Lefthander R/C Hawkeye Classic
Race number 2 of the BRL/BSR Racing Tires Brushless Oval Tour would see drivers from 10 different states make the trip to the sleepy little town of Vinton Iowa for the Lefthander R/C Hawkeye Classic. Long know as one of the hot spots for oval racing the IROAR club and its members have built a reputation for putting of the biggest and best events in the Midwest. This year race did not disappoint.
13.5 Sportsman Stock
Competition in the Sportsman Stock class was tougher then ever with nearly 40 drivers entered. Phil Beardshear of Chalco, NE in his orange #34 BSR/Hefty Cells/ Lefthander R/C/ Protoform Charger emerged early as the driver to beat. Phil consistently upped the track record in every round securing the TQ and cashing his ticket to the Big Money Novak All Star Challenge at the end of the season. Knoxville, Il driver and World Class Batteries Owner Tony Mitchell would qualify second followed by Madison, WI pilot Pat Simpkins in third, Iowa’s Danny White in fourth and Bob Williams form Bellevillie, IL in fifth.
These drivers would take part in the 25 lap Fast 5 dash to determine starting position for the A feature. Up front the dash was fairly uneventful with Beardshear checking out form the tone. Bob Williams starting from the back row made the biggest move improving to third position allowing him to start inside row 2 for the feature.
The stage was set for the all important B main which would see the top two drivers take an automatic transfer spots to the A, and the third place driver with a shot at the Lucky Dog if his time was fast enough. At the tone it was Leading Edge owner Dave Whitesel out front followed closely by Chuck Kleinhagen in his Fastlane Raceways/CK Racing/Maverick chassis and Detroit winner Jason Crist in third. Whitesel would see his weekend come to an end after being caught up in an early accident which would shuffle the field and see Crist jump to the top spot. Race Sponsor Hays Reeling in the Lefthander R/C #6 would move up from last on the grid to take second followed by Solan Iowa’s AJ Strawn in the red #48. Kleinhagen who had fallen back to fourth after an incident that had put him nearly a lap down would start cranking out some of the fastest laps of the race. Up front Reeling was putting pressure on Crist. He would get within a car length a couple of time but was not able to get around the Ingalls, IN driver. In the last minute of the race the battle was on as Strawn and Kleinhagen caught the top two making in four car mixer. With the crowd on there feet and cheering them on second through fourth would change positions several times. As the checkered fell it was Crist, he would have enough to hold on to the win followed by Hay Reeling with some last lap heroics in second and Grain Valley, MO driver Kleinhagen finishing third. Kleinhagens time withstood the lower main winners assault securing him the Lucky Dog and final starting position in the A.
13.5 A-Main
As the A-Main launched off the line the Phil show continued with Beardshear opening up a comfortable margin through the first half of the race over Tony Mitchell in second and Bob Williams in third. Lap 46 proved to be the end of the Beardshear dominance as he would catch the left sides on the ice coming off two launching him into a half spin and being collected soon after by an oncoming car. The damage was to much for #34 car to continue and would hand the lead to a surprised but happy Mitchell in the red and black #81. Tony would hold on for the win followed by Bob Williams and a hard charging Kleinhagen who cashed his Lucky Dog starting position in for a podium finish. Jason Crist would finish fourth and retain his points lead after 2 rounds. Crist was followed to the line by Danny White, Hays Reeling, Phil Beardshear, and Pat Simpkins.
Pro 4300
The Pro 4300 class would see some of the tightest racing of the weekend with the leader board shuffling almost every heat. The final round of qualifying would see hometown hero Danny Bartholomew in his familiar all pink #18 take the TQ and track record away form Detroit Michigan’s Frank Ulbrik..
The dash action was all confined to the first lap when Ulbrik got together with Bartholomew. The crash ended Danny’s dash hopes and moved him to an inside row 3 starting spot for the final. Ulbrik would cruise on unchallenged for the win. Oshkosh, WI duo of Mike Makus and Corey Heft would follow in second and third with Michigan’s Mike Kingsley in fourth.
Pro 4300 B-Main
With an ultra competitive 57 car field just making it to the B-main was a major accomplishment.
Dave Zipp would start on the pole but be caught up on a first lap wreck that collected several car and would sideline Zipp and brushless rookie Dusty Kemp. Matt Gansen in his Hefty Cells powered Maverick chassis would put the #2 car out front followed by Ernie Parison and Detroit winner Keith Racknor. The black silver #8 of Racknor would smoothly work his way up the leader board passing fellow Michigan driver Parison on lap 29 and running down Gansen and passing for the lead 15 laps later. As the race entered the final minute all eyes where on the battle for second through fourth. Gansen, Parison, and Wisconsin driver Jason Hack would duke it out of the automatic transfer spot and a shot at the Lucy Dog. Just like the 13.5 B-Main the voice-torus crowed cheered their favorite drivers on. With less the 30 seconds to go Hack and Parison swapped the third place position a couple of times allowing Gansen just enough breathing room to hold on for second place finish behind Racknor. Hack would when the battle for third and take the Lucky Dog spot for the moment with a time of 78 5:01.38.
Pro 4300 Lower Mains
Hack’s elation would soon turn to concern when he realized he was on the bubble and would have to watch six lower mains and 44 drivers take a shot at his time. Michigan driver John Rohn was the first to make a run at Hack’s time in the E-main coming up just a lap short at the end. Hack would get a little more nervous watching the D main and seeing his friend Hays Reeling Jr. in the silver Lefthander R/C #4 on a pace that with less then a minute to go was going to be just good enough to bump Hack out of the A. Reeling’s pace would slow in the last minute allowing Hack to dodge yet another bullet.
As the C-main started a nervous Hack positioned himself just in front of the scoring monitor to watch. From the tone it was the guy Jason calls Grandpa Bill “Sully” Sullivan taking the lead in his BSR shod KSG chassis. Sully’s used his years of experience to pilot himself to a nearly perfect run and a pace on the borderline of knocking his adopted Grandson Hack out of the show. It was so close it came down to the finally laps with Sullivan knocking Hack off the bubble by the slimiest of margins.
Pro 4300 A-Main
The Stage was set for a thrilling A-main with ultra quick Hyperdrive of Frank Ulbrik on the pole flanked by the black #85 KSG of Mike Makus and TQ Danny Bartholomew starting fifth on the grid. Form the tone Ulbrik would take the lead but Bartholomew would have an amazing start moving up to third on the first lap. He would move under Makus for second on lap 7 and set his sights on the white #13 of Ulbrik. For the next 50 laps both driver would bang on some blistering laps with Ulbrik hugging the bottom and the pink car running just a little wider line and reeling him in by just a few feet every lap. Bartholomew made a few looks to the inside but Ulbrik slammed the door shut. On lap 60 Danny got a good driver underneath, as they entered the next corner side by side the two bumped briefly allowing Danny to take the lead. He would pull away to a 1 second advantage and take the win. Ulbrik would end up second in the race but leave Vinton with the points lead. Mike Makus would end up third, Corey Heft in fourth, a consistent drives by Mike Kingsley in fifth and Keith Racknor in sixth. Bill Sullivan would end up seventh and Matt Gansen rounded out the field.
Pro Modified
Danny Bartholomew continued his winning ways in the Pro Modified class. He established his Novak 3.5 powered Protoform Monte Carlo as the car to beat early on in the weekend. The only drama came in the third round late Saturday night when a tangle with another driver launched the pink #18 out of the park at full speed into a concrete wall destroying his primary KSG chassis. Crew chief and dad Tom Bartholomew put in some late hours at the shop but had DB ready for the fourth round on Sunday morning. Bartholomew would take the TQ over La Crosse, WI Craig Johnson and Ames, IA driver Mike Clement. Corey Heft would qualify fourth and Ronn Lauritzen form Jesup IA, fifth securing a trip to the A.
The dash was uneventful with Bartholomew taking a wire to wire victory and the rest of the crew staying in qualifying order. Scott Murphy in Hardee’s #29 would take the B-main win followed by Springfield, MO pilot Kevin Perry in second. Jason Hack would once again find himself in Lucky Dog spot of third but with no lower mod mains to come he was securely in the show.
Pro Modified A-Main
Danny Bartholomew rocketed off the line and would lead early turning some of the fastest laps of the weekend. But as in any race no lead is safe and a lap 9 crash would push him back to the second position allowing Craig Johnson to take over the top spot for the next 27 laps. Bartholomew was two strong and would take his newly built KSG chassis back to the point on Lap 37. Mike Clement settled into third at times battling the orange #20 of Lauritzen and the blue & yellow #3 of Hack. Clement would fall back at the 3 minute mark and Lauritzen would move up to third. Bartholomew cruised on to double up on the weekend and take his second win in less then 10 minutes. Johnson’s car would fall off the pace in the last 2 laps allowing a happy Lauritzen to take over second followed by Johnson in third, new point leader Corey Heft in fourth. Mike Clement finished fifth, Jason Hack sixth , Mike Murphy seventh, and Perry rounded out the finishing order.
The Hawkeye Classic was truly one for the record books with a 105 cars making this the largest Brushless race ever. A big Thank goes the sponsors that make this all possible John’s BSR Racing Tires, Lefthander R/C, and Novak and to all the associate sponsors that donated raffle items and allowed us to raise over $755 for the Victory Junction Gang bringing the season total to just under $1100.
The next stop on the BRL BSR Brushless Oval Tour is December 9th - 10th at Victory Hobbies in Green Bay Wisconsin for the Infinite Power Batteries, Hefty Cells Christmas Clash.
