View Full Version : The BEST 1/4 scale racing car????
Q/S NASCAR 11-22-2006, 07:08 PM Please let me know the best of all the 1/4 scale cars kits, avalilable today, Pro1, Lightning, Danny's, WCM, or another you already race, i'm inthe difficult process of buying a new one, please help me!!!
jgoodwin 11-23-2006, 12:22 AM I have to give this SA answer. Which is better Chevy, Ford or Dodge? Same with 1/4 scale. Everyone of the Mfg's makes the best car possible in their minds. You ask a guy with a WCM and he is going to say buy a WCM they are the best. If you are looking to buy a new car this is a big investment. I suggest you do your homework and ask everyone you can as many questions as you can. I run a Lighting, is the best? What ever you buy is only as good as the setup and the drivers skill. I see a lot of guys buy stuuf because they have the money to buy the trick stuff but if you have no experience is it really worth it. I have a Hobby Shop and I try to lead people in the right direction without putting the money factor in it. If a guy comes in and sees a hot battery pack that is $20 bucks more. I ask him why he thinks that will make him faster? If you can't run the perfect line for the length of the race without hitting anything they are not going to help you. Spend that $20 Bucks on track time to practice. I know I got off track about your question.
What ever you buy learn everything there is to know about how it works. Minute changes can make a big change on a 1/4 car. It is a slow learning curve if you have been racing 1/10th scale. They are very, very different.
Hope this helps a little. Good luck in your quest. When you get it come up to Easley and run with us.

Echeconnee 11-23-2006, 10:04 AM Any thoughts on the Cat 5 Pedator? How many companys make bodies for 1/4 scales. Does anyone make a Charger?

mcRacing 11-23-2006, 01:11 PM dude you should look into one of jamie belfiore's chassis they are sick he is on this site as belf28 i believe
Echeconnee 11-23-2006, 07:08 PM what car is it? Are parts redily available? Is the motor mounted laydown style?dude you should look into one of jamie belfiore's chassis they are sick he is on this site as belf28 i believe
Belf28 11-23-2006, 11:49 PM i build a few chassis designs, some full cage chassis & your convetional qsac style chassis.
my latest design "convetional qsac style chassis".
has the motor layed down & uses WCM rear controll arms.
i also use WCM upper A-Arms WCM steering rack and WCM front swaybar.
so to awnser your question "are the parts avilable"..yes and you could convert a out dated wcm car over to a up to date car.
the rest of the suspension components are machined by me lower front A- Arms front spindels rear shock mounts ect.
check my gallery for a pic of one of my caged chassis
i will post some pics of the new car sunday

The CAT 5 car is a well built car. It has Pro1 shocks, design elements from the WCM chassis as well as some Lightning aspects in the front end construction.
I cannot speak for Danny's because I have no knowledge of his product.
WCM: Rick is a good guy; dedicated to quarter scale racing and QSAC. A good, solid product; very dependable.
Pro1: Jim is another good guy; very similar to Rick, just hasn't been doing it near as long. The Pro1 is a very solid car and runs well. Good parts availability (PayPal enhanced website; very nice).
Lightning: Long history with the name; Terry Rae (sp?) originally made the Thunderbot chassis and through design change and development he changed the name to Lightning. Chuck Beaman bought Terry's product and naming rights and moved the product line out to California. Chuck, like Rick and Jim is dedicated to the hobby. Probably the lightest chassis out of the box.
Gram Cracker: Gary Crumb makes these cars from scratch. These are some of the coolest, most realistic looking cars on the earth; period. Fast in the hands of good drivers. Set-up is a bit different compared to Pro1, Lightning and WCM. Lead time for a car is over a year last I heard.
Bottom line: All of these cars are good and I think the CAT 5 will also be a good car. One of the things to really consider with a quarter scaler is which brand is run at your local track. Where I race, Machesney Park Raceway in Machesney Park, IL, is a WCM backed track. There are three of four guys that run Pro1's with good luck and a Lightning or two, but over the years there have been more WCMs that have run well on a consistant basis, week-in and week-out.
This same question is often posted in the 1/10th scale and the same holds true; most are good, some are better. Run what is supported at your local track.
Best wishes.

Well said Joe. I concur with your assessment. At our track in Lansing Michigan, I have seen Gram Cracker, Pro1, Lightning, and WCM. WCM seems to be the more dormant, but not the one that always wins. I would attribute that to the caliber of driver more than the car itself. I have a WCM this being my 1st year in the sport I took 2nd place in the points for the year. Not bad for a rookie. I am sure the outcome would have not been much different with any of the other cars. What a blast though, if I would have had any more fun, I would have to take something for it!

Jim-
If you are connected with the Lansing guys, then you definitely see all the makes. Greg Bartman is good with a Lightning; Mike Reninger is good with a Gram Cracker; Brent Gottfried is good with his WCM. I know there are others with that group, but I know those guys through racing the Tri-State Series.
Glad you are racing quarter pounders. Initial cost is higher; but annual cost is cheaper once you are addicted! :) I am waiting for a couple of remaining parts for my new WCM sprinter. Looking forward to racing against Randy Baker and Fred Murry; hopefully I can keep up with Randy (and Fred); Randy's had a dominate sprinter the last three years or so.
Best of luck.
Joe
Echeconnee 11-24-2006, 10:19 AM I had the opportunity to see several different chassis run @ Lagoon park. I think there were pro1, grahm Cracker, WCM and Lightning present. I drove the winners car (Randy Brown/Grahm Cracker) and was hooked after that. I realize the question "what is the best car" can get many different answers from many different people but in asking this question you get some answers about all brands that can't be seen by race results and viewing the car on a website. My advantage at this point is that the season is over for a while and I don't have to make a decision right away.

Man I get no love.
Joe39 11-24-2006, 12:14 PM Man I get no love.
If it's love you want..., talk with Pirrello. :)
Sonny runs strong too; WCM kinda guy as well. How's that for love (in a platonic way)?

PS I remember this one race at MPR, I was leading and then...

well like everyone says you ask 10 different people a question you get 10 different answers .i currently run a wcm ive done well with it and i have looked at all the cars closly.and the next car i think that i mite purchase would be the cat 5 i like the fact that he took some design from all the cars and put into one car.just my two cents hope this helps
Brad Boling 11-28-2006, 01:27 PM I personally am running a WCM right now, but the CAT 5 Disruptor is a slick chassis. Pro 1 shocks, Laydown motor, some WCM & Lightning suspension technology. It looks like a very adjustable car, also Scott is a hell of a nice guy, and willing to help anyone.
Tim Mc 11-29-2006, 01:36 AM Buy one of each, make your own decision
Seriously,
I don't think you can go wrong with any of the Mfg's if you are buying new. Used? Be careful. Ask for local help when buying used. If not, ask here. I'm sure one of these fine racers will give an honest opinion. :)
I would also look for information on a local level. If one Mfg is dominant at your local track, this could be the best starting point? Setup support, part replacement and optional aftermarket fixes will come from the local racers.
There are many OEM items on a car that can be and are often substituted by racers from various sources like Lowes, Hardware stores, craft centers, McMaster...ect. Using your own imagination when repairing a 1/4 car will surprise you....especially when desperate!
Good luck with your choice!
Tim
Echeconnee 11-29-2006, 08:52 AM What, no duct tape?
i ran both a lightning and wcm, both very good cars.as a matter of fact i have a 2003 wcm for sale as i no longer have time to race in the summer
Tim Mc 11-29-2006, 09:34 AM Yes, Duct tape is a must!!!
IN2RACIN 11-29-2006, 12:16 PM I can not say anything that hasn't been said already (on this topic).....In the right hands I think all the mfg's can be winners.............. I myself race Pro1 cars, both NASCAR (style) GN and Sprints. I'm very happy with Pro1. Great cars and excellent service..... Check them out here: www.pro1z.com (http://www.pro1z.com) You can also get more Info. on cars, rules, tracks , ect here. www.qsac.org (http://www.qsac.org)
Where will you race your 1/4 scale?

Echeconnee 11-29-2006, 12:23 PM We will probably race mostly in Montgomery and then some in Easley, both are about 3 hours away. Clover is about 4 hours, I think.
Echeconnee 11-29-2006, 10:44 PM Thanks for all of your input guys. I talked to Scott @ Cat 5 today about ordering a couple of cars, we should have them soon after the 1st of the year (santa has to rebuild his funds, lol). There are a lot of great cars available, some better than others and some more complicated than others. We just felt like the cat 5 would be a good competitive car for a couple of 1/4 pounder newbies.
big maestro 11-29-2006, 11:36 PM You can't go wrong with Scott. Great guy to deal with. I have had nothing but the best customer service from him. You order a part you get it in a couple days not a week or two when you already missed a race. Plus the cars are sweet. :)
Echeconnee 11-30-2006, 09:19 AM If my q-scale collection looks anything like my other stuff, I will probably own a little bit of everything before it's over.
shaker 12-28-2006, 07:24 PM I own a wcm and so far I love it.
