CEFX Raceway in Westland, Mi hosted the first leg of the BSR Racing Tires Brushless Oval Tour. Race number 1 the “Showdown in Motown” would see almost 70 drivers representing 8 different states battle is out for there first BRL wins.
After earlier in the week announcing a point fund expected to top the $5000 mark, an All Star Event that will payout in excess of $1000 and a unique qualifying format the new all brushless series made it’s much anticipated debut. Drivers would first compete in 4 rounds of qualifying that would see the Fast 5 in each division locked in the A main. Two more drivers would transfer form the B and the final position would be filled by the ”Lucky Dog” the driver who turned the fastest time in a lower main.
Fast 5 Dash
The first mains up on Sunday afternoon where the Fast 5 Dashes. The top 5 drivers were locked into the A-mains but would have to do battle for 25 laps to determine there grid positions for the A final to be held later in the day.
Pro Modified was up first and saw (TQ) Josh Cyrul lead all 25 laps and take the win in his new CEFX oval chassis. Corey Heft held on for second with Jason Hack the big gainer moving up two spots on the grid from 5th to 3rd starting position for the final race.
The 13.5 Sportsman Stock class was up next and would see TQ Dave Whitesel check out leading wire to wire. Jason Crist would hold on to second and Bob Hendry along with Eric Knapp would be the beneficiary of Rob Mulvaney’s misfortune and each move up a spot on the starting grid.
The Pro 4300 class would see the biggest shake up with the top 3 cars involved in an early accident. Greg Dean drove all the way from 5th to the lead spot before giving in to the pressure from Hyperdrive racer Frank Ulbrik. Frank would hold on for the win and would be flanked by Dean on the front row for the A final. Track owner Josh Cyrul would start 3rd and TQ Keith Racknor would have to come from a second row outside starting position to have a shot at the A- Main win.
Lower Mains
At a BRL race the B mains are very important with top two driver bumping up to the A Final. This year an innovative rules twist allows the third place driver to also have a shot at the A via the Lucky Dog rule. The driver who turns the fastest time in any lower main moves on to the A final.
Pro Mod would see Cincinnati driver Joe Rutherford take the win with long haul award winner Kevin Perry from Springfield, MO finishing second. Iowa’s Matt Gansen wound up third and would take the Lucky Dog and start last on the grid for the A- Final
13.5 Sportsman Stock B main would see Mike Beach in car #88 edge out the 65 year young veteran Butch Beebe for the win. Scott Nestle finished third and posted a time that held up to the assault of C-Main winner & young gun “Quick” Nick Sackett to take the Lucky Dog slot in the A.
The Pro 4300 B-main would see John Zubak take his KSG chassis to the front and hold onto a 3 second advantage over second place finisher and Oshkosh, WI driver Mike Makus in the all black #85. With a shot a the Lucky Dog the third place battle saw some great racing between BSR owner John Foister and Michigan driver Mike Kingsley. Kingsley made a late inside pass and went on take third position posting a time of 78 5.00. Mike would have to sit and watch & wonder if anyone in the next 4 mains was going to beat his time and bump him out of the Lucky Dog spot. He survived the F and E mains but was sweating bullets watching the D main as Hays Reeling Jr driving the silver Lefthander R/C sponsored #4 was on pace to match his time. Hays opened up a commanding lead but in the third minute a tangle with a lapped car the cost him the precious seconds he needed to knock Kingsley out of the A. Hays would finish posting a run of 78 5.01.
The C-Main would see Mike’s bubble burst almost immediately as the top 6 cars lead by Corey Heft in the Hefty Cells #12 launch out on a fast 81 lap pace. Jason Hack (adopted grandson of Bill Sullvan) and Michigan driver Dave Zipp would produce a great mid race battle sometimes seeing them work three wide in traffic before Zipp would eventually pull away for second. Heft would hold on and post a strong 80 lap run and take the Lucky Dog pass onto the A.
A-Mains
Pro Mod took center stage for the first A-main of the day. TQ and dash winner Josh Cyrul in his bright yellow #14 CEFX chassis blasted off from the pole and opened up a 10 car length lead over second place Corey Heft. Iowa’s Danny Bartholomew in the pink KSG #18 was up to 3rd before hard contact with turn 3 wall ended his day. Jason Hack and Sonny Brown both driving Custom Works chassis would move into 3rd and 4th. Hack would later slip off two and spin causing brief contact with Brown and ending his day. Josh would maintain a comfortable lead and go on to take a two second win over Heft. Sonny Brown would finish third, Joe Ruthrerford fourth and Matt Gansen took advantage of his Lucky Dog transfer to bring the #2 Maverick ride home in fifth.
13.5 Sportsman Stock was up next. Dave Whitesel (TQ) and owner of Leading Edge race cars would lead early followed by team mate Jason Crist in the black #08, and Illinois Rob Mulveney in the white Custom Works #4r. Crist appearing to have the quicker car closed in on the back of Whitesel and made and inside move off of turn 4 to take the lead early in the race. Mulvaney followed into second before and turn 1 tangle with a spinning car would drop him to third. A mid race battle developed for 4th between Butch Beebe and Indiana driver Eric Knapp. Knapp would eventually win the battle and bring the blue and white #10 home in fourth. Crist pulled away untouched taking the win by almost a full lap over Whitesel and third place finishing Mulvaney.
Pro 4300 was up for what was sure to be the most exciting main of the day. Frank Ulbrik in the white #13 lead early before a lap 5 tangle with the crashed car of Greg Dean would knock him to the tail end of the lead lap. The accident allowed the (TQ ) Keith Racknor in his black Leading Edge #8 to assume the top spot with a hard charging Josh Cyrul and BSR driver Kevin Koback just a few car length behind. Through the mid part of the race Racknor began stretch his lead over the #14 of Cyrul who had pulled away four car lengths from Koback.. After the early crash the hard charging Ulbrik moved past Zubak, Makus and Heft to pull himself back into 4th just a few seconds behind the leaders. In the last minute Cyrul closed the gap to just a car length trying to force Racknor into a mistake. With less then 30 seconds on the clock Racknor opened the door in turn 3 and Cyrul made the inside move for the lead. Coming off turn 4 Racknor made a crossover maneuver taking the inside line down the front straight, the two would come together fighting for the same piece of real estate entering turn one sending Josh out of the groove and allowing Koback to move into second. Josh would recover and in the last few laps move past Koback but wind up second behind the veteran Racknor who notched his first major Brushless win.
Awards were presented and a great weekend of racing was wrapped up by 3pm. Many racers who were skeptical at the beginning of the weekend about the new league and its innovative race format left knowing they were a part of something special and can’t wait for the next race.
The BSR Tour moves on to Vinton Iowa for the Lefthander R/C Hawkeye Classic on November 18th and 19th. The IROAR Club is in the heart of Brushless country and we expect this to one of the biggest events on the tour. Come on out and be a part of the fun.
