View Full Version : Caster so many questions.........
Ginsu 10-17-2006, 09:57 PM I have the new CRC Razor 2 12th scale oval car......it comes with the standard AE front end. I have several questions regarding caster....first what degree blocks are recommended for carpet? 0, 5 or 10 degree...secondly how do you know how many shims to put in front of and behind the castor blocks....and what is more confusing is that I thought the castor blocks themselfs determined the amount of castor.......so why does shimming it affect caster and HOW do you determine the amount (the degree) of castor by shims....do they make a gauge? Thanks to anyone who can answer this..... :confused: :thumbsup:
briano_72 10-17-2006, 10:16 PM im not a set up expert by any means, but my 12th scale oval car and my l4 has the right arm shims in the front and the left arm shims in the rear.
Mike OBrien 10-17-2006, 10:38 PM for oval what you want to do is run the 0 deg blocks.... 2 shims in front of the block is 0 deg caster ... with the shims split one in front and one in back is 2 deg caster ..... and both shims in back is 4 deg of caster... a good starting point for oval is 0 deg on the left front and 2 deg on the right front
with more caster in the car it will turn in harder and turn less comming out
or we call it (push) and with less caster it will not turn in as hard and have more turn comming off

What I find confusing is that no where in the front end instructions does it tell you about shims or what degree caster they make. It just says that the plastic blocks are marked 0,5 and 10.........so if you did not tell me I would not have known.....
MIKE VALENTINE 10-18-2006, 09:50 AM The 0, 5, and 10 degree castor blocks, don't refer to the amount of castor. It is just referring to the different amount of angle the upper a-arm has in relationship to the lower a-arm.

Manning 10-18-2006, 09:02 PM 2 shims in front may be slightly negative caster. My cars are about 1/2 negative with the both shims in front.....
Take the tires off, lay the chassis on something flat, and sight along the kingpin and something square (bottle of tire sauce or motor spray).
McLin 10-18-2006, 10:11 PM If you measure caster with the chassis sitting on something flat and then put the tires back on, the chassis will (should) have a slight angle towards the front. This will decrease your reading by what ever angle the chassis is.
Some of you may have read this but since I wrote it I have come up with a couple of small improvements but the tool still works the same way.

What I would really like to know is do you guys think this is a tool worth producing and marketing? Or, if you like it, would you rather try to make it yourself?

I'd like to see someone make a good caster tool. If it didn't cost and arm and a leg I'd definitly buy one.
The Jet 10-18-2006, 11:34 PM Don't rely on the shims giving you the amount of castor they say they will. Machine tolerences have them out of whack, Like Manning said, use your eyeball :thumbsup: , remove your wheels and look at your kingpin from the side, in relation the chassis. Left side should be 90* to the chassis, right side maybe 2* rearward, that's a good place to start.

Caster and camber are 2 chassis tuning tools that are easy to understand , but rarely set correctly.

Looks very good. I would think there would be a market since there is NOTHING like that out there now.....thanks

Also
The more castor you run the more stabil the car will be in the straight, The less castor will make the car want to wonder
And the more Split you run the better the car will rotate threw the turn, but if you get to much split you will lose foward bite in the rear.
