QUOTES FROM OLD THREAD:

Building Update:

Well it looks like it will work. We have given our plan to Gary Edwards and he is going to give me the final ok tomorrow. This project is going to take some work but we can get it done. We are going to check around for materials the next couple of days and we really would like to start working on this this week. The first process is we need to do the name change which Eric said was $80. JR, Scott, and I chipped in $10 a piece if we can get a few more people to do the same we can hopefully get the name changed this week. I will let everyone know the verdict from Gary tomorrow and when we are going to work on this again. If anyone has any questions let me know.

I hope the guys that went to Barre can bring home some trophies!! Cory I hope you can just bring the car home in one piece! Later

Trevor

yep, we were there for a couple of hours anyhow. the club and mr. edwards discussed the best plan for the removall of the concrete wall and put in place a steel culumn. sounds easy but it will be complicated process that started with planning and will take some man hours to complete. i don't wanna scare anyone with a work schedule, but all help will greatly be appreciated. pat n trevor wanna try and get up two temporary culumns up this week and saturday we will take down the concrete. anyone able to help em out it will help.

thanks to all those that came out today, thanks dash for sending pops... he was more usefull than you may have been, hope you get better soon bud!!

i'll be ready saturday when i get back from work, til then i'll keep in touch via satellight.

when u take the concrete out I may be able to get a dump trailer to haul it away if we got a place to get rid of it just let me know ahead of time so i can pick it up.

yeah, can we find used or cheaper stuff somewhere else? is this jeffords prices? does anyone know anyone at jeffords steel, either in postam or plattsburgh? did you tell them it's for a non-profit r/c organization? can someone go to the metal yard in massena? how about in cornwall, can someone go there n see?

i really wish i could, about the only thing i could do is call from here, if someone gives me the number... i will do that on my break or lunch time.

mitch, do you think you could go to cornwalls metal yards n check? i'll tell you where they are if you call me.

i really wanna do what we can to keep this building, it is prime location and has room outdoors for a dirt track or two.

the 8x8 has to be four feet four inches long, the 10x10 has to be eleven and a half feet long.

we need to know if mr edwards gets the OK to do this work as well, i hope so!

PHP
11-14-2006, 07:59 AM
This is Jeffords price, I called Massena Metal and they said to call back today they would send someone to the yard yesterday to see if there is anything like what we want, Being a Non profit doesnt matter to jeffords, they will still sell it for the same price, unless something is found some where else, Remember we are at war, metal is expensive.

Building Update:

Sorry guys for the delay. I talked to Gary a couple times yesterday and he brought our plans to the town engineer and then the village engineer and they both said the plans look good. They just want to make sure the 10" I-beam is sufficient. He said he will call me today with the final answer. I also talked to him about the rent and he said he won't make us pay until the work in the building is done. So basically our rent will start on December 1st and we can still work in there for the rest of November. I will post when I have the final ok. Thanks.

Building Update:

I heard from Gary Edwards today and we got the ok for the design on our plans. The only thing Gary said was the beam had to be W10X33? I don't know what that means but maybe someone does. He did up the lease and is getting final ok tonight at the board meeting and we will be all set. I will update tomorrow after I talk to Gary. Thanks

Just to let you know a 10x33 beam is way to much overkill, I got a engenering book and it rates a 10x 10 to support 7 tons a 10 x 33 will support 30 ton, and the price of a 33x10 is expensive and to big for us to deal with without a crane, Ask Jr, he works with steal everyday!

The only thing Gary said was the beam had to be W10X33? I don't know what that means but maybe someone does.

I'm a structural engineer in MA and I just thought I'd answer your question about the W10x33. W10x33...is an I beam. The W indicates Wide Flange, the 10 indicates approximate depth in inches, 33 indicates weight in pounds per linear ft. In this case, the W10x33 is an I-beam, with 9.75 inch depth, flange width of 8 inches, flange thickness of 7/16 inch, web thickness of 5/16 inch, and weighs approximately 33 pounds per linear foot. This may or may not be heavier than a 10x10 box tube...it would depend on the wall thickness of the tube. In any case, a comparable 10x10 to your W10x33 would be in the same weight range 33-40 lbs/ft. I don't know if either is more readily available, but steel is extremely hard to get no matter where you are or who you are. Hope that helps.

racing widow is right about the 10x33 I beam.

i wanna clear this up as well...what i meant about stating the fact that we are a nonprofit organization is that maybe we can get a deal on something, if we talk to the right person and tell them that we are trying to do, something that will benifit the community in a positive way and promote a constructive activity for the young people in our area.
i raised money when i opened the harte haven shop by asking buisinesses to addvertise, they gladly were able to help out once i explained what i was offering to the community... "it's more than just an r/c track".
if we keep this in mind when we approach someone or some buisiness we might get a little more co-opperation than a straight out buisiness attitude. you might be... you will be supprised as to what you get in results 7 out of 10 times.

this being said... someone will and has offered something cheaper than buying new. i was offered a 12" I-beam by someone who in our area.

friday i will hear more on the cost of the 12"er'.

RacingWidow00
11-16-2006, 05:25 PM
Just because it's 12" does not mean the beam will have the same or better load capacity as a W10x33...It will have to go through your town engineer for approval.

mhawk11
11-16-2006, 05:34 PM
no problem, we will get approval before we do any work at all, as we have been doing up to now.

thanks fer tha help

Building Update:

Talked to Gary Edwards this morning and everything is set with the board. As soon as he gets the lease back from the lawyers office he will let us know and we can go from there. I have the number to the village engineer if someone wants to give him a call and go over the beam issue. Thats all for now.

Building Update:

We have an issue!!! Gary Edwards just gave me a call this afternoon and let me know that he just received an offer from someone to purchase the building and the entire corner lot. We will have to wait for now to see what happens. Please continue to look for buildings as this one may no longer be an option because we haven't signed a lease yet. I will keep everyone informed as I hear more. Thanks

I was just thinking how you guys moved a permanent hobby shop to a new location, then built a banked oval track, all in what, a week or 2. That's impressive. Wish I could be up there more to help. Stupid idea proably but I wonder if a roll out track is an option, the one at the norfolk high school was fun, man that was back in the day.

Thanks Neil, We do have a option for a roll out track, but we are looking at a new lead, sofar there is potential, I just didnt want to put the time into a rollaway track when we were working on a permanent building. If this falls through we will be looking into a port-a-track.
