View Full Version : W.O.O.R. has closed its doors
The Chad 10-02-2006, 03:49 PM Well guys this is by far the most challenging thing to do. I thought starting WOOR from ground up was hard, Nope its closing it down that proves to be the most challenging for me.
There will be no more racing out at WOOR.
I have a feeling that someone will step up and give you guys a good season next year somewere so dont run off and flood Ebay with buggy's....I am deeply sorry for the track closing but I have been thinking it for most of the season so now is the time to do it so someone else can get the ball rolling for you 1/8th scale guys.... I'm sure there will be alot of chatting on here but please make sure to keep it G rated..

Dave Walton 10-02-2006, 08:47 PM I just have 1 ?. Is there any chance that someone else could run the track.
CRSMP5 10-02-2006, 08:56 PM i drove there 2 times, 750miles round trip.. it is one of the BEST tracks/programs i have ever seen.. this is a SAD day for us all :(
TriPod 10-02-2006, 09:38 PM Wow that is a real shame. It was a great track and a very well put together and opgaanized. Met they best people up there in Mi at W.O.O.R. A very sad and shocking day for me as well. :(
teamductape 10-03-2006, 12:06 AM WOW I can't belive it. especially with everything you've put into the track over the years it is a great racing facility
wreckscuba 10-03-2006, 12:37 AM What the ??? This sucks :drunk: .I will miss woor. Thanks for the last 3years!!!!! it was fun.
BrentV 10-03-2006, 06:19 AM Well, like Chad said, don't throw in your hats yet.......I'm working on bringing a track to West Michigan (Holland/Zeeland) area. I'm in the process of looking indoor as well as were we could put an outdoor track. Biggest thing is the cost of an indoor, cheapest in town is right around $7000.00 month rent (43,500sq ft.). But my plan is to still have a track and keep the cost down (Race Fee Goal: $10.00). I'm also looking at the idea of an on site hobby shop, one that is like Dirt Burners. Full support of the racers. I'll keep on posting to keep you guys in the loop.

BrentV 10-03-2006, 06:35 AM Also to follow up on the indoor track. We will be running on dirt NOT carpet. A thought that I had was to have either a track the size of WOOR indoors or after talking to Nolan, a track slightly smaller and so the 1:10 scale guys will race it as well. Never the less I'm hoping to carry the WOOR legacy.

BrentV 10-03-2006, 06:39 AM To give all an idea of the size building that I'm looking at if WOOR was 200 x 120 sq ft. that equals to 24,000sq ft. then a 43,500sq ft building would have the track and big pit area as well as a well stocked hobby shop.
Keep in mind that I'm still looking, nothing is nailed down yet and probably won't be for a little while.

BrentV 10-03-2006, 06:46 AM I just have 1 ?. Is there any chance that someone else could run the track.
Dave, I've spoke to Chad and the track sits on land that his dad would like to sell, so if Nolan and I were to run the track it would more than likely be for a limited time.
Don/X1Truggy 10-03-2006, 06:55 AM $7000.00 a month? plus electric, insurance.....and heat in the winter! That's some big dollars. I will help ya out if you need me to Brent. I would love to see an indoor track to run in the winter. Keep us posted! You thinking of running at the Runn if they hold it on Saturday? If you are I'd pool with ya and split the gas and I'd even buy ya lunch! I also learned something...never drive a truggy under a Beamer! LOL It left a good mark on my .60 JConcept body LOL. What was I thinking :hat:

Roy Dallier 10-03-2006, 09:45 AM At 7000 a month you would need about 117 racers at 15 bucks a pop and that’s not going to happen around here . Brent why don’t you call the fair grounds in Hudsonville and see if you could run gas and electric in one of the barns. They have all the dirt you will need from the mx race
You might be able to swing about 50 racers a weekend if run both G/E. Just a thought.

That is a great Idea Roy! Kinda like Wasthenaw.. man I'd kill for a track like that closer than Ann Arbor.. You make an Indoor dirt track and run electric on it.. and you can count on me being there..
BrentV 10-03-2006, 12:00 PM Well, I'm thinking that the offset cost of a on-site full parts support hobby shop could cover the differance.
But like I said, it's all to be decided yet.
I agree that a track that can draw both G/E would be successful.
The Chad 10-03-2006, 02:59 PM Well guys I got the word from Al that Sat is the official date at the Run. racing starts at 11am sharp !!
Don/X1Truggy 10-03-2006, 07:25 PM Who's going to Pheasant Runn this Saturday? Car pool?

Dave Walton 10-03-2006, 09:52 PM [QUOTE=John Warner]You know what I find amusing?...... It's the fact that Chad choose to close the track and everybody is sad to see it, but has anybody asked what the deciding factor was for him to make that decision?[/QUOT
Low turn out and all the B#####ing that people are doing.I believe his parents are also in the process of selling that chunk of land.PM him and he will more than likely let you know what the final straw was that lead to the closing. It really is a huge lose.
Dave Walton 10-03-2006, 09:55 PM Brent check your PM box Thanks Dave.
Phat Dakota 10-03-2006, 10:55 PM I sure hope you guys aren't really thinking that $5k-$7K per month is an affordable rent for a track, especially one that will most likely be geared for nitro. You have to crunch the numbers and to charge only $10 per racer you'll need at least 125 - 175 racers each weekend plus whatever initial cost you'll have for trying to start your own hobby shop and employing someone to run it, plus electricity and heat. Most distributers won't even talk to you unless your willing to shell out 5 figures for an initial purchace and maintain that every month. So now your probably looking at about $20k per month or about 340 people per weekend at $15 a head if no one breaks any parts. Mike and Roy said it best by doing what the guys on the other side of the state are doing at Washtenaw. Find someplace cheap and take advantage of it. I'm sure Ann Arbor isn't the only place where there is a heated pole barn that isn't used by horses in the winter time. Email them, I'm sure they would be more than happy to tell you what they did to find the place they're at. You guys really need to be thinking in the $1k - $2k range and let Rider's and Hobby World worry about supplying parts for the racers, unless of course filing for chapter 11 is what your hoping for.
Dave Walton 10-03-2006, 11:13 PM Anyone going to take the road trip.
Well guys I got the word from Al that Sat is the official date at the Run. racing starts at 11am sharp !!

The Chad 10-04-2006, 08:05 AM Jason Swint you have a PM!!
BrentV 10-04-2006, 12:07 PM If this track can pulled off, what does it matter to you on what the cost is? So please keep your negitive posts in the PM's

Phat Dakota 10-04-2006, 12:28 PM I'd love nothing more than to see a nice indoor offroad track in this area. But there hasn't been any strong numbers in recent years to show that there are enough racers in this area to pull off $5k - $7k per month, that's what I was saying. If you took that as a negative remark then you misread it.
The Chad 10-04-2006, 12:41 PM Well maybe someone wants to start a new thread on here for (possible) new track in WM area?
Blueskid 10-04-2006, 01:39 PM One question I have for you Chad... Do you plan on being involved in R/C in anyway from here out? Like maybe race?!? I've always considered you a pretty good friend, and I'd hate to think you wont be around at all anymore .. :(
psycho02 10-04-2006, 01:40 PM If this track can pulled off, what does it matter to you on what the cost is? So please keep your negitive posts in the PM's
I did'nt read Andy's post as negative. I think his numbers seem right on the money, that will be an awful lot of money out of your own pocket to make it go.
The Chad 10-04-2006, 02:10 PM Well thanks for saying that mike... :) I'm going to switch from land base to air with the rc stuff.. (I want to try flying) but Yes I'm sure I'll be around from time to time....
Blueskid 10-04-2006, 02:40 PM I did'nt read Andy's post as negative. I think his numbers seem right on the money, that will be an awful lot of money out of your own pocket to make it go.
Same here, I thought Andy's post was a very realistic way to look at it.. he meerly stated the difculty of what was proposed.. Then gave an alternative, that would be much easier to acomplish.. I thought it was a very encoraging post..
I guess I'd just really like to see an Indoor dirt track in this area... I really dont care what I would have to pay for entry, nor what it would take for someone to do such a thing.. As long as it happens!
And if Brent has boocoo money stashed away that we dont know about, and would be willing to drop it into the cause of Drit R/C raceing in this area... MORE POWER TO HIM!!! YEAH!!!!
BrentV 10-04-2006, 02:57 PM Mike Howe you have a PM

erik z 10-04-2006, 06:04 PM Hi guys i can do a track for summer if you like 125x85 if you want it bigger i can clear some more trees. The track would be a blue groove hard pack clay track i found a place near me that will give me very nice red clay. I'm located 1 mile off 131 Greenville exit 10-15 min from downtown GR. There is a hobby store 5 min from my house 1 mile from food and gas station .So let me know if you would like a track otherwise i might just grow some grass.

Don/X1Truggy 10-05-2006, 05:37 AM About Brents post........
Brent is a diehard racer and will do what it takes to get something going for us if at all possible. Yes an indoor track would be just awesome here in West Michigan. Never have to worry about the weather conditions. Race year round! We talked the other day for quite some time and I'll tell you what.....Brent is one person who knows what he's doing. Let's just leave it at that. Ya the cost seems high but don't be suprised. I will support him all the way.
Don
BrentV 10-05-2006, 06:44 AM Thanks Don.
Also Don, what time are we leaving for Pheasant Runn?
Don/X1Truggy 10-05-2006, 06:53 AM Thanks Don.
Also Don, what time are we leaving for Pheasant Runn?
I'm meeting Champy at 6:30am at the Lowell exit 52 carpool parking lot. If ya want to meet there and follow/lead you know the time!
Don
BrentV 10-05-2006, 06:57 AM As far as negitive post maybe I stated it a little harsh. But as far as the track that I'm thinking about is more than just for club racing. I'm thinking large faciality that can host numerous events. I'm wanting to land something permanent. I had heard that Dirt Burners rent was in the $5000 range, and they had a supporting track that helped to offset the cost. My goal is to draw people from all over the state to race here. If you think about it, it takes more the just a track. I'm also looking at the possibility of buying a building outright and not dealing with the rent issue, and yes the building will be able to be like a multiplex. Right now I've got a quote for a building that is 150' x 250', which could house an 1:8 scale track as well as having a 1:10 scale track, and hobby shop.
So that is what I'm thinking and trying to get done.
motopro 10-05-2006, 07:28 AM brent all i caqn say is i wish you luck and hope and pray it happens...its just what the west side needs....you are correct about getting people from all over the state...
psycho02 10-05-2006, 09:25 AM more power to you Brent, If you pull it off and have an 1/8th as well as a 1/10 scale electric track, and have it here in west michigan I will be able to come out of retirement and race some dirt in the winter time. Im pulling for you.
The Chad 10-05-2006, 03:51 PM
Beerslave 10-05-2006, 07:01 PM sweet good luck brent, I hope it all works, if you need any help, let me know, i'll be glad...
it can be done, don't give up on the dream..
indoor tracks, store, online storefront, couple o adds in the magazines and you'll be rollin...
don't be afraid to look for investors either, that way your not out a lot if for some reason it doesnt work out? always nice to be on the safe side to...
erik z 10-05-2006, 08:26 PM ic you guys hey brent did you find a place yet im gettin twitchy i need to race. When you find a place maybe we can use my tractor to move dirt
BrentV 10-05-2006, 08:30 PM Erik,
I'm working on landing a BIG building right now, and I'm working with the "Zoning" comission to see what it takes to get the Nitro indoors (Touch-in-Go). I'm also working on a backup plan for an Outdoor if the Indoor doesn't get cleared by the Comission.
BrentV 10-05-2006, 08:35 PM Man, it kinda busy in here. Erik, you going to Pheasant Run? Yes Don I'll meet up with you guys on Sat. at the Lowell Carpool @ 6:30
