View Full Version : General Oval Question
worm24381 10-13-2006, 11:08 PM Hello everybody I have been reading for the last week this is my first post. I really want to get into this oval r/c racing but it seems a little overwhelming. I live in fancy gap va. the first thing is Im finding it hard to find a track close by.would like to race indoor and outdoor.
I will be going to easly,sc to carolina rc sat. I was thinking about buying there rtr kit so I could start racing sat. and if things go well I'll give that kit to my son and upgrade to another car. Do they still run the legend cars.
To get to the point I guess what I'm asking is for some advice on how to get started like battery selection, motors, chargers ect...
Is there any videos or books i could buy. thanks
Tony
latemodel100 10-13-2006, 11:27 PM From what you have read, you can tell its all up to you really on what you want to buy and whats best for your needs to get into this Oval Community........
Tracks close to you, are going to be hard to come by for oval but they are there within 2-3 hours.......
I mean I know of tracks in NC SC and VA not to mention Eastern TN and Eastern KY that run oval, so finding one is not hard just finding what they run and how they conduct there shows is key, I mean you dont want to get the RTR if only one track is running it, you know what I mean.......
You can find alot of info in the Track Discussions page about tracks, adn your in ARCOR and RC-Oval country down there, so go to the ARCOR website and and the RC-Oval website and they can direct you to tracks, but off the top of my head I know of Coopers near Martinsville, VA, Sandhills Raceway alittle south of Raleigh, NC, a coupld of tracks clsoe to the Charlotte Area, adn of course the track you are going too are all good tracks.................
Motor, battery and chassis wise will all be determined from what they all have to offer in the way of classes............
Just about all products made for oval these days is good, batteries are top notch adn motors are second to none regardless of who makes them.......
Chassis's are a different story all are great and top notch just depends on the tunability of the car...... They are all fast and can be fast, some offer more "bling bling" and some offer more tuning options than others...........

And thats just a few of the ones that I know of::::::::::::
Motors and batteries are the same way alot of builders and matchers out there.......
ASK AROUND AT THE TRACKS YOU WILL BE AT MORE OFTEN THEN NOT AND SEE WHAT THEY ARE USING AND WHAT CLASSES THEY HAVE TO OFFER.....
HOPE THIS HELPS
Harold R 10-13-2006, 11:55 PM Hello Tony,
Honestly I have no clue where Fancy Gap is without looking it up. I also live in VA. and we have a great indoor carpet track in Gordansville VA. called Thunder Road.
Our stongest classes have been Spec, stock, and lately some 19t. The RTR car would definetly be the way to go from a cost stand point if there is a full field of them at the track you end up racing at. Second best beginners class would probably be spec. Best thing to do is find the track cloest to you and visit it. See what everyone is running and ask advice there.
Thunder Road will be running tomorrow and next week will be the ARCOR VA. State race. This would be a good time to come check things out if you would like. Thunder Road has a web site to check out. www.thunderroadrc.com
Ernie P. 10-14-2006, 12:02 AM You have about a three hour run to get to Thunder Road; but we'd be more than happy to see you. Check out the website, like Harold suggested. Mapquest shows it to be a pretty straight shot; but it's not next door. Thanks; Ernie P.

http://www.rc-oval.com/revolution_rtr.html I would think real hard about this car. It will help you hold the cost down in the beginning.
You also have great tracks in Asheville and Fox Mountain and of course Easley for the summer, paved racing.
Thunder Road is close to Charlottsville and they have a really nice indoor carpet track.
PM me if I can help you. Hope this helps.
Slider 10-14-2006, 08:45 AM Now that is a sweet package for a beginner or for a brake-out class. Glad to see a truley RTR.
The Jet 10-14-2006, 12:39 PM Yea, looks like a fiberglass G-FORCE, good start-up car.
Personally, I would look at the swap and sell here on hobbytalk, there's always someone selling a full on race ready setup for a decent price.
Ask yourself this...Are you ready to be SERIOUS and committed for years to come??? Because if you are, get equiptment you won't outgrow in a few months, that would just be a waste of money.
Good luck, and welcome to the "club" .

bush87 10-14-2006, 09:58 PM If you need any help with the tracks in NC, SC drop me a email. I run at easley, wish I would have seen your post earlier and I could have meet you today.
McLin 10-15-2006, 12:17 PM You will find a good class of that Revolution car racing at Easley as well and they have them in the hobby shop.
As far as moving up later, you can take that car right into the Spec class with NO changes at all. I have the one here that I did the article on and believe me, there is a big difference between "cheap" and "inexpensive". There is nothing cheap about this deal.
BTW the registration for the giveaway will close TODAY!
boatanchor48 10-15-2006, 01:24 PM coopers has both a indoor dirt oval and a outdoor blacktop oval, i think the blacktop oval season is over and the dirt track is just starting to get going for the winter

WHAT???
Thats exactely what I hear perspective NEW Racers say when they find out what it cost to get involved in this Hobby. This Complete package gives them the Oppurtunity to try the hobby without a huge investment.
Very enligtening qoute from McLin:
"If all of us don't stop saying what we think on this computer (where all that read it are ALREADY IN THE HOBBY) and start DOING SOMETHING to make it grow.......we will all be sitting here........typing on our computers about how good it USE TO BE."
TEAM_lost. 10-15-2006, 02:06 PM ya know you should tell people to acculy get a rtr, because they'll get a taste of rc, and if they like it they continue and race and have fun but if they dont like it oh well at least they didnt loose too much money, but some people say that if yours serious you NEED to buy EXPENSIVE equiptment or dont race, whats rc about??? "FUN" right well have it ive been racin for a while but havent spent more than 800$ over 4 years and have been competitive, so you DONT need to spen HUGE anountd of MONEY. so basicly if your starting just have "FUN"!! so flash i totaly agree with you!
TEAM_lost. 10-15-2006, 02:09 PM oh and btw worm if you want to have fun and start out in oval check your local track and see if they have a mini-t class... the mini-t is a 1/18 scale stadium truck and is "FUN" also this class can be very competitive but still "FUN" and "CHEAP" so you might want to try that and the best part is that after you race you can go home and "JUMP" it out in your drive way or even in your living room!!!!
go to www.teamlosi.com and look for the mini-t..... belive me you'll have fun and get a taste of oval...
McLin 10-16-2006, 07:07 PM WE HAVE A WINNER!
Congratulations to Lisa Harris! She is the official winner of the new Revolution RTR Pan Car that is produced by The Hobby Connection in Easley, South Carolina.
Lisa, your car will be shipped out this week……….CONGRATULATIONS! We hope that you will enjoy it.
Joey 3 10-17-2006, 05:35 PM I would go to some of the tracks that you plan on running at and talk to some of the guys their and see what most of them are doing, and see which way you want to go from there. For the most part you will find that most of the people will be more than happy to help you, and you may find a really good deal on a used setup to help you get started.

FLASH,
You lost me, what dont you understand???
Someone who wants to "TRY" the hobby, might be fine with the RTR kit, BUT, let's say sombody is dropping out of full size cars (which they have done for many years) and plan on doing this until they croak, maybe that person should get stuff they wont outgrow quickly.
Would you buy a computer that's cheap today, but won't perform to your needs in 6 months??? That's something you need to ask yourself ;) .
worm24381 10-17-2006, 09:49 PM Thanks for the info. I went to Carolina rc this past weekend and really enjoyed the show. everybody was friendly and answered any question that I had. I enjoyed it so much that I am going to buy my son one of the and we will be running there several weekends a month! It was almost 200 miles but that is doesnt bother me and that is several hours me and my family talking and sharing stories without the tv,computer ect..And thats priceless.
As a matter of fact I have been telling some coworkers and think one of them is coming with me next weekend and going to buy one too. I unserstand they will be an indoor carpet track to race at in Salisbury NC that is alot closer I would like to see this new track offer the RTR class I know several of my friends would do that they wouldnt have to drive so far and the initial exspense wouldnt be that bad.
I will also be buying a kit and building my own race car. This is going to be a hobby that I think I will really enjoy.
