I got mine in the mail from Amazon yesterday, and watched most of it last night. It's a pretty nice set, whether it's the remastering or because they found a better print, the movie looks decidely better than the previous decent earlier DVD version, especially in terms of color. The sound seems clearer and the new 5.1 mix adds a real eerie feeling to the electronic soundtrack. Even without the extras, it's a worthy upgrade. While I haven't watched all the extras yet, the ones I've seen are entertaining and well-done. The Watch the Skies and Robby documentary are pretty good (The Robby doc has some great footage for robot builders!), but I thought the doc on Forbidden Planet itself was kind of blah. Still got quite a bit more stuff to check out.

I got the deluxe box set, I was surprised how nice the Robby figure turned out to be, I was expecting something really cheap & cheesy but it's actually a pretty detailed and accurate figure, albeit a tiny one!:

Yep. He's a cute little feller.

I just finished watching the last of the deluxe set early this morning. Excellent transfer and extras. Can't wait for the Blu-ray release to see it in HD glory.

Got mine yesterday too. The little lobby cards will add a little "theatre feel" to the TV room when I hang some of them up.

I love it, FP is my favorite sf film, and the one that got me hooked on sf. This set with the deleted scenes, and the un-used effects is great. I wish that they had the deleted scene where Morbius tells Altaira to choose between him and Adams.

There is also an effects scene that I have seen twice, once at a convention in a print of FB, and once on tv in a UFO 'documentry'. It is a scene of C-57-D going into Orbit around Altair IV, and it 'twists' on its axis as it goes into orbit. I wish that that one were in the lost scenes.

The un-used effects and the tests of Altair IV, and the starfield are fantastic. I have always said that the ID was the Krell form with Morbius's face, it even has the beard and tail. According to Stephen J. Rubinn in one of his articles in Cinefantastique the Krell were suppose to be frog-shaped, with a dragging tail. That is why the stairs had ramps, and the seats had cut-outs.

Does anyone know what has happened to Mr. Rubbin? He is someone that they should have had in the FB special on the second disc.

David.

I just experienced Deja Vu. Again.

Carson, thanks. I have no idea how I could have missed your reply back in May, but I somehow did, and I appreciate your pointing it out to me. When I met him, Mr Rubin was a very nice man willing to tell you anything he knew. I think that they missed a great oportunity in not getting him for the dvd.

Once again, thanks.

David.

Four of the stars of the film (Anne Francis, Earl Holliman, Warren Stevens, and Richard Anderson) were present to discuss the film and, according to Mr. Holliman, the entire film (both audio and video) has been digitally enhanced for the new DVD release. It certainly showed on the big screen, and the sound was incredibly clear. I'd never seen the film in a theater, and it was wonderful to see the C57D flying through space (in the opening sequences) with such clarity.

Thanks for the mini-review Philip!

Just watched this new DVD last night. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but this is the first time I have seen Forbidden Planet in color!!! Last time I saw it was on our B&W TV in 1965. It was an incredible movie and so ahead of its time in terms of special effects and story. It certainly stands the test of time better than 95% of the other sci-fi movies.

I know that my Mother in law got this flick for me for Christmas in the SE package. My wife is lousy with secrets. lol.
This makes it all the sweeter! One of my favorite movies..

Received this as a Christmas present (the 2-disk set without Robby) and am enjoying it immensely.

I saw the screening at Wonderfest a few years back and thought that print was amazing. It was like seeing the film for the first time. So, an even better print has been circulating in theaters? I would love to see that.

I had a well-watched VHS copy, then laserdsic, now the new DVD. I love this film on many levels. The art direction and effects are superb, the story adapted from Shakespeare is top-notch and the casting is spot-on.

As a huge fan of The Thin Man films, it was a hoot to see the Thin Man TV episode with Robby. I can't say I've ever considered the TV show to be on par with Powell and Loy, but it was a fun episode.

I really enjoyed the deleted and lost scenes. One in particular always bugged me. When the ship comes out of hyperdrive in range of Altair 4 Doc mentions it's hot in the ship. Commander Adams looks in the scope and gripes at Jerry before running to the view screen to show us the image of Altair. His griping at Jerry goes unexplained in the feature. The deleted footage explains it as Jerry is always cutting his hyperdrive jumps a bit too close for the Commander's comfort. To quote Jayne from Serenity, "Well now I know that."

I guess you must be on their bad side, so they didn't offer it to you.

Maybe "Huzz" means something bad in Krellian.
