View Full Version : midway rides
free spirit 09-14-2006, 02:52 PM this is an old model railroad that,s long gone, but it shows how a wife and kids take over l.o.l. i built the midway rides, my hubby put little motors in them and my son figured may as well add a slot car track .it was a freight yard with boring box cars that just sat and collected dust .

Neat! I wonder if one could automate the race track?
free spirit 09-15-2006, 10:04 AM this is a poor picture but you can see how the kids added all the hotwheels they had l.o.l. and there was allways a car flying off the slot car track ,but my hubby let them do their own thing .he figured how else can you learn unless you put something together yourself, learn a little about electrical circuits and scenery and in general just gave them the confidence to try anything . that was why i made the midway rides wanted to keep their interest .when things are moving trains are running and the cars on the slot car track were going ,little minds didnt get bored l.o.l.

At least four great toys there: trains, slot cars, the amusement park, and Hot Wheels!

free spirit 11-22-2006, 09:01 PM if you have any model railroad shows in your area , sometimes you can pick them up cheap i got a good deal on mine because i bought all he had. i think there was 8 different rides at that time . they are a little tricky to put together. i put glue in the wrong spots on the double ferris wheel and it wouldnt turn the way it was meant to but my husband got it apart and fixed it for me .i put a little glue on a toothpick because you only need a little dab in someplaces . its about the same as putting a model car together. thats the only thing i ever tried before i did these . getting the motors and playing around with different gear combinations was where i got stuck .but you can buy the proper motors for them . my husband likes to do it the hard way and find motors in his old junk collection and make them work l.o.l. but they all work and look kind of neat when you have 4 or five going at once . kids sure like them including this old kid l.o.l.
partyplatedave 11-24-2006, 10:54 PM they are very good looking but are they operational.....do they have working lights....do they move???
lordraptor1 11-25-2006, 02:00 AM is there a thunderbolt on that setup? i have been planning to do a carnival train setup but the only carnival stuff i have found that is even close to looking right is the faller stuff and it is of german carnival rides the only ones that look right (because of the bases so they can be motorized) from ihc are the ginny (caroseul, or merry-go-round to non carnival folk) and the thunderbolt. it is all about the detail. i have at one time had a few of the ihc kits but they were not built for running i hacked them up and built them to look like they were being slowed (pronounced ow like in ouch) aka teardown.

yes they move . no they dont have lights . we did use fibre optics with chase lights on one ride . to us they were just toys . they worked fine after a lot of playing around to get them right. which my husband did .one of his hobbys was toy robots and if they didnt work when he bought them they did a day or so later .but he goes from one hobby to another .loses interest in something once he gets it working and on to something else .right now hes back into a project car .

in the picture there were only 3 rides completed at that time we did have a thunderbolt . i still have them in storage plus we had a circus tent that had a moving trapeze it was scratch built .we had the circus train animals .concession stands .and lots of little people l.o.l.
faller has more detail but at that time we did this it was meant to be a toy and faller was expensive because i wasnt sure if i could build them l.o.l. but the carousel with the little horses that moved up and down and the little people on them was not bad detail for the price . for us it was all about the toy the detail was ok by the time you add a lot of people and fences and concession stands little minds never noticed and that was what it was meant for just a toy . my husband had his end of the model railroad where everything was on scale . brass engines . no tyco or bachman at that end of
town l.o.l. our part was for kids . everthing was meant for a kid to play with if it broke it didnt matter .
lordraptor1 11-25-2006, 06:22 PM i mainly take the ihc kits and bash them (when i am through the are on trailers or look like they are being set up or tore down, the swinger kit is the easiest to do, as it requires less cutting
free spirit 11-26-2006, 11:11 AM i used all the odd little parts that were leftover and made a load for a flat bed car .even the sprue they come on has some odd shapes sometimes and makes an interesting load . so the ihc are at least good for something cheap loads l.o.l.
partyplatedave 12-31-2006, 12:42 AM yes they move . no they dont have lights . we did use fibre optics with chase lights on one ride . to us they were just toys . they worked fine after a lot of playing around to get them right. which my husband did .one of his hobbys was toy robots and if they didnt work when he bought them they did a day or so later .but he goes from one hobby to another .loses interest in something once he gets it working and on to something else .right now hes back into a project car .
