View Full Version : Arena, the best yet!
falcondesigns 10-24-2006, 01:17 AM I just watched this episode last night and I must say it was the best one yet.Dont know what happen to the first few episodes but the colors in this one look like Technicolor and the effects were great. They're getting better at it.Alexander
ClubTepes 10-24-2006, 02:26 AM For some reason, my station WXYZ Detroit, started the episode 30min early. So I missed of course the first half hour. What happened?:jest:
Any good effects?
scotpens 10-24-2006, 03:03 AM Missed about the first ten minutes, but the color did look less oversaturated than in some of the earlier eps. No new FX that I could spot, except for the usual CGI Enterprise flybys and a subtle "twinkly" effect around the Metron when he makes his appearance at the end of the episode. There's not a whole lot more they could have done except maybe replace the guy in the cheesy lizard suit with a cheesy computer-generated Gorn! And then where would the fun be?
ClubTepes 10-24-2006, 03:12 AM In case no one noticed, they made the Gorn's eyes blink.
I freeze framed a blink, it looked pretty good.
John P 10-24-2006, 07:44 AM Yeah, that was the big addition - two blinks. Whoop de do.
NBC had the show listed as starting at 2:35AM, so I set the VCR for 2:30. Apparently, it started at 2:28, 'cause I came in just before the beam-down to Cestus III.

The '"twinkly" effect around the Metron' was in the original. It was due to lens flare from sunlight hitting the highly reflective garment the actress was wearing.
I must say that I'm glad they didn't replace the Gorn with a CGI version. I liked the fact that they kept him and just put in a few winks ;)
The phaser and photon effects added were really great. The ship still looks a bit cartoonish for my taste but they're getting better with each episode it seems.
jbond 10-24-2006, 01:15 PM If you watched the syndication preview for this episode, they cut out two really cool shots--one of the Enterprise leaving in pursuit of the Gorn ship and firing its impulse engines to boost it out of orbit (quite a dynamic shot), and one panning up the side of the Enterprise as it faces off against the Gorn ship after both have been incapacitated by the Metrons. I think this shot may have given a slightly better look at the Gorn ship too. Now we won't see those shots until whatever DVDs they make of this series come out!

You know, there are plenty of times when I make mistakes and deserve to be doubted but this ain't one of them. I chose the word "actress" very carefully. ;)
I was wondering while watching "Arena" if they'd done the old trick of using a female as an alien but with a male voice as they did with the Talosians and sure enough, they did. I noted the name, Carole Shelyne in the credits as the Metron. Vic Perrin provided the voice. You can confirm that Carole Shelyne is indeed a female at this site: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0791418/
Griffworks 10-24-2006, 05:41 PM And there you have it. I guess there's a lesson to be learned here, as well: it helps to research stuff. Don't feel bad, JGG! I've done it all too often myself. Stuff happens, as the saying goes.... :drunk:

I stand corrected sir.
I aplogize. :(

I agree. Like the new weapons. Ship is still too cartoonish. I don't know why this bugs me so much. It's just a TV show, after all. But it's this ... icon from my youth that they're messing with. :)

Star Trek was into "nontraditional" casting before it was fashionable! Like having a child actor in a role where you'd expect to see an adult midget.
BTW, these days Clint Howard doesn't need the bald cap.

PerfesserCoffee 10-25-2006, 08:29 AM I stand corrected sir.
I apologize. :(
You are indeed a gentleman, sir, however there is no need to apologize. We're just exchanging information here, after all.
I used to think it was a man playing the role, too, but there always seemed something not quite right about "him." It just dawned on me the other day to check out the credits to see if it were a woman playing the role.
Life: one steep learning curve! :freak:
