I just got a scanner and it's up and working.
My plan is to take 1/24-1/25-scale decals, "reduce" them to 1/64-scale (water-slide, of course).
Anyone have an idea as to what DPI is recommended? Size? (i.e. 100% to 33%?) Any numbers would be appreciated, 'cause once I get the size desired, I can "lock" it into my system, and just print 'em out like an assembly line!
Thanks in advance!

I've been playing with homemade decals too... I use an old adobe Image Wave scanner with Photo Deluxe software.
With the photo deluxe you can choose 100, 150, 200 dpi (dots per inch) I thought the the highest resolution 200dpi would make the clearest detail, well it does but when you resize down to something close to 1/64th it does funny things to the lettering ???
A low resolution 100 dpi looks better when resized smaller, and 200 dpi looks better when resized bigger.
This may sound stupid but all I use is Microsoft Works, Import the picture and resize it on the page. Print a sample or two on plain paper until you get the size you like.
I'm no expert at computers... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night

I love the humor on this Board.

I scan at 600 Dpi. As for what percentage to shrink. I scan the top and side of the body I want decals for at 600 DPI. Then I shrink the decals to fit the body.

scan at somewhere between 150 and 200 dpi..then when you scale..(in Photoshop....which is a must)...(image/image size on the upper tab)...make sure that the 'resample image' box is UN-checked. (always un-check this when reducing. Check it on only when enlarging.)...by doing this you'll get the ideal resolution for you new mini decal...(assuming that the original scan was a good one..of course.)
I'm a graphic designer by trade and my most used softwares are Photoshop and Illustrator...so if anyone else has any more Q's  about this type of thing I'll help you in whatever way i can.

I tried to scan one at 600 dpi and my Adobe Image Wave won't scan that high so I played around with custom settings until learning that 300dpi is my limit! It took twenty minutes for the decals I scanned to be processed into the folder? You must have "Quite the Machine" to scan 600dpi !!!
But then I re-sized to 33% clicked print... and out came a set of nice fairly clear HO sized set of decals.I'm working with Adobe Easy Photo is this the same as Photo Shop ???
Now I think that the funny things that were happening to my re-sized decals were happening when I re-sized them in Microsoft Works?
Thanks!!!

How do you over come the transparency problem using clear decal paper? It seems the only color body these decals can be used on are white and yellow.

Well, I'd be interested in your decals when you get them rolling. rr
