View Full Version : Who should i choose ??????
I have the choice of a Kohler Command OHV 20 HP Horizontal or
Briggs and Stratton Vanguard 18 HP vertical.
I dont know what to choose because i will do a powerful off-road go-kart.
The Kohler for the torque but he is heavy.
Or the Briggs that gives good performance but less than than the Kohler and
are more light
but less performance than the Kohler. And i will have to convert it into a
Horizontal.
The price for the Kohler is 1000$ canadian
And for the Briggs it's 700$ canadian
I want to know who is the best for the performance and money
Thanks

Do you know what is a torque converter
Because that can make the engine power groes by the double
My uncle made one with a 13 HP honda with a torque converter his off-road go-kart can make 70 KPH
madmanmoose 12-20-2006, 07:43 PM me and my friends builts a cuple of them we have found that 2 cycle motorcycle engines are better for them cause when we go off roadin we dont care how steep or what angle or how wet we get them we always make it home and when you pop the clutch pure power to the rear wheels. most 4 cycle engines just dont stand up to the abuse we put our buggys threw.
just remeber you can as much fun building them as you can usin them

I agree with madman, find a good used 2 cycle dirtbike engine and trans, eBay! is a good place to look, something 125cc or larger. You will def get the most bang for your buck. Not sure what the exchange rate is but I'm sure you can get one for under $700 U.S. Good luck, let us know what you build, how it works, and all that good stuff. I've got a dirtbike sitting here that I plan to scavenge the engine off of for a kart. You might get lucky and find something off an ATV with reverse.
If i can i will put some picture
oncewaslost1982 12-22-2006, 05:45 PM i would go with an old vw engine and tranny depending on how big this buggy is going to be.
ZukiJon 12-22-2006, 08:25 PM If your going with an old vw engine, you might as well buy a dune buggy frame kit, you can get them for under $1000 cut, bent, all that good stuff, then weld them together, if your going to build something yourself just for fun, throw a dirtbike engine on an old go-cart, can't get any more fun than that
But i dont want to make it so big i want to make one like those
off-road go-kart (http://www.ubuilditplans.com/SII.html)
off road kart (http://www.edge.au.com/)
ZukiJon 12-26-2006, 05:13 PM You'd probably nave more fun with one of those if you put a dirtbike engine and trans on it. If you go with the Kohler or the Briggs you will have to fork out another few hundred bucks for a torque converter, that is if you want the most out of the engine, dirt bike trans will allow you to select your gear, and if you find an atv, could build one with reverse.
Yeah i hnow but im in canada and were i am i don't know were to go buy an used engine because new it will cost me arround 2000 $ or more. And if something break it will be expensive to buy some parts and tought to find were i can buy some. But with the other kind i can find some everywere. I have a few little engine store. Because yes if i can i will take one of a bike, atv or something like that.
Agree with what ????????????????
