View Full Version : Mounting the GTB
Al Spina Fan 11-25-2006, 09:25 PM So I have the GTB and have concluded that this monster is a challenge to place in the car. Normally, it would go just in ront of the left rear tire but this unit is so big that it would take 2 battery slots. I am sure others have faced this dilemna and any suggestions are appreciated.
thanks!
OvalTrucker 11-25-2006, 09:51 PM Most guys are mounting it in front of the LR.
What chassis are you mounting it on ?

What chassis are you mounting it on ? how about a custom works aggressor? and what about the cooling fan? i imagine you use it but have heard people removing it, i would'nt think this would not be a good idea! the guy that started this thread is rite, this controller is a monster. a few tips would be nice, anyone????
brian0525 11-25-2006, 11:47 PM I have a KSG and mine is mounted in front of the left rear tire. I don't run the fan and I run 4300 and 13.5 with no issues of heat at all. I have also seen some people run no heat sink without issue but that's to far for me. I have seen a couple that had clearance issues with the shock tower and sanded or cut someof the heatsink down and that also worked good.
Hope that is a help!

Al Spina Fan 11-26-2006, 07:49 AM Thanks for the ideas. I will consider the options and post if I find a better solution.
Johnny, I am also putting it on the Aggressor and will consult with Mr. Fastman as soon as he and the wife return from florida.

we've been running the gtb's all season without the fan or the heatsink in 13.5 and 4300's so far no problems. about 6 of us are running this way.
Danny B 11-26-2006, 09:14 PM If you are going to be running 13.5 or 4300, I would take the fan, heat sink and power cap off and just put a piece of lexan over the fets to keep dirt/ tire foam out.
I've been running with the 3.5 for the open mod class, I don't run the fan but I do run the heat sink and power cap for mod. The speedo barely gets warm. i also took the first 4-5 fins out of the heat sink for clearence and adjustability purposes.

Sonny B 11-26-2006, 10:44 PM Jim.
Take the heat sink and mill off the fins. It looks a little nivcer then lexan. As Danny B said you will not have any heat issues to worry about. I should be in New Castle this coming weekend and will show you how to mount it on a Custom Works Chassis.
Also no need for the Nomadio the temp sensor will not be of benefit.

McLin 11-27-2006, 09:54 PM I just asked the fan question on another thread, I hadn’t seen this one. NO HEAT SINK EITHER? Boy that makes me nervous but if “Gomer” says it’s OK then I’ll try it too! ANYTHING to take some weight off of that monster!
McLin 11-27-2006, 11:04 PM I just re read something in here and before I blow this thing up before I get it on the track, am I understanding you guys right that you are REMOVING the Power Trans Cap? The instructions a pretty clear to leave it on.
Hurricane Racer 11-27-2006, 11:08 PM Majority of the racers I see running 4300 and 13.5, do remove the heatsink/fan and the power cap. The cap is really only for consistant on/off throttle, such as a tight oval track or touring car, also in mod applications. The heatsink isnt really needed, most remove it and replace with a piece of lexan. They were run this way on the outdoor track at the Triclone in WI, and no one ever had a problem with one....

McLin 11-27-2006, 11:27 PM DANG! You guys are making me take OFF all this stuff I JUST PAID FOR!!! LOL
McLin 11-27-2006, 11:28 PM BUT the lexan cover is good place for a RC-Oval decal !!!!!!
johnnyhacksaw 11-27-2006, 11:59 PM BUT the lexan cover is good place for a RC-Oval decal !!!!!! mill the heat sink down, put it back on. thats what i did, worked great on my cw car with new shock brace also.
IndyRC_Racer 11-28-2006, 12:35 AM What was used to "mill" down the heatsink?
johnnyhacksaw 11-28-2006, 12:49 AM What was used to "mill" down the heatsink?ever heard of a dremel with a cut off wheel (lol!!) wack off cooling fins then clamp in vise and use sanding block with 80 grit sand paper, block off as needed.my cooling fins are about total gone.
McLin 11-28-2006, 06:51 PM I whimped out with the Lexan cover and stopped by the hobby shop and picked up a small 4 x 10 inch sheet of .30 aluminum, that way i can keep the heat sink compound in there too and if there is any heat, it will have a place to go.
Now to the soldering iron and removing the cap!
DaveW 11-28-2006, 07:00 PM What was used to "mill" down the heatsink?
I used a belt sander, it looks like it was cut on a mill.
IndyRC_Racer 11-29-2006, 05:02 PM Thanks for the info Dave. A dremel could be used, but I can't always acheive professional looking results with one.
TeamGoodwrench 12-01-2006, 05:15 PM I just asked the fan question on another thread, I hadn’t seen this one. NO HEAT SINK EITHER? Boy that makes me nervous but if “Gomer” says it’s OK then I’ll try it too! ANYTHING to take some weight off of that monster!
YUP -- I did the same with mine. I run the 13.5 class, and it runs just great if you take off the heatsink, fan, AND the 50-gallon drum-sized can.
rcgen 12-02-2006, 10:46 AM No fan, no heatsink, and no cap...what types of tracks are you all running this setup? I run 4300 outdoors on asphault year round on a 300'+ track.
Sonny B 12-02-2006, 11:24 AM Snowbird's size carpet tracks + or - 40 feet. Speedo will typically be around 100 degrees after 5 minus. Motor temps for 4300 w/sintered rotor around 130 to 140. Standard Rotor 150-165.
With the 13.5 everything runs cool.
shrabber 12-02-2006, 05:53 PM I Have A Ksg And I First Mounted It Under The Left Front Tire But I Have Since Cutss All The Wires Shorter An Mounted It Just Above The Right Rear Tire
McLin 12-02-2006, 10:21 PM Well, I got my feet wet today! My first experience with brushless on the track and like it or not…..you guys are stuck with me! LOL I had a blast with the 4300. Looking forward to next weekend and the Virginia Oval Championships at Thunder Road.
