View Full Version : Robert Altman passes chiangkaishecky 11-21-2006, 02:48 PM Forbes (?!?) all of sites has a nice retrospective http://www.forbes.com/business/commerce/feeds/ap/2006/11/21/ap3194482.html gruffydd 11-21-2006, 03:27 PM First I heard this, wow, what can I say - a true American Master one of the all-time greatest. Jeez. Griffworks 11-21-2006, 03:38 PM While I've not enjoyed all of his movies, I've certainly appreciated Mr. Altman's style on all that I've seen. Sad to see him go. Zorro 11-21-2006, 03:51 PM One of my favorite directors. He changed the language of American film and many younger directors are indebted to him. A long life and a prolific career - and it was so obvious that he loved what he did. He fell on his face now and then - some of his movies were definite misses, but then there was McCabe and Mrs. Miller, M.A.S.H., Nashville, Short Cuts, and so many other original, compelling, unique stories that he told in such a memorable way. I sorta' loved this guy. He lived a damned good life. gruffydd 11-21-2006, 05:46 PM ^Thanks, well put. Ones that are often overlooked: California Split, Long Goodbye, Brewster McCloud (!) Me, I loved Cookie's Fortune and Gosford Park and The Player was kinda creepy. Carson Dyle 11-21-2006, 06:06 PM No one represented the cinematic golden age of American realism better than Robert Altman. The man was a maverick in every sense of the word. My God, how the industry has changed. Not to mention the audience. PhilipMarlowe 11-21-2006, 06:17 PM Ones that are often overlooked: California Split, Long Goodbye, Brewster McCloud (!) love The Long Goodbye, only Altman would think to drop Philip Marlowe square into the seventies, and I can't think of anybody but Altman that would have been inspired to cast Elliot Gould as Marlowe. While I didn't love all his movies, even the less-than-steller ones were interesting. Zorro 11-21-2006, 10:58 PM How many remember Altman's first feature? It wasn't his only foray into Sci-Fi. http://ec2.images-amazon.com/images/P/6300269965.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V1056620701_.jpg The Batman 11-21-2006, 11:28 PM One of my least favorite directors... still, I'm sorry to hear that he's gone. I know a lot of his fans will be disapointed. - GJS spe130 11-22-2006, 04:40 AM M*A*S*H is one of my all-time favorites...he was a true artist. gruffydd 11-27-2006, 02:59 PM How many remember Altman's first feature?
