View Full Version : Star Trek Encounters game - for PS2
Scorpitat 10-22-2006, 12:37 PM If ya like Trek, I'd advise getting the new one out, called "Star Trek - Encounters", for the PS2. WallyMart has it for $14.99, and I've been playing it for a few days now.
You can pick your eras to play in, ( after you work thru them all), and basically you helm starships from the shows, fighting off Xindi, Klingons, Orion Pirates, Gorn, etc.... You can delegate ship power to your shields, weapons, engines, sensors, etc., and you get missions to complete, loosely based on the shows and movies.
I just completed the "Enterprise" Missions, and it was a hoot. I had to fight off Xindi, and destroy the spheres and Xindi superweapon! It was cool!
You can play against human opponents, as well as play wave levels, where wave upon wave of ships attack you.
Really cool for the price, and graphics and sound are great. Narration is by Shatner, and the ships look wonderful. I plan on getting the PSP version which comes out this week, called "Star Trek - Tactical Assault".
Just wanted to let ya all know about it. Hope ya enjoy it!
"Boldly GO!"
Sincerely, Scorp.
Looks great (and OT, so does the Justice League one). What month is considered "Fall"?
Dave Hussey 10-23-2006, 07:27 AM that game is on my list to get!

JamesDFarrow 10-23-2006, 11:16 AM Will PS2 games play on PS3?
I gather the answer is no but just though I'd ask.
James :)
Dave Hussey 10-23-2006, 11:41 AM I understood that PS2 games would play on PS3. Otherwise, current PS2 owners would be highly resistant to upgrading to the new PS3 platform.

JamesDFarrow 10-23-2006, 12:21 PM Thanks!
They just announced here on the News that PS3 will be about $700 CDN so I think I will pass. Unless I win the lottery that is. LOL!
Anyway, that Trek game sounds good. Better that the one I had for XBox which was terrible.
James :)
wlemonds 10-23-2006, 01:06 PM God, I just could not like that game. I rented it from Gamefly. I got frustrated with the part where you have to use your sensors to find the Xindi trail.
Personally, I'm waiting for Star Trek : Legacy. It'll be on PC and the XBOX 360.

Prince of Styrene II 10-23-2006, 05:47 PM I think I saw it this weekend at EB Games.
PhilipMarlowe 10-23-2006, 06:49 PM I grabbed a copy at K-mart tonight, at $14.99 it was a no brainer. I look forward to checking it out!
I'll be getting it tomorrow. I wonder if you can play each other online?? All your bases will be belonging to me!!!
Ohio_Southpaw 10-24-2006, 08:13 AM Picked my copy up last night, only got to play it for about an hour. One thing I really like is you actually have Z-axis control.

I tried it for an hour last night too, and spent the last fifty minutes trying to fly thru 40 rings in 2 minutes. I'm up to 37 :freak:
I'll be glad to get out of the Enterprise level and play the "classic" Trek missions.

I hear you! I flew in circles alot and hit asteroids.... Will attempt to defeat my mortal enemy "The Rings" tonight!
Ummmmm, You guys know I love ya and all, but the game, so far, is a dog. The graphics are sub par. Flight controls make you think you're flying a fighter, not a starship. Flying through rings??? I just am underwhelmed at this point. I would think that in skirmishes you could use any ship, but no. Kinda lame

Nothing wrong with having to unlock the other ships in upper levels. Makes me want to look for the cheat codes soon. I agree with the flight controls, and I would prefer to have a bridge view, I'd probably have better control. The Z-axis indicators are hard to see at times. I like it. The graphics are ok for what you are paying for.
Am I missing something in the Xindi Superweapon level? I'm at the 'follow the warp signature' stage and I find a glowing/sparkling gas cloud and as I sweep with my targeting scanners I can see 'empty' areas (scanner wedge changes color) but for the life of me I cannot find any trails.... what am I missing or not seeing? The yellow indicator reticle always leads me back to the cloud. I didn't have much time with it last night, so hopefully tonight will be more revealing.

Hope you had better luck than I did, I spent another hour flying thru the rings. I got to 38, twice. I'm with Rich, I hope somebody post some cheat codes soon to unlock the other ships and missions, I'm getting real sick of the NX.

I don't hate it, yet, but it is a little aggravating. And I do hate videogames that won't allow you to skip the cut scenes, especially in levels where they know you're going to be repeating a lot.
I was really looking forward to this game. I'll get my kid to get me through the stupid rings.

It took me over an hour to get through the rings.. I'd get to 38 over and over again just as I ran out of time... finally beat it though and moved on from there.

Divert all the power to the engines that you can..
Here's how bad it is for me. If I have to do, well, I'm not that in to it. Flying through rings is WW1 stuff, I expected more, yes, even at this price.

It's a training level to get you familiar with the flight characteristics of the ship and moving in +/- Z-axis instead of "two-dimensional" thinking... It's a pain, but at this point, since I can't find any cheat codes yet... Ya gotta do it.
I prefer to go to skirmish mode and learn to fly. Hoops, nope, if my kid doesn't do it, it ain't gonna get done. The game isn't worth me investing that amount of time.
Scorpitat 10-25-2006, 08:54 PM To follow the Xindi "warp trails", you need to follow the trail in the direction it is pointing, and see if you can find the "next" trail almost on the same heading. Kinda like looking for a trail of breadcrumbs. Keep scanning back to the last trail you passed though. If it starts to deteriorate, you "lose" the trail, and have to start over.
Alot of the "breadcrumbs" are at the very edge of your sensor sweep, so make sure you boost up your sensors.
Jeez, I thought you guys liked challenges. You mean this paultry little 15 dollar game has you all frazzled ALREADY?? ( Ducking, just in time to avoid the hurled x-acto knives and model glue tubes being throw at me. :snicker: )
Once ya get past the Xindi, you get to take on Klingons, and some of them are even cloaked. Ya even have to help out a poor disabled Vulcan ship. And guys, the next ship after the NX-01 is the Enterprise A!!!!! Come on guys, you can do it! If I find any cheatcodes, I'll post em for yas.
Best of luck!
Sincerely,
Scorp.
"Boldly GO!"
I love challenges. I also like the reward to be in line with the level of the challenge. Have fun, enjoy the game. It's not for me.
