I recently upgraded to Win XP, and also updated various programs such as my Acrobat Reader. Now when I try to open a PDF file link in the forums, or on websites, I get the message,
"Cannot use Adobe Reader to view PDF in your web browser"

Is this a Firefox thing, or a settings thing, or something else? I can open PDF files OK in IE.

Any advise?

alot of the times, that can be because you have two versions of adobe acrobat running on your machine, a version 6 and a version 7. now, without knowing details, or what version of acrobat you are running... that is one thing you can check.

also, one problem, because you mentioned you "upgraded to winxp" is the plugin never transferred properly. you can try reloading adobe acrobat or....

Try the following

Close FireFox ,Copy nppdf32.dll from the adobe reader dir (with default install, It should be found here: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\Browser)

Paste it in your plug-ins dir, overwriting the one that is there (with default install, the plug-in dir is here: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins
restart Firefox and try it out

Thanks for the help, Mits. It took me awhile to get to it an try it, but a combination of most everything you mentioned worked. The final piece of the puzzle was copying the dll to the plug-in directory. It's working great in both IE and Firefox now.
Thanks!

Firefox has always had issues with acrobat, from either loading the plugin or loading the PDF itself. There are other options for managing PDF's in Firefox. Goto mozilla's extensions page and look for PDF Download. This will enable you to download the PDF for later use or view it directly in your browser.
