The Tri-Clone Raceway, located in West Bend Wisconsin., will once again be the home of the 2006-07 USR/C Latemodel Series. The USR/C Latemodel Series is based on brushless 13.5 stock powered 1/10th pan cars with no wings and no changes made to the bodies. The elimination of wings and fully intact stockcar bodies, keep chassis setup at a premium. Race strategy ultimately out weighs pure speed.

The format consists of "lap" racing in both the heat races and the Mains. The A Main is 100 laps in length or longer. Each latemodel contest is started using a single file “rolling” start. The warm up laps and acceleration to full speed take the advantage of having (expensive) matched cells -out of the equation.

The US/RC management also throws in a few twists and turns which provide some drama and entertainment during the event. The rolling starts, "The Ultimate Challenge" for Top qualifiers to race from the very last position for the opportunity to gain additional championship points and the “inversion roll” of the dice for setting up the A main field, keep racers and fans alike talking about the US/RC Latemodel Series.

The formula provided a very competitive series in 2006. USR/C Latemodel racers completed 2,680 racing laps, there were 47 main event lead changes among seven different drivers, it was half a season before a repeat winner graced victory lane AND… 82% of the registered racers picked up a heat or main victory. You just can’t ask for better competition!

Make YOUR plans NOW to compete in the USR/C Latemodel Series in 2007. Check out the US/RC link at http://latemodel.triclone.net (http://latemodel.triclone.net/) for upcoming details.

Looking forward to seeing all the new competitors that raced latemodel in the summer. Dave is right, if your body was legal in the Tri Clone outdoor latemodel races, it is legal indoors.

Latemodel 100 "Thank you" for the compliment...the trip to the Tri Clone is worth the ride....we would love to have you come out and race.

Interested on what body style will lead the pack? DIRT Latemodel Vs a NASCAR Vs an ASA Latemodel. I have spoken to drivers that are building each and have strong reasons why they think they will be good.

I thought pnly late model type bodies were legal this past summer for the class.. is it an open body class now..

Reminder: The USR/C Latemodel "Indoor" Series and the Tri-Clones very own latemodel class "outdoor" program are independent of each other.

I believe the aero DIRT latemodel bodies were chosen outdoors for the needed downforce on the banking.

Indoors we have NASCAR, ASA and DIRT latemodel followers. Our decision was rather than alienate one group let's let them run what they like. The flat bullring should provide an even playing field. The cream will rise to the top and drivers wil be able to make their own decision to change over -or- work harder to make their car more competitive.

I've raced this format before, and I can assure you that it's a hoot! Lots of fun with close, competitive racing.

I just found out about this series, and am both dismayed and happy at just how far electric R/C has come. Got a late 80's Hyperdrive belt-drive with brush motor, 1200-1800 NiCads, and Novak SC with reverse in an old stock car body. Just found out a month ago that brushless motors finally came into use by reading an ad in an R/C mag in my chiropractors office (cool guy)! Don't tell me you can get 100-200 laps from ONE pack now!? Seriously?

This is true. We raced all of our 100 lappers on the Tri-Clone bullring with no problem. 200? mmmm not sure so we do a competition yellow at the 1/2 way mark of the Midwestern 200. Adds some drama to that mama.

Team Shoestring, is that you? My memory is fuzzy on you - I remember the Hyperdrive, and the hillarious Team Shoestring website, something about Everhard Faber, and someone named Nigel?

Anyway, come on out to the track one day - we'll be happy to show you around.

Hey Mr Mari. Good to hear from the 2005-06 Champ!!! Good luck with defending your title this season. What are your opinions, ideas, rants or the like relative to the racing we will see with the brushless set up this year in latemodel.

marig
11-17-2006, 11:58 PM
I think it will be more even as far as the power level everyone has (Duh, right?) So in that sense, things might end up being even more close than they were last year. We definitely had several drivers who were in the hunt to win any given heat race, and I expect a little more of that.

On the other hand, chassis setup and good driving will be even more important than before, as that will be the only way to get your car to have an edge in terms of lap times.

I think most drivers will enjoy wrenching on their chassis more than on their motors. I think by going brushless we probably cut in half (more or less) the amount of preparation we have to do for each race weekend. Thats a good thing in my book. I know it's added cost, but to me, it's an investment that gives me more time to enjoy my hobby. And I'm one of the guys that actually enjoyed working on my motors - dynoing, tweaking springs, different brush cuts and compounds, brush hood alignment, etc. But it really took a lot of time between races to do all that.

I'm coming out to the track tomorrow, so I hope to see folks out there.

marig

Well, for yesterday's race we had 15 cars in the Late Model class, which was a great turnout.

We had a few cars with late model "dirt" bodies, but the majority had NASCAR bodies. Of the NASCAR bodies, some had the rear panels cut out, and some did not.

I think the majority of cars had the brushless 13.5 motors, but there were definitely some 27T stock brushed motors in there.

I'm just saying all this to set up the fact that with all this diversity of body styles and motors, there were a few different cars that led the race. True, there were a few crashes in the beginning that mixed things up, but even so, it looked to me like there wasn't a single dominant combination of body style and motor. And with the longer format of the lap race (100 lap mains) you had more time to work your way back up towards the front if you did get in trouble. Like me. :-)

I'm not sure of the breakdown of who finished where in the mains, unfortunately. I did write down that the A main ran in about 6 minutes and 40 sec. I think we ended up with 7 cars in the B main and 8 in the A main.

If anyone has more details on the race results, please post them.

I am impressed at the support by the area latemodel racers. To have such a great turn out for a practice fun race...on the SAME weekend as a BRL event is super. ALthough the BRL event over shadows our local latemodel program.I felt it was in goodwill to ensure our calendars didn't conflict.

Again GREAT DAY...looking for a fun season.

pcdawg

Regarding the bodies. The rule is that all bodies must stay intact. I know the DIRT latemodels have a rather high cut line, which on paper may look like a aero advantage. I think the results from Saturday show that in the end the drivers make the difference. Those racers with stock car bodies, that were cut out; they simply need to tape up those back ends before racing formally for points.

Anything goes on a practice day, however,...just like Daytona!

Only six days until the season opener for the USR/C Latemodel Series. 100 lap mains, 66 lap heat races all with rolling starts. Brush VS. Brushless and DIRT latemodel cars VS NASCAR Stockcars. Last weeks practice confirmed a competitive "melting pot" of action is on tap for 2007.

Good luck to everyone at the Tri Clone next week!

Barry Maas won the season opening USR/C Latemodel 100 lap main event by .080 over second place Mark Kaye, Saturday December 2nd at the Tri-Clone Indoor Raceway - West Bend Wisconsin.

Maas also captured the overall Top Qualifier (TQ) honors during heat race competition. Although Maas completed a clean sweep, the main event was anything but a sleeper.

Three different drivers led the contest that took just 6:16.403 to complete. #5 Mark Kaye led the most laps with 56. #47 Chuck Manning turned the fastest lap of the race with a time of 3.402 around the bullring oval.

After choosing to "roll the dice" to determine the inversion, Mass started fourth among a stellar field of racers. Chuck Manning led the field to the green as he held the point for six circuits. Kaye took control on lap seven. Kaye looked to be "The Man" through the first two thirds of the race. Heavy traffic and a few bad breaks punted Kaye back to second. Kay never gave up as he mounted a pressure attack on Maas through the final laps.

Maas led the final 38 circuits to record his first main event victory in USR/C Latemodel competition. The final laps were wild as several challenges for position ended in thrills and spills while the leaders tried to complete the distance. There was a question as to which lap was the final with so much action taking place on the track. It appeared from the announcing that the event was still under green when infact the 100th circuit was completed.

Kaye inquired about the finish, as he passed Maas on the lap the announcers communicated was the final circuit. Scoring confirmed that Maas indeed led the official 100th circuit. Kaye was a true "class act" by accepting the decision and shaking Barry's hand on the drivers stand with a smile.

The win was the "closest" finish in USR/C Latemodel main event history.

Great effort by Mark to claw his way back after getting behind, and a great job by Barry to just barely stay ahead of Mark.

The bar has definitely been raised in Late Model class this year - lap times are about 3 to 4 tenths quicker, it seems. I'm not convinced that the Late Model Dirt bodies are the only reason, though. The guys that are running Brushless 13.5 class are running lap times in the 3.4 - 3.5 second range with NASCAR bodies, spoiler and no wing, so I think you can go fast whatever body you have.

Dave, is there any way you can post the final results of the A and B mains?

2005 National Driving Champion #11 George Mari returned to victory lane on Saturday December 17th; during the Tri-Clone 100 at the Tri-Clone Raceway, West Bend Wisconsin.

Mari led one of the most competitive fields of latemodel racers in the two year history of the series. "All Six" drivers won a heat race during earlier competition. The racing was clean, strategic and VERY entertaining to watch.

Mari led the opening five laps until #5 Mark Kaye wrestled away the top spot with a beautiful high side move. For the second race in a row, Kaye looked to be "the man" to beat. Bad luck would curse the Kaye Motorsport Ford Fusion again on lap eleven. While leading, Kaye was swept up in an altercation on the front stretch that left him on his lid for 10.57 seconds while corner marshals struggled to get to him.

While Kaye focused on getting back in the groove, #82 Mike Schultz took control of the point. Schultz opened up one of the largest leads of the day as he went on to lead the next nine circuits around the wicked fast Tri-Clone Bullring. In the mean time #47 Chuck Manning and Mari teamed up to work their way up to Schultz. By lap twenty six you could throw a blanket over the top three cars, as they ran almost identical lap times.

Manning pushed his DIRT latemodel Chevrolet out in front on lap twenty nine but Mari powered back on lap thirty two. Although Mari would lead the remainder of the event, the nose to tail battle between Mari and Manning was one for the ages.

George recorded the fastest lap with a 3.572 enroute to leading a race record eighty three laps and his first victory of the year. Chuck Manning was the Top Qualifier (TQ) for the event capturing a five point bonus for his efforts.

Just an exceptional day of racing. I am proud that the latemodel Series was the largest class at the Tri-Clone yesterday.

A special welcome to our newest latemodel members - Tanner Segar, Jeremy Kemnetz, Dan Kemnetz and Bob Kemnetz. We are proud to have you in the program. Kudos to Tanner for being the "Youngest" Main winner in USR/C Latemodel History at thirteen years of age. Also a shout out to Dan Kenmetz for making his first Main Event start in just his first try. It was a large field of competitors. Dan should feel proud to have captured a strong third place finish.

Welcome back to victory lane goes out to Mike Schultz. Mike has a very demanding job that takes him all across the country at a moments notice. We are always thrilled when the #82 BIG RIG rolls into the pit area. Mike whipped up on the locals in heat # 3.

You have all worked very hard and given your all to make this year a memorable one already for the USR/C Latemodel Series. "Thank you all" for your support and professional driving this season. Happy holidays to you and your families.
