i have a 1994 ford explorer, and the headlights are the worst thing on the truck. i put in a set of kc hilights (55watt) driving lights and they are brighter than the original head lights. i was looking into putting better bulbs in the actual headlights, but don't know what to put in, what type bulbs should i put in, how high of watt?

Are they sealed beams or replaceable bulbs?

If the reflector is in good shape then a decent upgrade bulb is the Silvania bulbs. Not sure of the "name" of them but they do make an upgrade bulb.

Yep, there you go. Didn't know they made all of those versions. The ones I was thinking about were the Silverstars.

You cant beat Silverstars.
Are your headlight lenses yellowing or dull like most Ford are from the 80s and 90s? If they are get one of those headlight resto kits they sell at most chain parts stores to polish them up, they work wonders.
And dont go up in wattage, the higher the wattage bulb the more heat at the connecters, its pretty common to see the plugs melt on the back of the headlights with the high watt bulbs, and not a cheap fix in some cases.

I run the silver stars in both my and my wifes car. Accually in hers the factory bulbs did'nt make it past 2 weks after we bought it in 02 as an 02. The kits someone refered to are from permatex. They are called (if I rememebr right) Polycarbonite lens restoration kits. I have used the permatex kits on my 96 subaru headlights and for just over 20 bucks and an hr per lens, I saved a boat load of money. One trick I did was to use each grit of sandpaper top to bottom and right to left. The directions say alternate direction of sanding with each grit. As in 600 grit top to botom 1000 grit left to right and so on. Once I was done I found DOT numbers I could not see.

Also sylvania is making silverstar ultra bulbs now. These are suspossed to be even brighter than the original silverstars.

Sliverstars are awesome, I had them in my old Buick, never had to use my brights. Gonna get a set of those or have them converted to HID in my Malibu for 150 bucks. Great investment and a nice look too.

My first Explorer was a 92. I replaced the headlight covers in 99 because they had lost their "clearness" due to many things. Upgraded bulbs as well and it seemed that the beam distance doubled on both high and low beams. When I gave it to one of the my neighbor's kid in 02, he replaced the bulbs with ones that would light up the sky or blind you if you were heading towards him. Knew I should have donated that car. He's still driving that thing and has basically rebuilt it to where it still looks new. He uses it now as his winter vehicle while he pokes around in the other months in some Z Nissan car. rr

Ive converted the Headlights and Foglights on my truck to HID, now thats a change!
Stay below 6k after that the colors get deeper blue and the light is less.
We did my neighbors Suburban with a 2k kit, they are yellow in color but you can see forever!
You can get good HID kits on the bay for less than $100 now, good upgrade.
