View Full Version : Dash Galaxies comparison

I finally got around to picking up a couple of Dash Motorsports Galaxies, and these things are SCHWEET. I figured I'd post some pics of one along with an original Galaxie for comparison, and I made some surprising discoveries...

Original Aurora Galaxie:

Dash Motorsports Galaxie:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/rwurtz/images/galaxies04b.jpg

That's a resin driver figure from Weird Jack in the Dash car. He's not glued in yet, he's just there for show... also, the original is wearing Jack's thin Tjet tires, while the Dash car has Jack's standard Tjet tires. I Dremeled out the insides of the wheelwells to get the wider tires to fit... the Dash car has enough meat on it to thin that area a little and still keep the lines of the wheelwell intact.

From looking at pictures on the web, I had been under the impression that these Galaxies would be exact copies of the Auroras... that somehow a mold was made from an original Galaxie. I guess that idea sticks in my head from having many resin cast copies of existing cars. This is not the case here. From my limited knowledge of how this stuff works, it looks like an original Aurora Galaxie was fed into a CAD/CAM program, and actually cleaned up and improved slightly in the manufacturing process. The overall modeling style and "flavor" of the Aurora car is retained very well, so much so that if you didn't know what to look for, I think you'd be hard pressed to pick out differences in the Dash car without having an original to look at. Starting with the front view, the grille and bumper are very close but not exact:

You can see the slight difference in shape better on an angle:

The top corners of the grille/bumper piece are a little squarer on the Dash car, and the lip across the top is less pronounced. I don't think this detracts from the car at all. I don't know if the Dash pieces will fit as replacements for the original without modifications, but it seems they certainly would require only minor if any tweaking.

What struck me as more interesting is the fact that the Dash car is actually a much cleaner mold. Look at the cowl vents in front of the windshield. On the Aurora car, these show some imperfections. I thought this was because my car had been damaged over the years, but then I compared it with a beater original I have and the imperfections are exactly the same. The Dash car's cowl vent is perfect. The curve at the base of the windshield is SLIGHTLY different too, but as you'll see later, the two cars can still swap windshields...

Check out a rear view:

Again, the shape of the bumpers isn't exact, but it's hard to tell when they're not side by side. Check out the length of the trunk lid too... the Aurora's is slightly longer. And again, the Dash is a cleaner mold... dunno if you can see it here, but the trunk lid line on the Aurora car looks like it was carved by hand, and gets a little thinner in spots... like before, my other original reference car has the same imperfections, and the Dash car doesn't.

Look at the top view:

Both cars are sitting on original Tjet chassis here, with guide pins attached... seems like the Dash car sits a little further back on the chassis. Also, the door handles are further forward, and you can see the shape of the convertible boot is slightly different.

Speaking of slightly different...

I compared hardtops too; this is the beater car I referred to earlier next to the Dash hardtop.

Though it gives me the willies to carve on original Aurora plastic, this thing was pretty beat, so when I started thinking an all-black Galaxie would look way cool, I didn't feel too bad gently removing the roof...

Cool, huh? Note that some Dash cars come with a black roof, so you can do this yourself without hacking on an original car.

Just so nobody accuses me of performing sacrilege on an original Tjet, this is what the underside of the beater looks like. Note the wheelwells and screwposts. That's the way I got it...

A quick shout-out to Andrew at slots-n-stuff, where I got these. Great guy to deal with and he loves the hobby like the rest of us...

And a message to Dash, if you're reading... please keep producing great affordable bodies like this, and we'll keep buying! You can bet I'll be waiting for the GTO, Olds 442, and Road Runner you listed as future projects on your site...

(hey, any thoughts about doing a Buick Skylark or Gran Sport? :D )

I must be a tad younger cos the Dash car I'm really waiting on is the McLaren F1 road car (and the new in-line chassis).

I just wish the hardtops had better paint. Seeing the mold marks through the paint is very disappointing to me, and I'm one Dash's biggest fans. I always buy two everything Dan sells

I really liked the write up --rick. The comparision of the Dash Galaxie to Aurora Galaxie was well written and the pictures are excellent!
However, I do have one beef with you.
I don't even cut screw posts that short...
What are you trying to do, ruin my lowering legacy?

Blasphemy! Lower than the Sultan of Slammed?!? That's unheard of!

However, now that you mention it, I was thinking about making that Galaxie into an ultra-mega-way-cool-rocker-dragging lowrider...

It's really cool how great the body looks lowered like that...
But what happens when you put the gearplate back in? :jest:

Great review Rick. Thanks.

I too am very impressed with the stuff Dash Motorsports is doing for us...and I really am enjoying the pace at which new stuff is coming out. I really hope things can continue just as they have been with Dash.

Gearplate?

Hey, oh, yeah, the gearplate...

Gee, maybe that's why I can't get this thing to run...
