well it realy matters what you are looking to do with the truck. boath are very nice trucks. the T-maxx is rc's monster king right now. Its a tough dependabel truck that will last you many years of service if you treat it right. (but this comes at a large cost to you wallet) the pede is very nice also it is more like a jacked up 1/10th scale stadium truck realy. it uses standard size 10th scale truck tires and so on. but if you dont car if it is 2wd vs. 4wd then you may also want to look into the sport maxx or the S-maxx I was looking at one back when my friends where thinking about racing monster class and I just wanted something cheap to get my going. but thats just my $0.02
HOPE THIS HELPS

If there is a track near you i would mabye consider buying whatever they race. Unless ofcoarse its onroad as it seems you want a more versitile vehicle. Any way look at wat your local racers run because although you may not want to race right now you may evenually.
Anyway i have a nitro rustler which is very similar to the stampede and it seems to be bullet proof. The only problem with it was the ez start. It would only work a few times before having to be cleaned. Other then that it was good. My personal opion is if you like the t maxx and its within your budget then go for it.

if you are getting a maxx, get a new one, with the grey bulkheads, the older ones were real weak, if ya looked at em wrong, they would break !! the savage is a really strong truck, i raced a few of those for years, never really broke any major parts, the new savage x looks cool too, real easy to work on i hear !!
