scott law 08-23-2006, 10:17 PM Those were the days Brock and that race will be talked about for many years to come. Run the stock main at 6:00a.m. after being up 24 hours prior then by 7:00a.m. have a mod motor slugged in for practice and let her rip.

Sonny B 08-23-2006, 11:09 PM Yea Sonny! Man we are so lucky most these guys are still racing and in fact ol' Wayne Toomey just got an oval car and Sam Ware is too.
Cool, tell those two they better be at the Birds this winter. Please give them my e-mail next time you see them. sbrown15@insightbb.com
tw78911sc 08-23-2006, 11:17 PM Sure miss the large number of local racers. Most tracks pulled in more on a regular week than many of the Nats events do today. Hand counting sucked, but back then the only "Portable" computer weighed about 40lbs and was the size of a sewing machine w/o batteries. Times have changed but the spirit of things remains. Thx
Tom
RCThunder 08-23-2006, 11:20 PM Thanks everyone for your posts. As I can, all of you have as much passion for this hobby as I do.
swtour 08-24-2006, 12:42 AM Mike,
Way COOL video, and history...
Something I noticed and was kind of reminded of while watching it though was the issue of technology and speed.
Remember those early days (I started the summer of '85), cars were by todays standards really slow...but did we think they were SLOW then? Heck NO, they were the fastest things we'd ever driven.
Our Dirt Oval track started, and several of the guys had Hornets, Frogs and some Kyosho cars. Within a couple months, the standard became the RC10 in the 2wd class and the Yokomo 4wd car. Most ran buggy bodies when the track first opened...quickly switching to more realistic SPRINT car bodies for crowd appeal, and not much later almost EVERYONE at our track switched to the old MRP Camaro body.
Cars were pretty slow and easy to drive compared to todays standards (I already mentioned that) and we had HUGE numbers. The faster the cars got, the more SKILL it took to compete, the more MONEY it cost also..we started watching our numbers drop from a normal 70-80 racers a week to about 60. Cars picked up more speed...and a couple years later the Custom Works DOMINATOR came out...now things were REALLY fast...and we fell to about 35-40 racers.
It seemed the faster and more specialized the cars got...the more racers we lost.
Then PAN cars hit the scene about '89 or so out here...and that really split the crowd (What we had left...) Then MAN did it grow again... Until the old WIDE car got NARROWED up and became a SPECIALTY car too. Then stedily, the numbers dropped again...as speeds got faster and faster.
Most of the guys I know who have also been in this for more than 15 years have seen similar trends...but thanks to these DIE HARDS we keep going.
I too now have a 14 year old Son, who does MOST of the driving these days...I'm hoping to keep HIM in the hobby 20+ years too.
squeeker138 08-24-2006, 02:24 AM Rcthunder, I wish the gas prices were the same so that I could enjoy more tracks
RCThunder 08-24-2006, 08:17 AM swtour - I agree.... maybe we are going tooooo fast today. I wonder when the speed gets so fast our brains can't even keep up :p
Gary McAllister 08-24-2006, 04:48 PM Now that's the Mike Boylan I remember! The youngsters all grew up too fast. What an asset to RC racing Mike is!
Every once in a while I'll dig out old videos of the early days of Dirt Oval from SoCal or early Whipporrwill and Thundredrome for some "back in the day" memories. I'm sure Mike is in there somewhere.
Gary McAllister
SHAKY DAVE 08-24-2006, 05:22 PM Hey Gary. How about some copys or post those Thunderdrome & Whip videos. Can't wait to see Mikes, but your Thunderdrome fliks would be awesome.I was there for the 1st one,and everyone after that in Encino.Went to the Whip with Dan's sponsorship in '89.What i miss most was the big races. They we're allmost a treat back then. Now it seems like it's work.
wow. I can't believe the memories that brings back. Did we really have that many racers back then? Yeah we did. I remember a local dirt track in Jackson Mi got 60-70 racers on a TUESDAY night!
My first car was a Frog. It sucked. I can't beleive the changes that have taken place over the years. What can we do to draw all those people again???
hyperdriver 08-24-2006, 07:32 PM Take away all the things that are readily avaiable to kids now. Like xbox, internet, and the list can go on and on. I grew up in a town of about 4000, and it was not uncommon to get 35-40 people on a weeknight.
