View Full Version : Painting question??????
win43 12-05-2006, 07:12 PM Hi evereyone,
I recently bought some of the kits from MEV's. I am a real novice at painting or customizing. A friend told me to put the can of spray paint (Testor's spray enamel) near the heater ducts to warm it before I spray the body. Is this a good idea?? Also, do I have to prep the body in any way before spraying it?
Thanks,
Jerry
P.S. Where can I get waterslide decals??
Win43,
I use warm water in a plastic container, and let the can sit in the water to warm up for a bit. I think the heater would be a bit too warm, not to mention potentially dangerous with combustibles. Do several light coats about 10 mins apart, then a wet coat. With enamel, let it dry for several days to a week before you handle it and do further details.

Mike(^RacerX^) 12-05-2006, 10:52 PM Yeah,what Sped said......
Warm water works good for rattle cans. The paint seems to flow a bit better.
Also doesnt hurt to heat up the piece you are going to paint a wee bit.
I use a blow dryer. But BE CAREFUL OR YOU'LL MELT THE PIECE!!!!!!
I only in the last few years got a really decent air brush and compressor set up.
So I got pretty good with spray cans.Used them long enough.
Ive even pulled off some awesome poly finishes on guitars, which is VERY hard to do with spray cans.

T-jetjim 12-06-2006, 08:00 AM Just to add to the above. Make sure you wash the bodies with warm soapy water, rinse well and dry. I did not wash off one car and the paint pealed off with tape when I did a stripe. I did primer the MEV kits I got with one coat.

41-willys 12-06-2006, 04:36 PM What is a MEV kit?
roadrner 12-06-2006, 04:39 PM Kits produced by Mike E. Vitale. Some great looking and unique TJet style bodies on (I believe) original NOS Aurora TJet chassis. Little pricey, but very detailed too. rr
zanza 12-06-2006, 06:15 PM MEV was the only one who has produced a 67/68 Mustang and hopefully a purple one which mimic mostly my late 1:1 car

tjd241 12-07-2006, 08:13 AM I've been using the Tamiya paints. I really like them so far. I used the military colors years ago for modeling, but have found the more car-like colors very user friendly. Gotta go light coats though.... regardless of brand. It's a MUST. As far as warming goes, YES. I never did the warm water bath trick, but depending on where or how you have your paints stored, it is advisable to at least have them indoors at room temp when you have at it (basements can be cold). I'd also say NO to the baseboard heater method. Those can get VERY hot. Dawn soap is the way to go too. They use that stuff to wash up seabirds and seals that get caught in oil spills!!
