View Full Version : Alternate next gen theme - horrible!
I found this on youtube - I'm really glad they didn't go with this - it sounds like a swashbuckling adventure!

jheilman 10-16-2006, 09:37 PM Thanks for those. I believe I have both of the themes on CD, but I have never seen the original edit of the second pilot. I have only had those missing bits described. Why don't we get that version as a DVD extra? Maybe no surviving film elements?
Lloyd Collins 10-16-2006, 09:56 PM I would prefer any them for NG, than the STMP theme. I like the theme, as having the CD for years.

IIRC, the only surviving print is in the Smithsonian Institution.
Good thing they dropped Kirk's scientifically vague opening voice-over, which makes it sound like he doesn't know the difference between the solar system and the galaxy! And that generic adventure music over the closing credits.
John P 10-17-2006, 07:47 AM I've never been exactly happy they stole the TMP theme for TNG, though. I'd have preferred something original. Trek really does have a record of crappy opening themes. Except for the original, I haven't really liked any of them.
scotpens 10-17-2006, 04:44 PM I always thought the ST:TMP/Next Gen theme sounded a bit too martial (though it's good for parades and football halftime shows). The Voyager theme sounds to me like a hymn or a national anthem. Has anyone written lyrics to it? The original TOS theme always reminded me a bit of Cole Porter's "Begin the Beguine." And DS9 -- did it have music?

A friend of mine did once, but they're not very complimentary. :D
spe130 10-18-2006, 01:42 AM I've always thought that the Voyager theme had a refrain in it borrowed from the 60s classic "Silence is Golden."
John O 10-19-2006, 07:37 AM The Voyager theme sounds to me like a hymn or a national anthem. Funny thing about the Voyager theme was that if I whistled it, it reminded me of a lulaby. For what it was, I liked the Voyager theme and the openning titles for that matter too. Ah well, that the show itself wasn't as good. Not to start off on a Voyager tangent, but the show really should have been more like Trek meets Farscape. Anyway, I thought Voyager's was the 2nd best of the modern Trek themes (including movies), TMP being the first - both Goldsmith, how bad could they be?

razorwyre1 10-19-2006, 08:25 AM this alternate theme sounds like the TMP theme turned upside down. it has the same pacing and for lack of a better term syntax. it was pretty obvious that roddenberry went to goldsmith and said asked for "something like you wrote for the first movie"... then when it was delivered roddenberry and tptb said "nah lets go with the original one"
terryr 10-19-2006, 11:20 AM Enterprise is the theme that I can't stand. 1970's pop rock.
I heard the original theme from the 60's Thunderbirds. It has vocals, and cheeese.
jbond 10-19-2006, 01:33 PM The alternate TNG theme was written by Dennis McCarthy, not Goldsmith; Goldsmith was never approached to write the TNG theme as far as I know. McCarthy took his shot, they didn't like it and went with Goldsmith's movie theme.
scotpens 10-19-2006, 11:00 PM And don’t forget the memorable lyrics to the TOS theme, written by none other than the Great Bird of the Galaxy himself:
Beyond
The rim of the star-light
My love
Is wand’ring in star-flight
I know
He'll find in star-clustered reaches
Love,
Strange love a star woman teaches.
I know
His journey ends never
His star trek
Will go on forever.
But tell him
While he wanders his starry sea
Remember, remember me.
Never mind that the lyrics were never heard in the series — G.R. only wrote them so he could split the music royalties with Alexander Courage as "co-composer" of the theme. A weaselly thing to do, IMO.
Nova Designs 10-19-2006, 11:26 PM Wow, that has to be one of the worst TV show themes ever written! Thank god they didn't use it.
BTW, I happend to like Voyager's theme and the second version of the DS9 theme was good too.
Enterprise.... WTF!
Richard Compton 10-20-2006, 01:31 AM I have no problem admitting that I took the time to learn the Enterprise lyrics so I could sing along. :)
