the race.
I'm confident that if I did not have the brace installed I would be looking at a new front end.
Thanks Jep:thumbsup:
Dan the Man 12-04-2002, 01:14 AM Now think about that in regards to your track design...
Already been addressed. That pole will not try and kill any truck ever again.

Your welcome! Thanks for the plug. It is nice to hear success stories, as I did design the brace set to be "functional", not necessarily pretty.

BTW - I am back from vacation now (physically, if not mentally).

With a name like Smuckers it has to be good!
Hey Jeff,
i just realized that i never got around to acquiring one of your brace sets..
how much we talk'n about for a set and shipping to Tacoma, Wa.
thanks
Q
i should add that i busted my front brace a week ago and im sure it could have been avoided if i would have had your brace on it. didnt hit that pole THAT hard.. i've been running my truck without a front brace ever since.
i could really use it this weekend but my lack of forward planning i'm sure will prohibit that.
anyways, let me know jeff and i'll get a money order in the mail.. possibly today..
thanks

jep_rc 12-04-2002, 02:38 PM Hi Q2K,
Send me an email on the brace set and we will work out a price. I am down to 4 sets left right now. I am ordering another 50 or 100 sets next week. My email is jeprc@sio.midco.net
Jep
p.n.e. 12-04-2002, 11:36 PM hey jep whatever happened to that flexible bumper you were making?
plus, i took some pics of the evader with the webcam and heres a link
http://www.angelfire.com/ne2/pneboy/evader.html
mmonti 12-05-2002, 01:50 AM p.n.e are those lights custom made or from a kit?
Id like to put some head and tail lights on my evader, any ideas from anyone on wiring the tail lights up to the esc for braking? I figured id just run the lights from a seperate 9volt battery possibly, leds will run along time on a 9volt.
p.n.e. 12-05-2002, 01:55 AM they were made by a guy on the net for me. i can give you his email but he's closing up shop for the holidays. you can find them just about anywhere on the net tho. what esc do you have?
mmonti 12-05-2002, 02:24 AM my evader is all stock, just got it a few days ago, im pretty good with a soldering iron and electronics so putting a light harness together wouldnt be difficult. just curious as to how i could interface that with the esc.
Thanks
Jester_yj 12-05-2002, 08:01 AM and where exactly did you get those paddles/chains, or did you make them(and with what)?
cjtamu 12-05-2002, 12:28 PM mmonti- Don't think you can wire the brake lights to the stock ESC. Novak makes several that are equipped with brake light circuitry (Super Rooster reversible and Fusion forward only) I know for sure.
CJ is right. from what i've heard the stock Sprint ESC cant easily be used to run brake lights. i just got a Super Rooster that has two wires ready for hookup.
pne, i wanna know whats with the chains buddy.. those look awesome. the lights look good too. were you suprised at how bright they were? i have my ultimate prowler here at work so i can snap some pictures. hopefully i'll get a chance to post them today. the thing looks like a xmas tree flying down the road at night.. or maybe more like R2D2 with a few sets of PIAA's
Dan the Man 12-05-2002, 12:57 PM Pro-Line and Panther sell paddle tires if you need them... Pro-line also makes some tires with HUGE spikes that might be good in snow.
p.n.e. 12-05-2002, 02:34 PM thx Q, the chains i made myself from some chain at home depot, i'll take some more pics with the paddles off so you can see them better. the paddles were just made cuz i was bored, i took a old piece of aluminum evesdropping and cut it the width of the tire, then i made folds in it and wrapped it around the tires. they dont work as well as i hoped in deep snow, the truck cant get the power to the wheels :(
yes i was quite surprised at how bright the lights were but i cant get them aligned right on the body. i'll try to dig you up a link for the chain instructions, its cheap and makes the truck look really mean :dude:

theres an article at teamrcv.com on making chains for your tires
http://teamrcv.com/article.php?sid=41
excellent article, if we ever have a freak snow storm down here, ill put a set together
mmonti 12-06-2002, 01:34 AM does anyone know what the specific sizes of the evader hex bolts are? sae or metric? and also the nuts on the wheels and shocks? and is it pretty much standard sizes across all manufacturers?
