I have been an associated guy for a long time and have raced carpet oval in the past. Right now I run a TC4 on the oval and want to get back in the oval pan car racing. Can the RC10L4 be competitive? All the guys here say that the only car to buy is a KSG Gen2 and they all say that the L4 is not the way to go. Is it worth buying the KSG or can the L4 be just as good?

The L4 can run just as good as any of the other cars out there. There is a guy at my local track that runs an l4 and does very well, he also runs l3's and l2's with a lot of success.

Butch, The done side of the L4 is it's just not as adjustable as the other cars out there. You may run just fine at your local track with it, but if you go to another track you just can't tune it to that track. Problem is if your track is the one were it just very hard to tune it in, it's fustrating. It is a very good car to get into oval racing with, there cheaper and you can find used ones all the time. I would sugest going with a KSG gen 2 but if you aren't sure if pan car oval is for you buy a used car, any one and then go from there to a new one. You'll see very quickly why guys like the KSG over the L4.

You can always put a conversion kit on the L4 as well..

Leading Edge/Silva/etc.. Plenty of guys running them keeping up with KSG etc..

I raced pan car oval about 10 years ago and used a rc10lss back then and it worked great. I held 3 track records with them but so much has changed since then and I want a car that will work.

badbutch,

I will and can say in the right hands the L4 can be real competitive, I've been running them for several years with my son driving them, however I switched over to a USED KSG Gen 1 car a few months ago. With nearly the same exact setup, the same motor, gear ratio, battery and body combo...the car easily picked up .2-.3 tenths on a 400 ft. track.

I have also picked up a KSG gen2 car (USED) Very nice car...we were supposed to debut it last weekend on a short carpet track, but didn't get to make that race.

a NEW 10L4 vs. a USED KSG gen 2 car.... Go for the Gen2. I think there are 2 or 3 in the Oval Swap here on HobbyTalk for under $250 bucks.

I looked and they are all sold.. I put an ad out there for 2 KSG gen 2's and hope to get some action.. I guess that will be the way to go.. If I buy the L4 and have to get the upgrades it will cost the same $ as a new KSG.. Thanks for all the help

look at what your local racers are running and what your local hobby shop handels as far as parts go. i would try to stick with that you will get alot of help from the locals and have the parts you need at hand. all of the kits available are great. i personally like the leading edge cars but that doesn't mean they are it.

Butch, I think Mike V hit the nail on the head. When I ran my L4 the car was very consistent from week to week, but it seemed that no matter what I changed on the car, it went the exact same speed. It wasn't until I got my first KSG that I got over the "hump" and the car finally got that last little bit of speed I was looking for. The KSG for whatever reason is a lot more sensetive to changes, which can be a good or bad thing if you think about it I guess. Look at it this way too, No matter where you go, there are going to be guys running a ksg, and it won't be hard to find help. Not very many guys around here run a L4 anymore, and the ones that do, I'm not sure I would want to ask them for advice.

what can you change or adjust on a ksg that you cant change on an l4?

On a gen 1 you can slide the wheel base shorter or longer ,you can adjust the side shocks up and down.

On a gen 2 you can slide the wheel base shorter or longer and in and out.You can adjust the side shocks up and down ,you can move the whole pod to the left or right or center along with the center shock mount and still offset the pod.And of corse you can slide the batt tray back and fourth,it allso has a spot for speed control and reciver and reciver pack if you want.

I run 2 Gen 2s and one solid gen1 very happy with them .

But to be fair there are more good cars out there like Hyperdrive Pro 3,Maverick 5.5, Custom Works Aggressor,if I were to look at a new kit I would look at all of them.

with the l4 can you move the battery tray back and forward? on my l3 there are holes to shorten wheel base and to move the rear pod to the left. however i cant move my front tire to the left or right with out using spacers. what does it do when you move the side shocks up and down?

You can shim the LF and RF with axle shims to move your front end around, there are a lot of really good oval cars on the market right now pick the one that has the best support in your area, which sounds like the KSG,it's HD pro 3 around here.Practically every car on all the tracks around here is a HD Pro 3.

It is not just holes it is a slide type hole so alot more adjustments.

Its not just offseting the pod, IT HAS 3 SETS OF HOLES TO MOVE THE WHOLE shock mount T plate to the left OR right THEN you can offset the pod also.

Moving the side shock up and down makes the spring react diffrent to adjustments.I run mine allmost level rather than a down slop like your L3 or L4.

You should look at the car so you can see the diffrences.

Thanks for all the great info.. I just bought a KSG gen2 and am looking for another one so my son and I both have the same cars. 90% of the guys that run at our local track run the KSG's so from what I gather that is the best way to go..

Tom shouldn't you be in school? It 1pm? when I was in school many many moons ago, I was there from 7am-4pm no days off, I guess school has changed I guess, anyways Tom, it isnt the "car" that your getting beat, it's other drivers. Just keep practicing and you will be fine. L$ was a great car when I ran it when it first came out, nothing bad to say about it, set-up and tracktime is the best for you in my opinion. Also, make sure you check if anything is binding up in the car, because it is a smooth car. I will be @ Maximus tonight if your there I will help you with it again. And by the way, your getting beat by sponsored drivers in the stock class there, He is moving up to the pro-stock class very soon, just working out some thing before he does. dont think your driving bad or it's the car, he is on a different level. See you tonight?
