View Full Version : Remember when.....
Trekfreak 11-14-2006, 02:18 PM For those who live in the Tri- State area, remember when they would show King Kong movies (King Kong(1938), Son of Kong, Mighty Joe Young) on Thanksgiving Day and then Godzilla movies (King Kong vs. Godzilla, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. Hedora, the Smog Monster) on the Friday after? That was a tradition for me. Nothing said Black Friday to me than watching King Kong stuff a tree down Godzilla's throat. Since they haven't aired those movies for quite some time now, I rely my trusty DVD collection to help fill that need for tradition. Please share your thoughts.
Old_McDonald 11-14-2006, 02:43 PM I remember(here in the South) my parents dropping me off to the movie theatres on Sat. afternoon and staying until nightfall. Lots of good sci-fi and action movies, serials, cartoons. I remeber epic films like The ten commandments, Ben Hur, Cleopatra, and the longest day. Today, chainstore threaters demand movies be less than two hours so they can show more often. Most of today's movies are shot in the dark to save on effects and background cost, celebrities are using body doubles to trick us into thinking they are sexy, and finally, almost all movies made today are remakes of already fantasitic movies such as War of the Worlds. Me thinks that progress is not always a good thing.
SteveR 11-14-2006, 02:52 PM I miss the cartoon before the feature.
And a relatively quiet theatre before the show.
ClubTepes 11-14-2006, 03:04 PM In S.E. Michigan, WKBD TV-50 used to do 'Monster Week' which was always Godzilla films.
Ahh, the older days of TV were pretty cool. Local stations coming up with goofy stuff. 'The Ghoul' was also a big thing around here.
Zorro 11-14-2006, 03:53 PM Mom and Dad used to drop me off at the movie theater near my grandparent's house after Thanksgiving dinner because as an only child I found the after-meal adult conversation boring enough to kill. For some reason, it seems like there was always an Elvis Presley movie playing on Thanksgiving. Those Elvis Presley movies pretty much sucked!
john guard 11-14-2006, 04:05 PM just how old ARE some of you guys???
gruffydd 11-14-2006, 04:26 PM just how old ARE some of you guys???
My collections (models, movies, books) were always a source of security, i.e., "good, glad I got that, nice to have that on hand," etc.
Now all too often I see all "the stuff" as a reminder of my mortality, i.e., "betcha don't get to that before you die, just how much time do you think you have left, anyhow?'
:(
Gotta snap out of it!
SteveR 11-14-2006, 04:36 PM just how old ARE some of you guys???Not old. Seasoned. ;)
John P 11-14-2006, 04:50 PM Yup, I remember the Kong festivals. Usually on WOR Channel 9.
I guess i could run my own now, with the recent DVD set. :)
scotpens 11-14-2006, 05:16 PM just how old ARE some of you guys???Old enough to remember when there were new Studebakers and Ramblers in dealers' showrooms, the electric typewriter was the latest thing in office equipment, and African-Americans were Negroes! :p (Speaking for myself, anyway.)
Anybody in the SoCal area remember horror-movie host "Seymour" (aka Larry Vincent) on Channel 9? He was doing much of the same schtick Elvira did a decade later, only he was a lot funnier.

Yes I remember Seymour well - the Slimy Wall! Banjo Billy! The Attack of the Mushroom People and The Blob were some of the fodder. Pre- Mystery Science Theater-like commentary. KHJ-TV Channel 9 - Groovy, Robert W. Morgan, etc.
I was THERE in the 60s, in spite of what they say.
The stuff I don't remember is what just happened. What was it again?
Just Plain Al 11-14-2006, 06:02 PM That stuffs easy, I don't remember what I had for lunch!
terryr 11-14-2006, 06:28 PM I went to dozens of saturday matinees. Never saw any movies though. Spent all my time throwing rock hard Nibs at other kids and filling my straw full of coke and squirting people. Talk about audience participation.
Old_McDonald 11-14-2006, 06:48 PM Not old. Seasoned. ;)
Amen.... good answer.
I'm old enough to remember 50 cent movie tickets at matinee time....25 cent comic books, and all the popcorn and coke I could eat during the movie for a dollar.
It's not that some of us are old, it's how fast the dollar is becoming worthless... a ala peso My first car was a new Camaro I bought for 2,400 dollars (yes, 24 hundred for a new Camaro) and car insurance only cost 150 a year and a gallon of gas was a quarter.
I pity the young generation that is born in the next 10 years or so. Our world is getting more like the Ferengi every day.

that's what the Sci-Fi channel is supposed to be showing.....instead, we get ECW (we need a barf emoticon here) :dude:
Trekfreak 11-14-2006, 07:18 PM that's what the Sci-Fi channel is supposed to be showing.....instead, we get ECW (we need a barf emoticon here) :dude:
I remember watching ECW back when it aired late night on some cable sports channel. Back then that wrestling show was violent (Basically picture the first battle between the Scotts and the Brits from Braveheart). People getting torn up with barb wire, burned on flaming tables, steel chairs smashed into people's heads and guys actually thrown into the spectators seats. Oh it was beautiful! Good Times! Good Times!
It's lost its egde since Vince McManhon bought it and put it back on TV.
Trying to make it family friendly  !
ilbasso 11-14-2006, 09:47 PM I remember back in 1963 when I was 6, there was going to be a partial eclipse of the sun visible in my town. For some reason, I was scared of it so I asked my parents to send me to the movies for the afternoon. It was a triple feature: The Blob, Them, and The Tingler. I had nightmares for weeks! I would have been better off staring directly at the eclipse and burning out my retinas!
scotpens 11-14-2006, 11:05 PM I went to dozens of saturday matinees. Never saw any movies though. Spent all my time throwing rock hard Nibs at other kids and filling my straw full of coke and squirting people. So that little S.O.B. was YOU!
terryr 11-15-2006, 12:07 PM So you're that one guy in the middle who was trying to watch the movie!
That was one goopy theater. You had to pull your feet off the floor with every step.
PhilipMarlowe 11-15-2006, 12:45 PM Mom and Dad used to drop me off at the movie theater near my grandparent's house after Thanksgiving dinner because as an only child I found the after-meal adult conversation boring enough to kill. My parents used to do the same, I can remember seeing gems like Clambake and Spinout on Thanksgiving and Christmas, till you posted that I always thought it was a strictly Memphis-phenomenon.
And yeah, Elvis movies sucked big-time. Still, you got to give the E-man credit for playing characters with a good work ethic, Elvis never had just one job in a movie. He always played guys that were a carnival worker/singer/race car driver, or Navy Frogman/painter/lounge singer. And even juggling dual careers, he always had time to adopt an orphan or two.
Trekfreak 11-15-2006, 02:36 PM I never saw an Elvis movie. Judging from what you guys have said I should consider myself lucky.
Old_McDonald 11-15-2006, 03:30 PM I never saw an Elvis movie. Judging from what you guys have said I should consider myself lucky.
I rather enjoyed them....at no time has 20 somethingyear old girls ever looked better in skin tight pants/miniskirts shaking their booties to the music. Gotta love those beach blanket bingo movies for the same reason.....course, one had to at least be in puberty to enjoy what I'm talking about.
PhilipMarlowe 11-15-2006, 03:57 PM I rather enjoyed them....at no time has 20 somethingyear old girls ever looked better in skin tight pants/miniskirts shaking their booties to the music. .
That's to keep you from noticing the 30-40 year-old guys playing "teenagers".
Zorro 11-15-2006, 04:00 PM Gotta love those beach blanket bingo movies for the same reason.....course, one had to at least be in puberty to enjoy what I'm talking about.
I like Eric Von Zipper. That's about it. Annette Funicello in her above-the-navel "bikini" never did much for me. There were lots of crappy movies made in the Sixties. They were just a different kind of crappy than we get now.
john guard 11-15-2006, 04:19 PM dont be chicken, gimme your ages!!!!!!!!!!!!

Old enough to know no straight man should be that interested in another man's age, or how much hair he has left.

Ok, let's see if you can walk the walk.
I'm 53,.I was born the same month and year that Marilyn Monroe graced the pages of the first issue of Playboy magazine..... outlived some of my high school friends who went to Vietnam so I consider myself lucky to be almost double nickel. And yes, I still have my dark blond hair with just a touch of gray on the side burns. :dude:
How old are you good buddy?
Lloyd Collins 11-15-2006, 05:29 PM I don't remember much of my childhood. It is mostly a blank. I never used drugs, or alcoholic drinks. Buut I built many models. Would the glue and paint......what was I saying?
Eric K 11-15-2006, 06:10 PM hookay...Since this has turned into the "elvis Thread", what was the Elvis movie that had a haunted house and a wierd chase at the end with people falling into deep mud? Saw that as a kid and can't remember wht it was or the name of it.

41. Full head of hair, some gray.
Anything else you need to know? I like moonlight walks, puppies and chicks with big hooters.
Eric K 11-15-2006, 06:47 PM What about hooters with big puppies?
Old_McDonald 11-15-2006, 06:53 PM Well, that's better than puppies with big hooters
.

wrong P.M.!!!!!!!!
a real man says " I'M [DELETED] 40 YEARS OLD AND I HAVE ALL MY HAIR [DELETED]!!!!"
or a real man says "I'M 55 AND BALD BUT I'M [DELETED] PROUD OF MY BEER BELLY!
"
a "non-man" says "ooooo! i wont tell you my age or about my receding hairline, so i can feel like a big man" !!!!!!!!!!

What, you're skipping the double-dog dare? Have you no sense of playground etiquette, sir?
As discussed in less-inane threads segments, I'm 44. As those who met me at Wonderfest can attest, or those that bothered to look in the numerous WF threads with pics, I still have my hair.
I still don't see why a straight guy has a burning desire to know his fellow modelers age & hairline, but since it's obviously very important to you there ya' go.
FYI, I can still wear a pair of levi's with 32 on the waist-tag just like I did in high-school, as long as I sand off the 36 off the leather tag and replace it with a 32.
Zorro 11-15-2006, 08:03 PM I like Pina Coladas. And taking walks in the rain. And I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die. And I live at the end of Lonely Street, at Heartbreak Hotel.
And they'll be ga ga at the go go when they see me in my toga, My toga made of blond Brilliantined Biblical hair.

HEY!! NOBODY IS INTERESTED IN YOUR PANTS!!!!!!!!!!!
THATS JUST SICK!!!
if you wanna share about clothes, go to a "pretty boy" forum!!
YEEECH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
scotpens 11-16-2006, 01:04 AM I never saw an Elvis movie. Judging from what you guys have said I should consider myself lucky.Actually his early film performances (from Love Me Tender through King Creole) weren't bad at all. It was his "people" (read The Colonel) who insisted on putting him in those dumb formula pictures starting with G.I. Blues in 1960. Had he been given the chance, he could surely have become a much better actor — but that’s for the what-if category.I like Pina Coladas. And taking walks in the rain. And I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die. And I live at the end of Lonely Street, at Heartbreak Hotel.
And they'll be ga ga at the go go when they see me in my toga, My toga made of blond Brilliantined Biblical hair.Do you wear it with blue suede shoes and a brand-new leopardskin pillbox hat?

scotpens 11-17-2006, 12:37 AM Gladys Ormphby and Tyrone S. Horneye! Want a Walnetto?Close. It was Tyrone F. Horneigh.
Perhaps a relative of Honey Hornée in Wayne's World II?
Griffworks 11-17-2006, 01:15 PM OK folks, that's enough about somewhat adult topics. I'm no prude as most of you know, but the rules here are pretty clear on the subject. Unless, of course, you're talking about owls. :)
john guard, this is a warning about three things:
1) Use of special characters to simulate harsh language. Hank has publicly placed a notice here about that, as well as placed it in the TOS. You also used a curse word that's not acceptable here, either.
2) Use of all caps - several times. That's also in the TOS.
3) Insults and insinuations about others. It's got no place here and is also a violation of TOS.
You've got a history of this sort of stuff here at HT where you stir up some stink. Do any of those again and you get a one week time out. That's the last warning you get from me. Place Nice With Others.
LUKE'57 11-17-2006, 08:19 PM To answer the "what movie" question about the spooks and ghouls, it was "Tickle Me" (no Elmo. LOL).
The Batman 11-18-2006, 12:11 AM Close. It was Tyrone F. Horneigh.
Well, that's the downside to being my age... half the time you can't even remember the things you do remember!

Old_McDonald 11-18-2006, 01:46 PM Hmmmm.....don't remember those but I do remember looking forward to my Friday night "horror fest" with Elvira as the hostess. Seeing her was better than seeing some of the flicks that were shown
Griffworks 11-18-2006, 02:44 PM Oh, yeah. I remember Elivira quite well. She's held up nicely over the years. er... no pun intended.
I still remember her movie, too. What she did with those tassles....
Simply amazing.
OK, bad Griff! No cookie for you!
