View Full Version : I think it's the rims......

There are two castings I just can't seem to get past, the Gold GTO stands out as one and the other is the custom Mustang with solid gold rims. I think for me it's the rims more than the "custom" because there are others in the series I love. It sounds like others may feel the same way at least about the gold GTO.

I understand the need for variation and different strokes and all but it sounds like most of the GL core group still isn't ready for the dub, low profile tire scene yet so here are some alternatives perhaps......

1. Not sure these are to the right scale but if so, use the IRL wheels on the Mustang for a SCCA version with even proper weekend race markings and stickers pad printed in place. For the gold GTO place the IRL rims/tires on the rear and steelies on the front for a drag strip version. Change the stance even to a more "gasser" look if needed to fit.

2. Two tone the rims not making them appear so "22 inch" seems like all the black/chrome and other two color rims scale down the look of the solid color rims.

3. Customize the car as it would have been done in 1970 rather than by Chip Foose in 2006. Meaning, Centerlines, Keystone, Cragar etc.

4. Do a Tempest version!

Others?:)

I for one don't mind the look of the Golden Goat. Though, I do like the looks of the same rims on the Mustang in chrome!

YES! Classic custom rims on classic cars. I just don't like the look or appearance of 22" rims period. Maybe it's my age showing because they remind me of covered wagon wheels, or it's the fact they can't take a curb or pot-hole, or that they just plain look dorky - but I can't wait until they go the way of 'spinners'. Oh yeah, and the reeeeeeally make sense on SUV's :drunk:

Look back at old photos of cars in the 60's and early 70's and I bet you will find a lot more 5 spoked American Style rims than the ones you mentioned. I liked the gold rims on the Mustang except: yes they are too big; and the gold spokes centers are ok ( used to have flowered Americans like that) but they should have made the outer lip chrome color.
