i have a tecuseh 6.5h/p lev engine with mechanical compression release. i broke it and want to know if it will still run without it. it appears i have to replace the whole cam shaft or is the part available by itself. any help appreciated

Yep, you have to replace the camshaft if you want the compression release to work, individual parts for the cam are not available.
Yes it will still work without the release, but it will require a little more effort when you pull the rope to start it. If it is an electric start model the starter motor may have a problem starting it.
