I took apart a HW '70 Plymouth SuperBird and trying to remove the Black paint from the roof w/Lacquer Thinner or Nail Polish remover is not helping! I want to expose the original paint under the Black roof, WITHOUT removing the original paint. Know of any solvents besides Lacquer Thinner that would help?

Lacquer thinner didn't work?
I'm surprised.
That solvent is about as aggressive as I'd dare to go,while preserving the integrety of the finish below.(on anything other than a dollar car)

Acetone has a lower flash point and Naptha lower still,so if Lacquer thinner won't touch it,chances are they won't either..

If those don't work, try M.E.K. (methyl ethyl keytone) found in the paint section of any home improvement store.

MEK can be very aggressive,so use a (moist, not wet)dab on a q-tip, on a small spot, then wipe it off- fast.
After removing the "vinyl" It will dull the underlying finish but automotive polish and wax should restore it.

When in doubt use a guinee car with the same kind of top (HW Cougar comes to mind)

doh!

It would help, if I completely read your post ,before typing out my a$$.:freak:

Try acetone,it evaporates fast and should be aggressive enough, just don't get it too wet,or leave it on too long.
