I have a Craftsman 5 hp push mower, just wondering if Sears made the engine or another company. The model number of the engine is 143.965004 and the D.O.M. number is 6128 1B. I don't see anything identifying it as B&S or Tecumseh or anything, just curious.

Your engine is made by Tecumseh. If you look it up at the Sears parts site, all the part numbers are Tecumseh part numbers that can be purchased at any Tecumseh dealer or Sears if you choose.

The numbers that appear before the "." are the prefix and that will tell you who the manufacture is. Someone posted this link before that has a list of most of the prefixes craftsman/sears uses

Should there be a Tecumseh model number on the engine somewhere or do they only have the Sears model number? Was also wondering if Tecumseh makes Kawasaki engines. Was wandering because I have a Kawasaki 5 hp on a pressure washer and Tecumseh 5 hp on a tiller, both are horizontal shaft engines and they look almost identical.

Sears/Craftsman buys and administers the warranty on the Tecumseh engines installed on Craftsman products. If you want to know the actual Tecumseh model of engine, a Tecumseh service dealer should be able to cross ref. the Craftsman number over to the Tecumseh number.


And no, Tecumseh does not make Kawasaki (but God help us if they did)
