I want to know if we can convert an vertical engine into a horizontal by changing some parts on the engine and this will be on a Briggs and Stratton Vanguard 18 HP........without having to do a gearbox.

Thank you

3 options:

Free-----Broken-----could be able to fix it

100-200----used-----may break

200-800----brand spankin new-----will last for a while if taken care of.

What type of carb does it have? If it is a float type you're not going to be able to tip the engine 90 degrees. I'm afraid it is a float type.

Its not really worth it.... you'd be better off (if you need 18hp??) find a old briggs horizontal apposed twin engine....

Just curious, has anyone ever actually seen a vertical converted to a horizontal? I know it's not very practical, at least it doesn't seem to me, but will it actually work? If anybody has ever done it or seen it done, how well did it work out? I've seen the question asked many times, just sparked some curiosity in me I guess. Thanks.

Just wondering how the oiling system would get oil to the rod, piston and bearings. In my thoughts its impossible. Of course Ive been wrong many many times.

Oil slinger off a horizontal engine might work

for one thing the carburator and intake will be turned wrong, what are you going to do with it ?

I've heard people say that they've done it, but never asked how. The only things that I can think of that would be problems would be the carb, and oiling. Wouldn't be hard to fix the carb prob, getting the oil to the vital parts would though. I'm sure there are people who have attempted this or have seen it attempted, just wanted to know how it turned out.
