I wish someone would assemble a DVD recreation of those day-long "Kiddie Matinees" some of us remember from the 60s and 70s. They were a bizarre combination of badly dubbed German and Mexican fantasy films, "Our Gang" shorts, ancient cartoons, and maybe an episode or two from a "Flash Gordon" or "Batman" serial. They were really weird - and really memorable - and no doubt prepared some of us for a special appreciation of David Lynch. Below - Santa Claus Goes To Hell!

Ahh yess....those "Matinees" bring back memories.

For a buck...I could go see a great sci-fi film, cartoon, and a Buck Rogers/Radar men from the moon serial. Really got my money's worth back then......

Now aday.......it's buying a dvd for 20 bucks and fast forwarding thru the embedded commercials in the the DVD. I really hate paying for commercials.

No. But "Pee Wee's Playhouse" and "Twin Peaks" exist in the same alternate universe as does K. Gordon Murray's "Santa Claus".

I remember those well, in fact, some thirty years later the excreciable theme song from "The Christmas That Almost Wasn't" still pops into my head at random intervals!

Movie theaters really courted the kid's market back in those days, I remerber spending all day and most of the night at "Planet of the Apes-O-thons!" and "An Orgy of 007!" marathons.

But I'm with you, Scott, there ought to be a special place in Hell for anybody that made a dime off any of these, my personal list of the worst;

The Lemon Grove Kids Meet the Monsters-(when I saw it the ushers would come out at the end in monster mask, scaring the pants off nobody over the age of four)

Any Sun Classic movies about 'real life" mysteries like Bigfoot or UFO's.

Any Sun Classic movie about somebody lost in the wilderness.

The HR Puf'n'stuff Movie-(tho that might not have been so bad if you were puf'n'stuff before entering the theater)

I saw The Topo Gigio movie back in 66(?) and I even saw Santa Claus Conquers the Martians...Pee-YOO! Best afternoon was a tie between 3 Buggs cartoons, a Movietone News Short and Fantastic Voyage, and 5 Buggs cartoons and Disneys 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Ahhh, the smell of popcorn, the pelting with popcorn and the way your shoes sticked to the floor. I hate kids!

Back in the mid-1960s, my friends and I would catch the weekend matinee at a local theater — a double feature, a couple of cartoons, a short, a newsreel (yes , some of the studios still made them back then) — for a child's admission ticket of thirty-five cents! Of course, the pictures weren't exactly first-run — one memorable afternoon's fare was The Treasure of Pancho Villa and Beyond the Time Barrier. Actually, I was usually more interested in the bottom half of a double bill than the top half, as the "B" flick was frequently a sci-fi or monster epic!Don't forget these....
