View Full Version : Need help finding Briggs engine
accutron 10-25-2006, 02:59 AM Hello everyone,
I was given a brand new Coleman Powermate generator with a seized 6 hp Briggs motor. The previous owner brought it home, put gas in it but no oil. I am trying to locate a new engine but am coming up with nothing. The model is 120412, type 0137 e1, date code 021210 fe. I would also like to know what size to bore the cylinder for a .030 over piston. Briggs has been no help as they tell me to call Coleman & Coleman tells me to call Briggs lol. Being a machinist, I would like to try to bore the cyl. just to see if it will clean up. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Tom
30yearTech 10-25-2006, 07:57 AM Is the cylinder even damaged? Most of the time when an engine is run under load with no oil, the engine seizes on the crankshaft journals, usually on the rod or flywheel side, as the pto side should have a bearing. Newer engines should have a cast iron bore and may only require a new piston. Flywheel side for your engine shows a replaceable bushing.
Replacement engine shows to be model 121312 type 0026
I could not find a shortblock listing for this engine.
jetrail 10-25-2006, 09:44 AM is this the motor

but i think you should try to see if you can get the motor free'd up first , i would honestly soak the cylinder , and get the top off and turn it reverse rotation , alot of tines they will free up and run again , and its worth a shot before you spend money on another motor

No, that engine does not have the same crankshaft as the one he has on the generator.
accutron 10-25-2006, 02:06 PM Thanks for the quick replies. I have the engine apart & the crank is fine. There is a lot of piston material stuck to the cylinder though. I get a lot of "play" time @ work, so I would like to put it in our cnc boring mill & see if it cleans up but I need to know bore diameters for oversize pistons. I figure the block is junk as is so why not try to bore it & see what happens. Thanks again, Tom
30yearTech 10-25-2006, 03:50 PM You can probably just clean up any aluminum from the bore with a cylinder hone. But it sounds like you really want to punch this block out. A 120000 series horizontal shaft OHV engine shows the standard bore to be 2.6875 - 2.6885 hope this helps you out.
accutron 10-26-2006, 02:30 AM 30yeartech,
The bore has a lot of material from the skirt melted to it on the thrust side & to get it out I will have to take a cut. The rest of the bore is scored pretty good too. If I had an oversize piston, could I just use the same clearance as on the standard bore/piston combination?
30yearTech 10-26-2006, 09:00 AM Yes, Briggs shows oversize pistons available in .010", .020" and .030".
accutron 11-02-2006, 02:13 PM Hello everyone,
I just got my parts from Briggs in only two days after my order. A .020 over piston kit with rings pin & lock, con. rod, complete gasket set & repair manual for about $100. If anyone needs repair info on a single cylinder ohv engine from manual # 272147 let me know. I would be glad to help out. If this works, I will have a new 3500 watt generator for about $100. Tom
