I looked at Rotten Tomatoes before going to see it (where the reviews weren't too good) and was therefore not expecting much. I thought it was great. It's no Lord of the Rings, but I believe it was better than "Narnia". The only thing I thought it lacked was eragon's learning or growing stage. It's one of the things that makes this style of movie pace better (such as "highlander"). Just my 2 bob.

It's at 11 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Not a good sign. Of course, I haven't seen it, but usually 11 percent is bad news.

Stay away. This film is so bad it's more or less satanic.

You have been warned.

Today's Washington Post review starts off with:
It may be worth the eight and a half bucks you have to pay the makers of "Eragon" just to hear the great English actor Jeremy Irons say the line, "Before you can cast a spell, you must learn the magic language of the elves."

The review ends with,
"Too bad the acting is so lame, the story so derivative and the thing so long. "

Doesn't look like this will be on my "must see" list this Christmas.

I remember years ago seeing Jeremy Irons on a talk show where he said his approach to movies is that if he likes the material, he'll agree to do it. Then he and the producers can figure out how much they can pay him.

Considering he now has this and DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS on his resume, can we assume he's changed his approach?

Short. Concise. To the point.

Anyone seen the trailer about the Native Americans and the Frazetta-like "Vikings"? Don't remember the name of it.

My favorite Eragon review thus far has come from the father of an eleven-year-old boy who had the misfortune of accompanying his son to a preview screening. The boy, a huge fan of the book(s), was so disappointed by the movie he actually wept.

Twentieth Century Fox has the best marketing department in town, but any film that reduces its target audience to tears poses a daunting challenge indeed.

Stop hitting your sister and go clean up your room, or I swear I will take you right out to see Eragon!

Yes, yes, all jokes aside.... It is not for adults, but it's not that bad. I haven't read the book and some things could have been done better, but I still say it's better than "Narnia" - which didn't know if it was for adults or kids.

I've often had a better time at movies with bad reviews, not having high expectations.

That said it seems Eragon isn't all bad. Here's SFO Chronicle's review (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/12/15/DDGNRMVNRV1.DTL&type=movies). RT is at 16%. Almost one in 5 reviews 'liked' it.

Haven't seen it. Probably won't (not my cuppa). But 'Satanically bad'? What other movies deserve that epitaph, Carson? Just so I can put things in perspective. Or maybe avoid certain trans-pacific flights...

Errorgone?

All of these are trying to copy the success of LotR, just like all the stuff that copied Star wars.

Saw it today. Not bad, after awhile the Star Wars simularities started to be too much. Betrayal of the old order by one of their own, farm boy thrust into a titantic struggle, being mentored by an old knight, damsel in distress and so on and so on. Even the rogue thrown in for good measure. Oh well, Star Wars is hardly original considering the Arthur legend. All in all, still an enjoyable way to spend a little time and money.

My 2 cents

Movie or no Movie...the level of writing of the books is supurb, even more so when you consider the age of the writer.

Dang, Carson! From what I've observed of your reviews in the past and my usual agreement with them, I'll be staying away from this one if you say it's that bad.

heh.

my beer buddy, Vince, and I queued up to see a movie. I wanted to see 'The Good Shepherd' (already been to Bond). Vince likes dragons. Guess what?

OK it wasn't bad. Wasn't good. It was rather like a 15 year old wrote a story after seeing Star Wars that had dragons in it. I understand that a 15 year old DID write the story.

The princess was nice. Only other woman in the movie was the rebel leader's daughter (very saucy but just a bit part). I think. Oh yeah, the dragon was voiced (telepathically) by Rachel Weisz (methinks SHE should have been the princess except she's 16 years senior to Eragon but hey, the princess is 6 years older). Not enough womens in this flick.

Eragon (Luke) was OK, if a bit too blond. But so was Luke.

The role of Obiwan was played well by Jeremy Irons. I didn't even giggle when he said you had to 'speak the language of elves to do magic'.

The evil emperor, played by John Malkovich, seemed like he was on Quaalude or something. yawn.

Darth Durza was fine.

The parts of r2d2 and c3po were played by the Dragon I guess. Well so were the parts of the x wings. The baby dragon was rather disneyish. The older dragon was, well even voiced by Rachel Weisz, rather shrill. Something very Freudian there what with Eragon riding her around and all. I dunno.

I'd say it's worth viewing on HBO if there's nothing else on. It helps if you're pre-pubescent. I wanna dragon!
